  • of coz it changed a bit but serj still managed to control it...

even dio's great voice changed due to aging...

  • Voice change happens to every metal singers.

For example:Corey Taylor has different voices in every Slipknot record....

  • It would be boring if he didn't switch it up a bit. His voice has changed, maybe he stopped taking lessons.

  • I like this video, becouse here is my favorite song by song i few diffrent versions!! :))

  • Serj still sounds amazing, like in his solo albums! You can't expect him to sound the same in every song, maybe his voice was tired from those concerts!

  • Serj is an amazing singer, but he can't sing like he always did because he's trying to save he's voice, that's the matter i think

  • are you serious? the big day out recording that you criticized for serj's voice sounding like it was "going out" was incredible, he hit those high notes perfectly! best one in my opinion.

  • all that screaming would take a toll on your voice after years of doing it., plus, serj isn't a spring chicken anymore by any means, but he still rocks and has a beautiful voice.

  • Maybe he's voice changed, but his magic? I dont think so...

  • YES I AGREE. Thank you. I noticed the voice change in 2005 when i bought "Mezmorize", i was devastated. Serj as a live performer changed as well; just compare a live performance from say, 1997/1998/1999/2000/2001/2002 to a performance from the Mezmorize/Hyptnotize era in 2005-2006 and you'll notice he looks bored, too passive, just stands in one spot, and obviously sober as a nun, he just sucks now.

  • serj can't scream properly anymore..

  • its almost like hes struggling too keep his voice really deep in some parts just look at his face

  • lol daron looks like jesus

  • AT 1:6 IS THAT DRUMMER ATRANIK XATHCATOURIAN ?

  • @HellOfTheSeason nah just john with long hair

  • he became a sissy thats what happened

  • always system is awesome and i dont agree with you

  • whoa, I always though its been changing over the years, but after watching this it doesnt really sound all that different. Maybe I just associate his different looks with slightly different voice tones..

  • in this daron malakian is noe (in the bible) :D look at this

  • you have to take into acount the fact that each time he sings any song its at different times in the tour and set .... id like to see you sing perfectly with vocal power for 4 months none stop.

  • He has a very unique voice and I enjoy listening to him singing

  • Comment removed

  • this happens to all artists, like Gustavo Cerati (Soda Stereo & Cerati ) or Billie Joe Armstrong ( Green Day). it's normal, and yea, their voice change grom great to great to great :)

  • Your voice changes as you get older..... or do old people still have the same voice as when they were in there 30's? NO!

  • @jrpg0630 Idiocy is what you're saying! It is an old man of 80 years to squeeze out his voice. He has 44, is a young man yet. And obviously going to have the same tone of voice all his life, unless something is sick! The voice may become shaky in the 3rd age but always kept the same tone, does not change ...

  • @androide675 u may have the same tone, but not the samee energy and stamina.... and I hate to say this as a huge fan of them

  • @jrpg0630 Perhaps you can not have energy at 44?

  • @androide675 depends in each person...

  • Now if Daron could sing in key or STFU

  • i am honestly a huge ass SOAD fan but his voice these days are no longer made for metal music not even rock and roll.

  • i dont think it sounds that different, except after the first one he's hitting more of the right notes (second performance was best - and i was there!!!)

  • 2005 Serj Voice is METAL Pure

  • 2005 is the best

  • He's also 44 years old, give him a break...his voice is amazing regardless...just guess he doesn't have the same energy as he did 10 years ago...

  • @TheHartooni It is not the same song in a recording studio, the voice does not change in 10 years unless you have a problem with the vocal cords in that span. Toxicity recorded in 2001 when he recorded his voice in a studio, not live to hear the same thing...

  • No, hes right, Serj's voice is changed. All concert of the 2011 Serj's voice has changed, i have to say that.

  • @vegeta1885 Indeed, there still good I personally don't like the new voice :( but SOAD will always be SOAD and I'll always love SOAD

  • Serj hace la voz que quiere cuando quiere, simplementehay algo que se llama "CUIDAR" su voz, eso es todo, quizá su voz no es tan ronca, pero aún es genialisimo.

  • the 1998 and 2001 serj voice was the best !

  • He has AMAZING voice ;]]]

  • 2:05 was fucking epic. and the 2005 serj was the best

  • i agree he must take care of his voice but damn now its their last tour in 2011 he should scream just for the last time!

  • @FrozenSparky

where did you get that from? they're doin their first tour in 5 years. never read anything about that this tour is their last!

  • it means he's more experienced at singing. i think he got better. whatever you think, it's still serj, and serj will always rock hard!

  • You cant scream and shout for hours every night while on tour, it's physically impossible, either he screams and can never sing again around age 40, or he sings and can do it until the day he dies. What would YOU do??

  • Comment removed

  • it sounds like his voic changes with his personality like when he hase his hair short and a full buird he sounds load and when his hairs long and he hase his go-t he sound more screamy hahaha

  • Comment removed

  • its also different because of other tuning. From C to C#

  • Yeah, Serj could do his stuff A LOT more aggressive, but then guess what? he'll blow the rest of his voice out. We have to accept the fact that these guys after a certain time won't be able to do what they could in their late 20s/early 30s, especially Serj who merges harmony with screaming and roaring, could he have taken care of his voice better? Yeah, maybe, but there's nothing you can do. Tool's frontman has the same problem and admitted how hard it is to do earlier songs. Check out SuitePee

  • The last performence was in 2002 i think

  • Daron looks like fuckin jesus christ here :D

  • Yeah his voice was awesome...but he has gotten older so he get's tired easier, he doesn't have as much energy as he used to!!!!

  • whis talking this shit

james hetfields voice changed...but not serj's

  • Serj's voice is very good, he sings slightly diferent because is voice is starting to get "tired" and so? SOAD is pure epicness and no one can make it stop!

  • didn´t change, wtf, stop smoking crap!!!!

  • @awtork i agree

  • Damn. System Of A Down was hairy as fuck in 2003! lol

  • try singing / yelling for all those years (15yrs give or take) on all those long tours. He has to change it up. It has changed but still love the variety. Love all this ranges thats whats so great about him. His preference probably changed too.

  • serj has the voice of a god is ee no change maybe hes tired over time i saw them a month ago in concert and trust me his voice is at 100%

  • His voice hasn't changed, its just every time he sings depending of what songs hes sang his voice will sure change a bit, for example if he'd sang psycho before chop suey his voice will come up a bit off tune because there are screams in psycho but as i said doesn't mean it changes for ever.

And anyway some times his voice comes up very good :)

  • Everyone that has problems with Serj's voice is not a System fan and has just no idea. Just sayin'

  • i would say every version of this song sounds very very good lol, its the songs that reallyyy need growls and such that suck ahahha

  • i would say close to 2:10 sounds pre fukin great, even tho it changed lol

  • No, man. the music is only with the volume higher or lower ...

  • bdo 2002: 7

    osburne 2003: 8

    bdi 2005: 7,5

    mtv: 9

  • at 3:03 i love the look serj give daron

  • I WANT THE OLD SERJ !!!

  • I'm sorry to disagree, mate, but you probably don't know much about music. They are playing it some semitone/tone higher now (for no reason, as I prefer the original one), and he can sing it all the same! His voice is not going out, he is just adapting it to the new tonality!

  • @Razorsouls actually, if you'll notice. though not necessarily in chop suey particularly, over time serj's voice has gotten less agressive if you pay attention to his current live performances he doesn't yell at the parts he used to yell in. But of course he has aged since he first started the band

  • @Razorsouls

actually, on recent 2011 perfomances, they changed the guitar tuning again to the one during the toxicity era. and he's voice is still not agressive.

  • fuck you

  • This Happens To alot of Singers Like JONATHAN DAVIS from Korn

  • It is common knowledge that Serj has a voice of a God, So obviously you are trolling,

  • 2:03 The best

Serj is the best singer in the world!

    Peace.

  • i kinda think that his new voice doesnt sound so powerfull and its not so natural these days. but i allso think that his new voice sounds pretty good in his solo albums and i think that thats what artists should do. but now that soad is back, i would like if he would sing little bit more like he singed in 2002 or maybe they could tune the guitars back to drop c

  • amo system....pero cantan como las wea en vivo xDD....aun asi soad forever!!

  • i cry when i listen to chop suey it contains so much emotion its incredible.

  • i think he seems to have a hard time with the getting the higher notes. he still sounds real close, to me. but he just sounds.....strained a bit i think. at the end, i noticed he turned around and then back to the audience. sounded like he hit an off key lol. i think he oops'd. hes still the voice master!

  • It's not that it changed, it's just that he is talented enough to change his vocals as he grows. Plus, after doing symphonic and solo albums, I'm sure he would change his style.

  • Like Korn SOAD said, they're playing the song a half a step up from what they used to, so naturally he's singing a half step up. Also, he lost a lot of weight which will make anyone sound a little more girlish.

  • 2:46 When he say "Trust" fuckin beautiful

  • this might sound stupid but its his weight honestly he was bigger then and skinny now

  • Serj's voice: Great to Great to Great to Great to Great

  • @Mpyroblast YOure right bro !

  • @Mpyroblast also serj daron and john all look really weird with long hair lol

  • @Mpyroblast Epic to Great to Awesome to Trying to be good to shit. Serj is best person in the world but his voice is gone, FUCK...

  • @Peukka7 His voice isn't gone, it may have changed in tone over the years but think about it, it's really not accurate going off of live tracks because they've most likely been going at it for a while in the show so he's most likely winded from moving around on stage.

  • That's cause in 2005 - 2006 they tuned their guitars up a half step, so he's singing higher than he used to during the toxicity/STA era.

  • there are 3 resons that i can tell 1.hair 2.facial hair 3. and he dosent have sun glasses anymore

  • dont question The Serj. he knows whats best, as he is magic!

  • it's true that serj's voice changed in 2005 and 2006 and it's because he lost weight and smoking! but listen now to empty walls and gate 21 he's getting better and better specially that he quit smoking and started eating fish, so don't worry serj is serj and he is usually the best! and finally yes Serj with moustache and short hair is better and stronger!

  • i don't hear it

  • Stupid people... It's just the time he sings... When you sing so long colour of the voice is changing... it means that the voice is tired... Idiots -,-

  • @Loandzia

    I agree with you

  • @Loandzia u know i agree, plus most performances sound slightly different this is just a stupid false accusation made by an ignorant person

  • its probably the weight he lost and when he quit smoking

  • It sounds as if he's got a nasal problem wen the voice changes

  • its weird but they are awsome either way

  • why do angels deserve to die?

  • @tdubbcdman ya same here.. but im just gonna eait it out cuz i have a feeling that this will last a while!

  • The last video, what year was that in? :o

  • @PureFillan 2002 MTV Latin Music Awards

  • I am sick of these comments that Serj`s voice changed. That`s just dumbshit. Thanks.

  • Here the facts :

1.) I can`t hear any differencs the first and the second version

2.) The 3rd part (beginning at 1:46) is from 2005, that was the time when Mez (and Hyp) came out, and since then Daron change his guitar tuning from Drop C to Drop D#, what is half step higher than Daron and Shavo normally play. Serj`s voice didn`t change, he just sang a bit higher because the higher guitar and bass tuning.

3.) that was in 2002, so why should that be a change compared to the first ones?

  • @MrRAMMSTEINER95 3rd: Drop C#

  • @MrRAMMSTEINER95

    2) You're stupid. Singing a half tone higher doesn't change your voice timbre, not if your span is higher than a minor third.

They sing sloppy in all examples btw.

  • @twooffour of course it changes the way it sounds, you probably don't understand me. I'm really sick of people that insult me before they think.

And the examples are good, don't say shit.

  • @MrRAMMSTEINER95

Oh, it does? Let's see: You got an original in c major, and gotta transpose it to Db major, ONE HALFTONE HIGHER.

The first four notes of the C major scale are: C, D, E, F.

The first four notes of the Db minor scale: Db, Eb, F, Gb.

So tell me how the F is supposed to change in sound when it's THE SAME FUCKING NOTE.

The only thing that's gonna sound somehow inherently "different", will be the the highest note of the song - because it hadn't been used in the prior transp..

  • @twooffour

Yeah, and because one halftone higher, he voice gets one halftone higher, too. So sure that the voice sounds different than the other one.

And if the tuning is higher than the normal one, then it changes, its not the same not lol.

  • @MrRAMMSTEINER95

    Wow, you're a dense one.

Basically, higher tuning on an instrument, DOES result in timbre change even if the same notes are heard. But vocals, are NOT tuned, you just SING DIFFERENT NOTES.

So singing an F in a C major song, is the same as singing an F in a Db major song. IT SOUNDS THE SAME.

If the ambitus of a song encompasses, say, all notes from C to e', then the ambitus of the transposed version will encompass all notes from Db to f'.

  • @MrRAMMSTEINER95

Basically, aside from the low C, and the high f', the pool of notes sung is IDENTICAL, and thus SOUNDS EXACTLY THE SAME.

It's the same fucking Db-e', GET IT?!

  • @twooffour

Dude, you don`t understand me. If Serj sings higher, and even if it's just a little bit, then it sounds kinda different, GET THAT?!

  • @MrRAMMSTEINER95

Only in case of the particular transposed notes, not overall voice. And the point (and fact) is that his voice has changed, because he sings THE SAME NOTES with a different timbre.

  • @twooffour

His voice didn't change, he's still the same voice like in early times, he just can change it more now. Have you ever listened to his solo project? If so, then you should have realized that in many of his songs his voice sounds same like in System.

Anyway, he's got a kickass voice and I like it.

  • @MrRAMMSTEINER95

Whether intentional or not, if you compare his voice between the Toxicity era and Mezmerize (both on albums and on stage), you'll notice that his "tenor mode" sounds noticeably different - before, it was thin and clear, later it became thick and creamy.

It remained so through the Elect the Dead album, as far as I can think - I haven't listened to his newer stuff yet.

Now he did use his "new" voice in the early demo Friik, Thetawaves featured it in the chorus, and I think...

  • @MrRAMMSTEINER95

... there was a hint of his old tenor in Holy Mountains or something, but overall the voices were pretty consistently distinct.

At any rate, no idea what's behind that, but it certainly ain't the tuning.

  • @twooffour Hol Mountains is a SoaD song ;)

But I mean the Solo songs, for example you should listen to Gate 21 (Rock version or not, doesn`t matter).

Well, maybe he wanted to try something new out^^

  • @MrRAMMSTEINER95

Will do, but just in case you missed it, this video compares SoaD to SoaD (fyi, both Thetawaves and Friik are SoaD, too), and so did I.

  • @twooffour good, good. Yeah, I know that, but I said this because you said his voice changed somehow. And that's why I said he probably wanted to try something new out, and that you can hear his "old voice" at his solo project. ;) And I know that these songs are from SoaD.^^

  • @MrRAMMSTEINER95

Hm, just listened to Gate 21 - he sings in the Mez/Hyp voice there :D

  • @twooffour Well, it`s more a mix of Mez/Hyp and Toxicity, exspecially the calm beginning voice.^^

just look for other serj songs, they`re all great! ;)

  • Why should I care? His voice is still times better than most people will ever have.

  • Uhhh listen to Elect the Dead, ELD Symphony, Imperfect Harmonies? It's gotten better

  • In their last albums (merzmerize/hypnotize) they changed the tuning of their instrument from a drop C to a drop C#, so when they played old songs live Serj had to sing higher notes, specialy on Chop Suey.

He still is the best though !

  • @kmaaaaGaming true dat

  • Since when is he a smoker?

  • 1.13 Jesus

  • mmm I agree, he changes his voice but I think that he sings so much better, I saw his concert elect the death and he sings amazing, in my opinion soad will be the bets in 2011 when they return, sorry Im mexican and my English is not good. System of a Down son los mejores.

  • How come shavo never changes bass??

  • Idk if you've heard his new stuff... But I think he sounds better than ever! =D

  • lol wtf man? if you like his voice better in some album then just listen to it! what a bitching shit that is? OF COURSE peoples' voice changes during the years, either because of simply age, from smoking, continuous singing as well... I'm a singer, and i can't sing the way i did back when i was 18, i listen to myself and i say "how the fuck did i do that?!?" but as the years passed, i can't.

Consider the life of these people, before blaming them for "ruining their voices" etc.

  • bad ass voice?and you say that you have nothing against him?in first place the sound its not the same in all videos, and second an artist can modulate his voice just to adjust to feelins he has at each moment.

  • The last two are the best hands down.

  • Look he has an awesome voice i mean to be able to scream and sing like he does is effing amazing i would kill for that kind of skill

  • Yeaaaaaaaaa there reuniting

  • so yeah. i found this out im sure the same time as everyone else, but SOAD is playing a reunion tour, but in Europe :/ and they don't have any plans other than to play. I'm hoping for an album though!

  • darron you look like a hobo with a beard...BUT WE STILL LOVE YA!

  • maybe he's tired of singing so many time when they tour they go to A LOT of places in a short amount of time maybe he just tired

  • I agree with you. Maybe it's because of drugs , and he 's losted weight I think.

Another reason is music tune, they used to compose in C until Toxicity album, but Mesmerize and Hyptnotise are in C# so serj sing higher ;)

  • i like both voices

  • i'm so glad they are reuniting but all the dates are in overseas! come play another US tour SOAD plz!

  • @tdubbcdman they are! Just on the west coast and canada though.....

  • @jonnyboy741 i know! why can't they come to texas! i'd go see them out west if my broke ass could afford to travel

  • i jizzed so much i had to find a bucket

  • Hey man... try to sing-along 2 hrs of SOAD and then, maybe then, you'll realize how nonsense is your video... (i agree serj took some «shortcuts» on his performances thru-out the years, but no one shits the same shit twice)

  • serj vocals are very good !!! hehehe

  • What the hell are you talking about? He sounds fucking brilliant..On the video described as "It looks like his voice is going out" he actually sounds the best..

  • YES I AGREE!!!

  • i think serj can't sing anymore metal and rock..-.-sorry bad english..

  • Serj's voice sounds different not only because of the time difference with these clips, but keep in mind that after Hypnotize/Mezmerize (perhaps even earlier) Daron and Shavo started tuning their guitars a half step higher, so naturally Serj is singing highe than his normal range.

  • is because hes geting older

  • Daron looks like jesus lol 1:05 LMFAO!

  • @mp4ever31 What are you talking about? Daron IS Jesus!

  • great exemple is the song Deer Dance

just listen this song over the years

  • I really think smoking affected. There are many who keep their voices for years. If u see other 2005 shows his voice is still different. And it's not a matter of awesomenes like evryone's saying. They were ALWAYS awesome. But i really think he should had conserved his voice. Look for PLUCK live 2005, and see what i mean. The beggining is like "AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH" rather than " Rrraaaaaaaarrrrrrghh". But SOAD is still nº 1 band and always will be. AND THEY'RE FUCKING BACK!

  • You do realize that they played all the C stuff in D on the mezmerize/hypnotize era. So thats why his voice sounds so much different there. Had to sing higher...

  • interesting insight and good video compilation! great work!

would have been great if you added the years.

hm, his voice changed, but from really good to really good, from Serj back then and Serj today. always grand.

when did he start smoking anyway? and does he still smoke?

  • @GreatFlamingPoop,

You're right. Since Mesmerize and Hypnotize they've had a higher sounding tone. And I play bass: most of their "System of a Down" and "Steal this album" are tuned C-G-C-F which is much lower.

  • trueeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • I agree that is voice has a more "nasally" sound to it nowadays. But I read somewhere he took a guitar to the face and had to get reconstructive surgery on his nose. I like his old voice better, he could really belt it; now he always switches to falsetto for the heavier parts.

  • @Joshualbatross YOU'RE RIGHT !

  • daron looked like paul mccartney in the second video.

  • No actually, in later soad the guitar was tuned differently so his voice was raised

  • Had? He HAS a bad ass voice. This song is very hard to sing and he still manages to hit the right notes, so is not that his voice has gotten worse. Maybe he was tired, or something.

  • 2:38 call a docter darons having a seizure!!!
