@dancello there are different sizes and weights of tai chi balls, some are made of stone, wood, or metal, I think that a bowling ball could used as a tai chi ball, it really depends on what you want to do with it. some like it heavy metal ones for jing training, while others prefer light wooden ones for chi training.
Also, Grandmaster Fu Zhen-Song used to practice these types of movments with a solid stone ball! Including Ball dropping/catching techniques into the body,...(kids' don't try this at home!)
the placing and re-placing hand movement is due to this ball's weight,(26 to 30lbs!),...look under 'Mark Lee Pringle' for a different type of 'Ball kung-fu'. It is a continuous method like Ba-Gua that doesn't spider-walk the fingers or re-place the hand position. It is just a different method with a plastic ball.
That ball looks heavy! I bet ball training will make you way powerful! why does he keep shuffling his hands after each movement? I understood the emphasis to be upon smoothness and continuity, am I perhaps wrong about this?
I have studied under Master Chen and the ball weight is 26 lbs. He showed us his dantien power and it is immense, this exercise is very focused on storing up chi over time and developing the dantien.
Very good for building strength and western bowling technique!!

Looks like a good way to train the movements necessary for taiji.

it's for bloodflow, qi flow, etc. joints get fucked up if you do it for too many reps in one try, so it's best not to overdo it.
