This is absolutely amazing sir. The sound quality is near perfect. That is such an awesome creation, tool, everything. By any chance, are you making any to sell? The individual cd's, not the machine. I would be super interested in paying you to make some for me. Please message me if you are interested in doing this. Thank you.
Hai provveduto a fare l'equalizzazione Riaa inversa?
Very good idea:) At home we have a lot of unnecessary boards that we use as the vinyl. I also have something to try. And before on this album is gonna be it paint the black to have a climate. I will choose a good speaker and record. PhotoStream only need to have good mounting plate. I try to record the beginning of their votes in such a disc and play. But it will be fun.
This is just incredable. You are a genius! You know what you could do. Make a CD/45. Get 1 short song , burn it on your computer, then cut the exact same song with your lathe on the unused section of the disc. That way you can have a record AND CD that could play in either player!
I'm amazed there's such a perfect correspondence between the drive of the speakers and what's needed to impress the the cd, that's properly clever, you hould use this for your masers mech engineering thesis
Ottimo lavoro, davvero interessante come progetto.
thats amazing i always wanted to build a record cutter and i always thought that cd would make the best blanks because of the sof plastic, but why would you use a cheap toy record player for playback????
@hifijohn DUDE THATS NO TOY! its a vestax mobile vinyl hunting machine used world wide by djs hunting out vinyl in those secret shady record stores. cos its mobile like:)
C O N G R A T S U L A T I O N S man! I want to build one since years along too except with larger "lacquer" than CD's as medium! For the moment, I gather the better informations available as possible to build a near pro model! You're a genius!

@mbarry6 actually, I take that back. from what I just achieved today, yours only sounds a little better. I still have a ways to go as far as fitting a lot on one cd tho. yours is truly amazing. mines still smaller ;D lolz who knows maybe someday ill be your competition! make the engraver smaller, remove cracks, balance the treble, bass, and mid tones and you'll have it up to standards with production quality records. better get to it before I do ;D
Absolutely fantastic work and research! My uncle used to say this sort of recording process was not ever possible. Very well done indeed :)
Just out of interest, how did you construct the worm gearing to allow enough space in between the grooves on the record and how was this synchronised to the turntable speed?
Would love to experiment in making something like this myself :)
@djfmitv Thanks! The arm and the platter are independent. The arm is driven by a cc motor and I can set the speed with a potentiometer. For groove spacing: I started with an high speed of the arm and then I decreased the speed... you can see when grooves begin to "go into collision" watching them changing appearance and also because when the new groove is too close to the previous one you sometimes can hear something like an hissing sound (the sound of plastic being cut twice!).
@Seringson - That's a good method, thanks Seringson :) BTW, since it was mentioned by some of your subscribers about the last song - I really like the tune. Would it be possible to send an MP3 link of your song? Cheers and keep up the good work :)

i might try that some day after all i have all things thats needed, a good workshop, a local tool shop, a good knowledge aboute records and a perfect record player for this a realy old hmw record player from the 50s that can play 33s 45s 78s and even 16s and it have a pizo cartridge with both a 78 stylus and a lp one and it have a high tracing force.

Hi,as usual strange behaviour of YouTube,I replied a few days ago but my answer disappeared!Well:try with a syringe needle, slightly tilted,so that plastic matter is not really engraved but"deformed".The needle should push sideways the plastic to produce the groove.Noise could arise from irregular etching.I didn't prepare the needle.About equalization:try with bass to minimum and higher frq to the max then adjust them when you get the first good result with the groove shape. Un saluto!
Hey well done man, amazing job. I'm actually going to try to build something like that (but really simplified lol) for a school project but I'm afraid that when I play the record on my turntable to see the results my needle might get damaged. Do you think I should buy a new cartridge or do you think it's safe?
Well, I think it'd be better to use a cheap cartridge for making tests and playing cut CDs: the groove resulting from a "DIY" cutter is different from the one of a "real" record so the stylus may jump or wear out very quickly. My advice is to use a cheap "disco" cartridge whose tracking force is very high (>4 grams) and the lateral stiffness is very high. The heavy and stiff piezo pickup of the vestax turntable I show in the movie (or numark, it's the same) is ok for playing "home made records"!
Yes, of course! Pls let me know how can I send you an mp3. Now I'm travelling for work, I've got my laptop with me but I'm afraid that I don't have the audio files in the hard disk. I'll send it to you as soon as I go back home!
Thanks to all! Your comments are very kind. Pls note: I uploaded a new video that shows cutting head disassembling. I hope it could be better than explaining by text.

Grazie a tutti!
unmeasurable inteligence. I would be very gratefull if another video will be uploaded by you showin how the cutting head was made. But i guess it`s too much for you to explain. but if you can, well and good. Looking forward to know this things even better. Thank you so much.

What you are doing wrong is playing the master.
A record is normally recorded as a soft and unplayable master that is easy to cut.
This is used to make a stamper.
Molten vinyl is poured into a mold and the stamper stamps out the record.
The vinyl cools, and yields the record(s).
The vinyl is far harder than the master but contains all of the information that the softer material was able to capture.

Thanks to all! Your comments are very kind. Pls note: I uploaded a new video that shows cutting head disassembling. I hope it could be better than explaining by text.

Grazie a tutti!

what kind of needle are you using as a cutter?

A syringe needle, slightly "tilted" in comparison to groove direction.

Grazie!!

How many "CDs" can you make before you have to change cutting head?
Could you make a line recording from the player so it's easier to hear the sound quality?
Wohoo I'm impressed !!!
ildur 2 years ago
More or less 15. Yes, I will make a line recorder (the problem is that my camera isn't provided with audio in :( )
