How right you are, Matt Monro was under promoted for he sings better than Frank Sinatra. Had he lived long enough his music would have conquered the whole world. I keep on listening to his songs and my heart is immensely captured by this gentleman. I just love him.

    Mutiti

  • a man of high calibre

  • superb, top ten of all time, pure class

  • my mother love's him so much ....i remember my childhood when i play n listen to this song....love it

  • George Martin, Mat's world renowned producer wrote- Mat Monro was the finest singer of ballads that he ever had the good fortune to produce.Mat had the rare gift of getting to the heart of the lyric and with his supurb voice, delivering it in such a way that it became a personal message to his audience.

Mat will sing on, and I shall always hear him. (From an EMI record cover ''Mat Will Sing Forever

  • my first contest piece was BORN FREE! i was in my 6th grade then. :)

  • he is the man.

  • . . . my connection with Matt ??. . . . I'm proud to have served in the same Regiment as Matt, though a decade apart !!

  • My fav song in 1964...Thnks 4 uploading..

  • Beautiful voice. Thanks for uploading.

  • we should have met some years ago

  • I now realise, at the grand old age of 58...just what my mum & dad loved about this man! His voice is superb! And as a couple who remained in love until my my dad died in 1975, the words must have really got to them! How lucky they were!!!

  • @annemargaret78 Yes, so wonderfully put.......life comes by just once and to find a truelove for life as your parents did, is priceless. This song is for all those who missed out.

  • I lost my dad 5 years ago and my unce talk about fav songs they both sung this song and its soooooooo true xxxxx

  • nah frank sinatra was the matt monro of america

  • A classic from one of the 'greatest'.

  • very sad

  • What a wonderful singer! Will always be remembered. Thanks for sharing it!

  • matt monroe my favorite old time music , lovely song

  • Mattt Monro never got the credit he deserved. He came from a generation of great singers, and he was among the very best.

  • h ewas well promoted, very famous especially in the USa, sang on a Bond film [from russia with love] and George Martin arranged for him, with Don Black working with him so well known, well respected!

  • I have this single, its 1964 parlophone, R5171 in case anyone wants to chase it up.

  • @edwina22 Cheers edwina, been looking for that info. Thanx very much.

  • MAGIC

  • My Grandpa Interviewed him on his show, in the Cebu, Philippines.

  • Matt was and still is the best singer the UK has ever had.He was wonderful ,and is sadly missed.I am reading his biography at the moment ,by his daughter ,and it is so sad ,a life cut short by his addiction ,which I didn't know about. This song makes me cry.

  • Beautiful singer. BUT one should not forget that the composer and first performer was the Austrian UDO JÜRGENS (Juergens) who sung this song in 1964 at the European Song Contest - and reached the 5th place. Later in 1966 he won the Contest with Merci, Cherie ...

The real genious is always the composer!

  • @musicspotAT Matt asked Don Black to write lyrics in english to Udo Juergens's song because he liked it so much. The rest is history. Matt's life has recently been published in a book written by his daughter Michele. Sadly Matt's second wife passed away in 2010 but his name will live on for ever in his music

  • In a word ......Perfection.

  • @jaddison1112

    I totally agree...

  • He makes me wish I could turn the clock back. This was a live performance in Australia in the 60's. May you rest in peace Mr Monro!

  • yes , i say the same , he was great, i was born to listen to this wonderlful music, may i i suggest brook benton, , he fab fab. xtx you all .

  • Mat was a big star in his time overshadowed by rock & roll - a truly wonderful singer

  • he is amazing! my dad use to be a body guard for him when he sang at wimbledon pally, amazing voice!

  • muy bueno, gran voz, gran vigencia a pesar de ser de la década de los 70

  • What a great voice.....I honestly cannot think of one better....definately missed..thankfully we still have his music..

    Michele Drinkwater

  • A truely wonderful talented singer who is sadley missed, i love your music as much as ever Matt here is too the next fifty years.

  • The most polish singer of the 60's...Mlk

  • marvellous - such a wonderful word

  • There is nothing to say....Simply listen. You clearly appreciate the great talent he was. That,s why you,re here. That,s why we all select this.

I only hope he is somewhere special...And realises, how much we love, and appreciate his talent.

Matt...I wish the rest of them realised . Rest in peace....You truly touch me.

  • wonderful

  • This man must be the most underrated of all the swing singers. Matt was a legend and more than a match for anyone. truly great talent which was lost far to soon.

  • The music and voice so magnificent and powerful..you can feel the ambience. I like so much yet such an immortal song..,...fr Phil is

  • macvatu you are a shameless name-dropper, but I can't blame you!! This man was such a sensitive artist, and with great phrasing and breath control. England be proud of this man, who was as great in his way as Janet Baker or Noel Coward.

  • ..yes, I like good ol' ma'hie !! I happened to serve in the same regiment as he did. What's more, I was also stationed in the camp where englebert humperdink served his National Service. ..so, there !!

  • This man is a true legend.....a supremely talented singer , without doubt Britain's finest. Almost certainly under promoted by the faceless musical institutions of the sixties who were mainly focused on the money-making rock bands of the era. Matt Monroe's dulcet tones were more than a match for Frank Sinatra and his other American contemporaries but the British Music Moguls of his era failed to promote Matt to the heights that his fabulous talent so richly deserved.

  • @RamWhamBam Was it '64 or '65, one can always hear Matt Monro's song on the radio. I mean in my village in th Philippines. Johnny de Leon would always play his hit record between 5:00 to 6:30PM.

  • @RamWhamBam yes, and then he died...... regretably

  • @RamWhamBam yes, and then he died....... regretably

  • Britain's greatest singer who we lost much too soon

  • @MrDoncos well said sir.

  • r.i.p tc saddly missed

  • I am a 60 year old male and this song has caused me to shed a tear!!

  • @kitkatsist i'm 52 yr. old woman....like you..i'm getting emotional everytime i hear this song.

  • @4comandancia hi you were very young when this was a hit I am intrigued as to how this can effect you in this way? Did your parents play it??

  • @4comandancia : Matt's rendition of Softy is beautifully done and may have a

similar effect. Sinatra called him the best vocalist England ever produced.

    Truly extraordinary.

  • @4comandancia where are you now

  • Respond to this video... where are you now

  • I bet really old people couldn't tell the difference between a chart of thirty even forty years ago and a chart of now. For heavens sake there was good and bad then and good and bad now. In the X factor tonight Mary has stage presence and a big voice, and Cher and Katy have style, charisma and good voices.

  • This is such a sad song, beautifully sung, but I would never fall into the trap that always happens, of saying that music and singers were wonderful then and rubbish now. It simply not true. Probably Victorians said it about the 1920's. I'm not a teenager, not even in my forties anymore but I'm still quite young and there talented artists around now.

. When I was seventeen it was the Sex Pistols, The Clash, Jam, Ian Drury etc.. I remember older people slagging them off but that was 35 yrs ago

  • @jmldm2 they slagged them off rightly so ,how can you compare the shit pistols to singers@

  • the phrasing of sinatra, more warmth than nat king cole the perfect combination. wish we could still have this kind of song in the charts instead of these talentetless, greedy, fame hungry wasters! i blame the x factor and all the rest of the "reality tv" crap.

  • bring all the lovely songs back

how privileged to have been born at the time that great music was produced

as far as romantic is concerned

When men where men & women women

    oh yea

Sin ninguna duda ...la verite.....bien sur......buona fortuna amici

    Arrivederci

  • Keefy1756. On the nail there man. So true.

  • the good lord deemed this wonderful mans voice should be heard above in his kingdom, though the lord was kind enough to loan him out to us but for a few years, he took him back into his fold. matt sadly missed by all.

  • @lennydooch Such nice words, I couldn't agree with you more.

    Best.

  • This man is in the same league as Frank Sinatra.Unfortunately, neither are with us anymore, but I am certain they will never be forgotten

  • Thanks for adding this treasure, the world would be a poorer place without Youtube. R.I.P Matt

  • Matt at his best. A great song, a great singer, what more!!

This is my Dad's favorite singer and i can see why. !! Dont worry about gimmicks, Matt can claim 'the best singer ever'.

  • Docs should prescribe Matt for relaxation. Safe the NHS a fortune.

  • My father's favourite song

  • @lazanaYT Your father has good taste ! My favourite too!

  • truly an awesome and unforgettable voice. Thanks for this.

  • Matt recorded many great songs and this is one of my favorites.

I'm working on a tribute show to the man

  • It would be something for the so called "stars" of today to be made to watch this.... to watch what real talent sounds like. To watch the master just sing from the heart... and just sing live and sound fantastic. To see him sing with no effort, no strained notes, no miming. He went to soon, but what music he left us RIP Matt, a TRUE star!

  • GOLD SIMPLY GOLD!

  • What ask the girl the walk away ???

  • My mum used to sing along with this, when she heard it on the radio, Happy memories

  • And remember , this LIVE ! No prerecorded tracks to lip sync to !

    Magnificent !

    Cheers !

    David

  • Favorite song of my grandfa and my uncles.=)

  • Outstanding talent. Sinatra said Matt was the greatest singer in the world. Certainly he was the greatest crooner.

  • Th finest voice to come out of these isles. Frank Sinatra was brilliant but Matt was something very special. Died too young and we miss him

  • R.I,P. Ronnie Dio

  • One of the greatest ever! Left us much too soon...rest in peace.

  • You could listen to numerous good singers from todays talent shows but most of them are totally forgetable. So what makes Matt Munro different from all the rest. Pure class and he has an inernational sound just like Bassey or Sinatra. His voice is just so unique and smooth. A true star. Jim

  • I  u dad...

    How i miss u...

  • This is great, Congratulation for you had posted this great singer with this beauiful song.

  • i love all the music of matt it remind me of my yesteryears, thanks for

    uploading

  • this man seems to bring me to a state of true peace just to hear his music, i was lucky enough to grow up with him on the radio all the time, he was in my book the finest male singer to ever have been thanks matt r.i.p

  • nostalgic

  • What a voice, as smooth as mellow scotch! This is my favorite song of his. Sadly, another great artist taken from us way too soon. It's just not fair, but he left us a great legacy of music. Definitely, without any doubt, the Frank Sinatra of Great Britian!!

  • matt monro the best male singer ever

  • This guy is just fabulous, what voice

  • Up there with Sinatra when it comes to great singers.Legend

  • Matt is the only singer that made me cry!

  • @buscapleitosNo1 i feel the same as you do.his voice i so beautiful, so special.

  • @buscapleitosNo1 same with me,Matt Monro is the only singer that can make me cry as well and can you imagine what feelings and pain he must have gone through to give this to us the people. all the best.

  • Matt is sadly missed, he was "THE SINGERS SINGER", he brought a song to life like no other. My favourite is "ONE DAY", I can recall singing to my Girlfriend at that time, 1962/3. Alan.

  • brilliant memories of my mum, matt munroe, was her favourite singer,as with matt,my mum is no longer with us

  • Matt Monroe one the best singers that Britain has produced !!. Such a gifted and special voice who has sung some of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard !! This is what you call !real talent! Sadly he left this life so soon ! but what a lagacy !! Sinatra regarded Matt Monroe as one of the greatest singers !!.

  • matt monroe is a prophet too! i worship all his songs!

  • the voice! the way he sings! my goodness! magnificent! he is the king of crooners!

  • Max & Laura love most of his songs it reminds of our old golden days ..thanks

  • Matt Monro represented the UK in the 1964 Eurovision Song Contest. His song was "I love the little things", and it came 2nd. This song was the Austrian entry that same year: "Warum, nur warum" by Udo Jürgens (who would win the Contest in 1966). It only came 6th in the Contest, but subsequently became a huge hit in Matt's English version. Great stuff!

  • Thank You for posting this !

  • Does any one have a copy of "On days like this " from the movie Italian Job . Please upload it ASAP

  • zakikhan52 - 'On Days Like These'

  • ...Why build a dream that cannot come true..

    beautiful song.

  • Even though I am 45 now, I wish I was "aware" of these songs when I was younger. Songs like this are timeless. How many of todays songs will you still remember in 40 years time, none I reckon. but songs like this will still be around.

Fantastic to see a different version of this

    BTW...well said policemanandrew

  • I'm 25 and i sing, and this man One of my greatest musical influences... His legacy lives on.

  • I love matt Monro's You're closer to me". It was in You Tube before...now it is suddenly gone. Does anyone have a copy?

  • One of the best singers of the 20th Century. Not bad for a London Bus Driver Eh

  • He was known as a "singer's" singer. Dame Shirley Bassey when she was only a Miss(lol) used to like going to his concerts.

  • Yes, he was one of the BEST! I refer to him as my British Jack Jones. A great singer.................

  • jaqck jones cant sing ,,but matt can

  • Fantastic singer.I think this was from a performance from Austrialia 1967. Some others on it have been cancelled. I think that is a mistake; hearing the great song there makes me want to buy MM CD's. Unlike some performers he was at his best live before an audience. Such drama, power, melody. I love you Matt, Godspeed.

  • How can the "yoof" of today listen to all that jungle music on Radio 1 and dismiss this?

The media are saying that easy listening is (or has) come back but trying telling my bloody children that!!!!

Beautiful song sang by a beautiful man.

  • One of the all time great vocalists ! I have enjoyed his music since the early 1960's. He is definitely under appreciated.

  • Exquisite!

  • It was liver cancer actually ........... in 1985

  • Try doing some research before putting comments up like that.

  • One of the best male vocalists, EVER. I could never tire of listening to Matt Monro.

  • vry happy

  • Or type in Youtube:

Matt Monro - The Is The Life

    :)

  • If you click my name you can hear Matt Monro's This Is The Life. One of his greatest songs.:)

  • jcreyes1950, thanks for the very detailed story; the biography of matt monro.

  • Matt was the BEST! What a shame there are no singers like that around anymore. Miss you Matt!!!

  • there is one singer around today MICHAEL BUBLE he is very good yes matt monroe was an amazing singer for me the best singer of this type of music was MEL TORME

  • Matt had an exceptional voice, listening to him brings peace to one's soul. Jcreyes, thanks for posting this wonderful video; would you please upload, "Soaftly as I Leave You," from this same b&w collection? It sure would be so nice to see it again.

  • Matt is king

  • Re the Sinatra debate, Frank was great but this guy sang from the heart and his voice simply unique, most definitely the UKs best singer ever and easily comaparable to Frank

This guy gives a superlative performance not just in Walk Away but in all his songs, simply brilliant artist, brilliant voice and terrific unsurpassed delivery.

  • Not only do I agree but I believe he is a better and more inspired vocalist then Frank Sinatra was. Although I am American I have been a fan of his since I first heard him sing this song in the 1960's

May God rest his soul, I miss his talent tremendously.

  • Probably the best Ballad Singer The World Has ever seen, this classic song simply underpins the powerful vocals of a singing star who voice has simply never been matched and remaind unsurpassed - RIP Matt

  • This is just the english version of the German original: "Warum nur warum" sang by Udo Jürgens in 1964 - btw: Monro's "If I never sing another song" is also just a cover version of the song "Illusionen" sang by Alexandra and which was written also by Udo Jürgens.

  • One of the greatest vocal talents of all time. And Walk Away is a truly fabulous ballad. I just loved this!

  • Let's enjoy Britain's Sinatra - good old Matt Monroe.

Sinatra #1 for USA but Matt #1 for the Brits.

    Great song

  • I like Matt Monro. For my money he is the best singer to come out of Britain. But you people need to get ahold of yourselves. Nobody interprets a song like Frank Sinatra. When you here a Sinatra version of a song, you realize that's what the writer had in mind. Not to mention the fact that he invented the album format. I like both Sinatra and Monro, but Sinatra is an icon. One of the two or three most important artists of the twentieth century.

  • frank sinatra was overated.

  • Sorry Classic-

Matt puts more into any song than Sanatra ever did- he thought he was charming and that let him get away with a really ordinary sound. Monroe is a true artist- with a stunning voice.

  • Sorry for the typo - by "FJ", I was obviously meaning to type FS, as in FRANK.

  • Frank Sinatra was an interpretive singer, which is more of an American style, but it's more difficult to be. Interpretive singers work to project emotion, atmosphere, setting and attitude through the notes they sing. They also extend notes to express emotion and move listeners, rather than rounding those notes off. Frank may have been envious that his voice didn't reach notes so precisely as Monro's did, but I'm sure that FJ was prouder of being an interpretive singer, which made him a legend.

  • i realy love all matt monroe's song. i listen to his songs almost everyday.

  • Monro was one of the best male vocalists EVER. I don't believe he received the accolades he deserved. I never tire from listening to any of his many hits. Sad how he died so young.

  • Wonderful this song from U.Jürgens, and he sings

    it much better, Love it!!!!!

  • Matt Monro...the sultan of smooth! He has such good control, so eloquent...wow!

  • Good posting,Frank Sinatra admired Matt, not a lot of people know that,by the way..

  • no way Fran Snatra was brill. and he is one of a kind. exclante u go Matt
