The cellist is indeed Maynard's son Devo. And as Pahndora commented, Billy wrote the lyrics and music for A Perfect Circle as well as this, and is doing the vocals for Ashes Divide. He also did the vocals on a couple of A Perfect Circle tracks from eMOTIVE.

like someone already said, this band is not a side project. It is a band that has been created by billy, the guitarist of TOOL and apc. he put apc together. he put this band together. everyone including the drummer from apc, the girl bassist, maynards son, devo, plays cello, and billy sings and plays guitar. maynard has no part in this band. hopefully he sings in one of their songs, i miss his amazing voice!!

its kinda hard not to when Billy was the founder of APC, which was more or less his training ground for this band. Billy used APC to find himself as a musician. But he has his own voice, which deserves to be heard. the two bands will sound very close, mostly because they both share a common element: Howerdel being the key member writing all the songs. Maynard did vocals and lyrics for APC, but all the music was Howerdel. In this band as well, all of it is Howerdel. how can u not compare them?

Maynard reworked most of the core structures and sequences of the songs to fit melodically with the vocals he wrote. He was also responsible for the production and played an active role in the mixing process...

They are of course similar in some respects, because Billy was associated with both bands, so yeah the guitar sounds for one are actually quite similar, notably resonant and heavy on the reverb. Also it's got that sort of progressive metally sound that Tool and APC have, and is in 3/4 time, similar to many songs by the bands. Loads of similarities. Way more than that too.

most of the songs off this record didn't live up to APC...i really think that billy could have done better with the guitar work, but this song is pretty good.

Just so you know -- this is not a side band of Tool. Billy Howerdel created A Perfect Circle and was the lyricist. Maynard James Keenan sang in Tool and APC. Billy Howerdel is the front man and singer in Ashes Divide. ^_^

yeah a side band from tool would be puscifer that is maynards little side project, momma sed i would say is one of my fav. songs on v is for vagina. but this is a very good song from billy.

@Pahndora2012 Maynard also was a words man for APC, meaning that he co-wrote most of the songs and where Billy was stuck(like on wording and such.) Maynard helped out.
