With an incredible cast, brilliant writing, excellent directing and a fresh TRUE story, this dark wonderful indie film is truly worth your time. If you get the DVD, be sure to watch the special goodies which includes a CAST Q& A that's hysterical. If your a new writer or a rookie director, you guys will DEFINITELY want to study this one because its a model in the arts & sciences of good-old-fashioned movie making.
This was good. Robert isolates himself for 40 years because when he was young he fell inlove with a married women, the husband of the women found out, beat her with a hammer and set the house on fire. He throws a funeral party so settle all rumors and tell people the truth. It was great i liked it
@FrankSpanknSlap i feel so sorry for you, that you can only enjoy a movie if there are some explosions and special effects in it. you will be missing many great movies.
Bill Murray's a decent actor, but I never realized till 57 seconds that he's such a crater face! (Sorry, I know that's mean, but it was just an observation)
After seeing "Your Highness" with a friend (I'd never heard of it) and walking out after 30 min of sheer stupidity, imho), this was such a reward. Great story, nice acting, great song (Lay My burden Down) by Alison Krauss.
This was overall good movie. The acting was excellent, Murray was hilarious as always. My only gripe is that the second act is mostly pointless but the first and third acts are brilliant.
@frickadele Right. Except for this one.. and every other film that makes anyone say "they don't make films like this anymore". I think you may need to watch more films, my friend.
@frickadele Didn't much feel like compiling a list, but if I must, I'd say some recent films of a more subtle, slow-paced variety (like this one seems to be) would be;
No Country For Old Men (classic), Children of Men (US/UK production), True Grit (2010), Gran Torino (An unexpectedly sombre drama), 3:10 To Yuma 2007 (maybe not the greatest, but a pretty solid, brooding western), The Aviator, The Departed (not really slow-paced, meh). Most 'great' dramas I hear about are US; Winter's Bone etc.
@frickadele FYI, I'm not American (I wish there were more great films that weren't from the US, actually), I just think that bad movies have always been made, they just filter out of our memories over time, leaving only the classics. I too, wish I saw much less of them though.
@frickadele I'm not isolated. You think because Australia is an island that we don't have access to the internet? I see plenty of films, MANY that aren't from hollywood. I just didn't see anything special in this film that made it seem great in contrast to other recent American releases. Especially Western Drama, I mean come on, there have been a few of those lately.
Film overall has seemed stagnant of late, in my eyes.
@egrewing74 How many American movies are made per year? How many of them are good movies, as of late? Some 1967 movies: Bonnie and Clyde- Dr. Doolittle- The Graduate- Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?- In the Heat of the Night- Cool Hand Luke- The Dirty Dozen- Barefoot in the Park- In Cold Blood- Two for the Road- Camelot- Now...do you get my drift?
@Shibby21 Hey jackoff, you liked it and I felt it was a pile of shit that doesn't make you anymore superior or educated then anyone else. The fact that you are so upset with a view that differs from yours shows how ignorant you are. Your Simpson comment was laughable at best. So next time think for a second, or you will find garbage coming out of your mouth that sounds ridiculous.
This is Oscar worthy movie making. Wayyy better than Kings Speech. Never even saw it in theaters, at all. Excellent performances from DuVall and Muarry. Sissy Spacek also. Beautiful looking film. Sublime direction. A+

the other trailer of this, at 1:35, there is this background song i wanna know the title.. does anyone know? it's a girl singing.. something like, "i wanna lay my burdens down..."..
Great cast I was sad that it didn't get more play then it deserved! Also Linds Edwards the radio host, I have had the pleasure of knowing him as a friend and directing him in my short "In a Blink" a great guy and I am sure we will be seeing him more often.
@GardinerC I totally agree with you...I JUST stumbled upon this trailer today, and I can't believe I haven't seen it. I love the entire cast, and I'm sure it's brilliant.
this is most definitely a true story because we have a family friend in western NC and this is actually about his grandfather, his mom actually retold the story and sold the rights, Robert Duvall plays his grandfather, so we were all excited about this!

@cuntarama69: Other than the idea of being around to consider one's own death (which has been treated in several films), the stories and universes the characters inhabit have little to say to one another. Not to diminish any achievement by the team which created The Living Wake, the film is a low-budget independent and at times looks it, and is ultimately very uneven. The folks who worked on Get Low are absolutely as top-notch as one can find, and is based on a true incident in 1938.

I know you're not from the USA...
because I took the nanosecond time out to find that out.
There are great movies from ALL around the world...
China (big time), Brazil,Pakistan. But when you're isolated...your mainstream media...
will only tell you what they want to tell you.
There are 215 countries around the world.
Stop focusing on Hollywood for entertainment.
That would be your BIG mistake.
