When the history of C20th Music is written in one hundred years time, they will be asking why Pierre Boulez was even considered seriously. What a talentless man.
Great footage. Wonderful camera angles. And Boulez! Who could possibly argue the guy is not fifty years ahead of his time! He doesnt move his feet, his gestures have a wonderful robotic look, and the sunglasses!!!! WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!
can u imagine someone doing that in a large hall. The sunglasses.Fresh, new, sexy. This is good old days. Was I even hatched yet.So much boulez on youtube thats why I love it here.

Thanks for this great archive material on Boulez. I had wondered what his conducting was like in the sixties as I have read that after a break from directing he came back with a softer, more lyrical conducting technique.
During the days about Boulez in Le Louvre in nov-dec 2008 ('Le Louvre invites Pierre Boulez'), where this film was given, he said that he had just got eczema the day before registering and that it was the reason he wore these surprising binoculars...
The DVD includes an explanatory note, almost an apology, about the sunglasses: "The then 41-year-old conductor was suffering from shingles, making him extremely sensitive to the light. Not wanting to cancel the recording, he decided to wear sunglasses in order to be able to tolerate the lighting in the hall, giving this archival recording an altogether unusual aspect."
I may not like avant garde music. But Mr Boulez is a very talented conductor.

the sunglasses are to protect the conductors eyes from the harsh lighting effects devised by the BBC.

Boulez actually had a medical reason to wear sunglasses at that occasion.

Thanks for uploading, Naxos. (You have a very fine collection of music, anyhow!)
