  • I may not like avant garde music. But Mr Boulez is a very talented conductor.

  • Obviously, too much lights!

  • When the history of C20th Music is written in one hundred years time, they will be asking why Pierre Boulez was even considered seriously. What a talentless man.

  • Great footage. Wonderful camera angles. And Boulez! Who could possibly argue the guy is not fifty years ahead of his time! He doesnt move his feet, his gestures have a wonderful robotic look, and the sunglasses!!!! WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • the sunglasses are to protect the conductors eyes from the harsh lighting effects devised by the BBC.

  • On dirait un film de Jean-Luc Godard

  • the sunglasses! haha

  • Nice Look!

  • esa manitooo!

  • can u imagine someone doing that in a large hall. The sunglasses.Fresh, new, sexy. This is good old days. Was I even hatched yet.So much boulez on youtube thats why I love it here.

  • The big Hunter S. Thompson head on him!

  • The 'Takt Beater'

  • Boulez actually had a medical reason to wear sunglasses at that occasion.

  • it would have been great if the whole orchestra had sunglasses on:)

  • Absolutely agree

  • Why on earth did he ever stop wearing them? I like him when he was this intense.

  • Um, why on earth is he wearing sunglasses?

  • the BRASS

  • @Bolinas1971 For example, the perfectly matched, distinctly shaped rhythm and articulation in the muted trumpets

  • Waou, les lunettes !!

    ;-)

    (incredible sun glasses!)

  • 1908 hasn't happened yet. It's still 1906.

  • Thanks for this great archive material on Boulez. I had wondered what his conducting was like in the sixties as I have read that after a break from directing he came back with a softer, more lyrical conducting technique.

    Thanks again.

  • ROBOCOP!

  • haha

  • During the days about Boulez in Le Louvre in nov-dec 2008 ('Le Louvre invites Pierre Boulez'), where this film was given, he said that he had just got eczema the day before registering and that it was the reason he wore these surprising binoculars...

  • sorry the exact term he employed was zona, I think, that is 'shingles' in English

  • as abdominizer wrote... in a preceding post, so far unnoticed to me... sorry

  • That's hilarious! Boulez conducting with shades on! Debussy's Fetes no less..

  • extremely cool. he should've stuck with that look

  • The DVD includes an explanatory note, almost an apology, about the sunglasses: "The then 41-year-old conductor was suffering from shingles, making him extremely sensitive to the light. Not wanting to cancel the recording, he decided to wear sunglasses in order to be able to tolerate the lighting in the hall, giving this archival recording an altogether unusual aspect."

  • WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW, COOOOOOOOOOOL

  • Puck the Fly conducting... fabulous!

  • omg, this is hilarious.

    pierre you're such a badass.

  • He looks like a cop regulating the traffic! Looks pretty cool

  • I've never seen a conductor with sunglasses while at work! Ha ha, great guy & musician.

Thanks for uploading, Naxos. (You have a very fine collection of music, anyhow!)

  • Love the sunglasses, Pierre.
