@memmies What does that mean? And you should never be ashamed by musical variety & other artists doing their own interpretation of a song. I don't know about "Judgement Day," but I'm surprised to find out that you 're the one doing the preliminary judging. Thanks for clearing that one up for me...
Once in Seattle I walked onto this woman by mistake chasing my kids while i was singing this song,epic!!!.....Since then my little girl always sings this song for me and for the woman , she was Merrille Rush.
Every version of this song is very pretty and Juice Newton is a terrific singer but as I just said a minute ago, the first time I heard this song in my life was by Merrillee Rush, and she also is a great singer.
This version is still the best (to my ears). Many have great versions of this song -- Juice Newton -- but Ms. Rush has the killer. Recorded with Elvis' Memphis studio band & nominated for a Grammy. (There's that word again). People can prefer other versions but that's what they are -- versions. Try to enjoy the song by the artist you like -- leave the comparisons at the door. You don't win awards for topping an original version. Most people remember Ms Rush having the hit.
I don't care that most people think this one is the best. When it comes to songs, it's always a matter of opinion. I like Evie Sands' version WAY better. In fact I don't like this version at all.
My mother is now 75 years old. She has finished writing her autobiography. Each one of her eight children received a copy. My copy of her autobiography is now tear-stained. From my own tears. I would like to give it to you. May I, please?
I remember listening to this song by this artist while getting ready for elementary school . The other song that brings back fond memories is Love is Blue by Paul Maurait .
As a 50+er one wonders what happened to all the others that wandered down the road of this ethos. No I didn't but know a whole lot of really special people that did.
Just call me angel in the morning by Merrillee Rush and Gale Garnets "We'll sing in the sunshine" were ground breakers because they portray the woman chosing non-committal sexual lifestyles. Wether it was for a one night stand or a one year affair. The woman in charge of her sexuality!? That was bold stuff back then.
@honypoboy There was another song on that same theme called "Dancing to the beat of a Different Drum" which came out in the late 60's. I can't remember who sung it.
@asbpab1966 Are you talking about "You and I travel to the beat of a different drum/Can't you tell by the way I run everytime you make eyes at me...?" That's "Different Drum" by Linda Ronstadt & the Stone Poneys. The song was written by the one and only, my daughter's namesake & birthday twin, the great Michael Nesmith.
The first time I heard this song she was doing it the a show called "Happening" hosted by Paul Revere and the Raiders. The show would come on in the afternoon on ABC I think the year was 1968.
The first time I heard this song she was doing it the a show called "Happening" hosted by Paul Revere and the Raiders. The show would come on in the afternoon on ABC I think the year was 1968.
no disrespect but this is anything but a sweet song, not saying I don't like it because I do, but she's talking about a one night stand. (read the lyrics)
Sweet song. My dates always seemed to swoon when this played on the radio. Wow. Those were sweet evneings for sure. I wish today we had more of these songs. Oh, well. It is what it is. My time has passed.

ahh love. The onrequited, unattainable kind. When you can only have a glimpse of it it makes it you want more. Better not to taste that apple if one bite is all you can ever have. This song is about the bitter sweetness of that chance encounter full of emotions and feelings yet signifying nothing. To sleep, perchance to dream. The thing is that this is a universal occurrence to the romantically inclined whether it actually happened or was just imagined.
Merilee is still a looker. My guitar when I was 14 fellas. All analogue. basic 5 players done in Seattle and the rest in LA. Mid 60's. Fun lives we had then.
I love this song but there is very little romance involved in it.
The music is soothing but what exactly is romantic about sleeping with an involved man that's in a hurry to get back to his girlfriend before you wake up in the morning?
@MultiAwesome7 I don't see it that way. It could be the ache of a woman who doesn't want any entanglements, but she's silently listening to the pulls of her heart. I've been in a relationship for 15 years and although I love him, it's better that he go home in the morning.
Definitely the best, by far, no two ways about it. Juice Newton's take was great, and there's that rapper fella, Shaggy or whatsisname, he's got an interesting spin on this old classic, but Merrilee's version absolutely puts the rest to shame.
Nope, Mnguy57 is incorrect. Evie Sands recorded it first. Her's was much cheaper in the production and it sounds more, "raw" so to speak. I have yet to find a version of this song I DON'T like. I do like others more, but I do not find any bad. I personally prefer P P Arnold's version. No real reason, I just do. However, I would never refuse to listen to Ms. Rush sing it either, which is why I vist this version nearly as much as I do P P's version.
Actually the original was by Evie Sands according to "Before They Were Hits" vol 5
However, I do agree Merilee Rush's renditon is by far the best. Evie Sands' original, has a similar arrangement, but somehow lacks the energy of Merilee Rush's famous rendition. Her's IS the first version to become a hit.
This has to one of the most beautiful songs from its era. ronjm23, you are right, Merilee's version is and will always be the best version of this song. Good job maskedfragment.
This another one of those songs that has been recorded multiple times by many artists but in my opinion Merilee's remains the best. Your visuals are pretty good as well. Thanks for posting.
everyday i take the time to wake up and watch the sun rise because this life will not last long, there is an irony in the sky and humility of my soul each time the edge of the sun appears on the horizon, 'life is not about you" - God
Funny thing it's been about 40 years now since I remember this song on the radio and the jukebox at Moms & Pops Pizza. Seems like so long ago now. I still like the song.
thank you for posting this, as apposed to all those shit versions of it floating around youtube.... as if anybody would want to listen to them... why did they even bother posting them
I made the treck from Florida to the beautiful scenic land of upstate NY a few days ago... as my dad was dying. The cloud formations above the pine trees and telephone poles left a lasting imprint on my mind, from hours of meditation and reliving the past with my dad. Although he was in a coma, when I touched his cheek I know he recognized me. He died this morning, then this song played. The video is perfect, thanks Masked Fragment. Bruce Manell 2.26.22--7.7.09 RIP my Angel of the Morning.
Angel of the Morning" was written by Chip Taylor born James Wesley Voight, younger brother of actor Jon Voight and uncle to actress Angelina Jolie who also wrote Wild Thing a hit for The Troggs in 1966 and I Can't Let Go a hit for The Hollies. Rush's recording of Angel of the Morning was featured prominently in the film, Girl, Interrupted for which Jolie won an Academy Award. Angel of the Morning has also been featured in the movie Jerry Maguire and Fingers starring Harvey Keitel.
It's hard to say if this or Juice Newton's version is better. I, like most of the younger listeners, am more familiar and used to JN's version. This version is from the 60's so logically the 80's version has a bigger production and it sounds more grand and epic but this original has an innocence to it that's very appealing. I think music, like everything in life is very relative. If someone in the 60's heard JN's version then they might think it's not as good as MR's version and vice versa.
Yes there is - UK;s Billie Davis, who is still performing this song on a tour this year, I agree that Rush's version is very good, but just listen to Davis's - great brass.
Everybody's got different taste, but I've listened to about a dozen versions of this and for my money, Merilee Rush nailed it the first time and did it right.
to be honest, its my first xperience of hearing this original version. i used and familiar with the JUICE Newton version, its very nice, i learned to love this song way back then but never heared it again till this day..... realy great great song,,,,,, memories from behind[:].>>>>
I like this arrangement the best. Had and affair that started like hers. Should've left it at that, but couldn't leave it alone for three years ('79 - '82). Ought to write a song about it: "It Was Desperation I Know!" Can laugh about it, now. () ; LOL!
I listened to the Nina Simone version of this song non stop every day whilst driving to visit my dad in hospital earlier this year. He died on January 25th and I sang my heart out to this song as I drove home that night. I had the Merrillee Rush version played at the end of his funeral, this song is truly moving. Wholly inappropriate for a funeral (when you listen to the words) but never the less a truly meaningful song to me and one that I will treasure forever. Love you dad x

I agree, Merrillee Rush's voice was just made for this song. This is beautifully done.

Is Chip Taylor the same guy who produced for the Monkees?

@maskedfragment Where in NC? It's hard to see through the trees, but it looks like it might be Highway 301 near Fayetteville.

I like this arrangement the best. Had and affair that started like hers. Should've left it at that, but couldn't leave it alone for three years ('79 - '82). Ought to write a song about it: "It Was Desperation I Know!" Can laugh about it, now. () ; LOL!

What wonderful memories hearing this song brings back, particularly this version by Merilee Rush. It's so much better than the Juice Newton cover.
