@adliikhwan280 Well, Windows 98 wasn't the most internet-aware version of Windows ever, but virtualbox will allow you to connect the VM directly to the internet using a bridge to your host's network adapter. Or, if you're (rightly) concerned for the guest OS' wellbeing online, you can patch it through the host-only adapter to create a private network which you can share files through, or proxy out to the web and filter malicious incoming traffic.
@minetogiveaway I know, I already used VirtualBox to emulate lots of programs. But I can't set up the internet since my modem doesn't have a CD and its made years after Windows 98.
@adliikhwan280 The idea is that VirtualBox provides an abstraction layer between the hardware you have and the hardware the guest OS sees. You shouldn't need the driver for your actual modem - but you might need to find a Windows 98 backport of the virtualbox net device driver, since Win98 isn't officially supported as a guest any more they don't offer a version for it.
I got MS -DOS 6.22 and I also got Windows 3 and I got Windows 95 and Windows 98 don't download this because it will be called breaking the law just buy one.
@KrCKrewLegend If you have a .vdi / .vhd file, what you have is an image of the FAT32 filesystem in our imaginary hard drive. So no, you wouldn't need the disk, provided it was set up by someone who already had the disk.
The trouble with distributing those files is size, and legality of shipping even unsupported Windows version is something I'd want to look into before arguing with Microsoft's legal department.
@uacv333 It's not much of a problem from my end to do so, no. Or at least it wouldn't be, if I still had the vhd images, but I don't have this setup at the moment (Reformatted drive since this tutorial).
@MrBob1213 I'm here, sort of. I keep forgetting to update my phone with my new password so I can't reply to comments on the move, which is usually the only way I ever have time.
I'm not sure why but I had to disable both Virtualization checkboxes on my setup in VirtualBox otherwise the dos based part was impossible to read, I hope I'll be able to set them back on after.
Curious if you can help -- after my VirtualBox goes through SCANDISK and should go to setup, it freezes on a black screen showing the HOURGLASS and does not move from there. Any helps?
@thumper300zx It may be due to your setup in some way, but I've not encountered it - the only freeze I've seen is with the fixed size storage units. How did you set the box up?
@minetogiveaway I'm using 128mb RAM, 32MB Video ram, 2 GB Dynamic HDD, formatting in Fat 32, changed to SB 16, hardware acceleration, etc (just as you showed -- I only looked up your tutorial after I was already having the same issue). The initial setup goes flawlessly. Allocates the disk space, restart, formats, goes through ScanDisk -- then freezes. I'm running on Win7, 8GB ram, i5 m560 (DellXPS17). BTW I've tried install with a CD Rom and with an .iso off the hard drive. Same result.
@minetogiveaway I stepped it down to 64mb RAM and turned off Virtualization and was able to install -- we'll see how it goes when I change those back.
Sorry, your video demonstration is really brilliant but after i had formatted, installation is locked, when there is write "Copying files needed for Windows Setup..." and it doesn't go on,still lock there
I made everything like you showed. I have one problem. MS-DOS mode is not working. After I turn on this mode, the screen is black. I see some bushes, some marks... What to do? please, help
uhhh why does this have to be so complicated! after mine finished setting up it made me re-boot and it endlessly keeps rebooting because it says "Quit one or more memory-resident programs or remove unnecessary utilities from your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files, and restart your computer."
i have plenty of memory avalible on both the virtual machine and my actual pc so im not sure what to do any ideas?
@willcool52 well i lowered the amount of ram i used but it wasnt worth it anyway even the simplest games lag very bad because there is no hardware acceleration
@RichyXYZ123 Define "Simplest" - I'm playing some of my older favourite 2D games quite happily. 3D hardware acceleration is lacking, yes, but that's not to say that there's no worth in knocking this kind of setup up for the games you miss from the old days.
Indeed, the game I set up in the video works quite nicely, and you could play games like the old DOOM games with minimal difficulty - I think you need to set your sights a little lower.
@minetogiveaway i played frogger 3d which is frogger 1 and although it is 3d it is not very demanding as it was made in 1997 and i only get like 7 fps when i play it so i dont think i will ever get to play my old favorites anymore =(
@Prolitd I'm not sure what you mean. Did you make an ISO from a Windows CD? Try using the CD itself and linking the drive to Virtualbox instead, sometimes it works better (but slower).
@1111winter4w Assuming you mean the Windows 98 image here, I'm afraid I can't give out links to enable you to download it as I'm unsure of the legal standpoint thereabouts. It was a bit of a bugger to find but there are copies out there in the usual places one would look for torrents and such things.
Given that Windows 98 is unsupported and quite possibly "OK" to share, it could be easier to get hold of.
How dafuq are you supposed to use the internet with that thing D:<

@Stinkfussjoe1 Sorry, I've never seen that error before.

@Stinkfussjoe1 Go to Configuration > System > Processor > Disable both options, VTX-AMD and Pagination. This will fix that error
9esferas1 2 months ago
@Stinkfussjoe1 Try disabling VT-x/AMD-V acceleration. Older 9x versions of Windows don't seem to like VT-x/AMD-V very much, it seems.

I'm actually using VMware, just wanted to see how to install the 98 drivers for modern graphics cards.
Thanks to the iso you provided, i had no problems setting up my graphics driver.
Everything works great now. Thanks
