Terrible. Do they have to catch a train or something? All Bach's beautiful melodic lines are flushed through in this childish competition of "who can play fastest"? The movement is 'allegro', not 'prestissimo'.
the fast forward buttom hasn't been changed. Nigel get a grip. As the Americans so delicately put it. Your heart is bleak and therefore can display the truth not showpieces.
What did the emperor say to Mozart? "The human ear can hear only so many notes in a day"? or something like that. Well he should have said "the human ear can only hear so many notes per minute" Slow down next time and enjoy the music.
I listened to the first 20 seconds of the Largo and gave up, It made me more tense than calm.
@hamballsario "Allegro" is certainly up for interpretation these days, as with Bach's final movement in his third Brandenburg concerto and numerous other works.
I'm not a musician, just an ordinary person who loves classical music, especially of Baroque period. I also prefer when this piece is played a bit slower, but I value & enjoy Nigel Kennedy's performances. You can totally tell he's one with the music & knows what he's doing and that's really what I'm after. I don't care much about musicians who play like robots, even if they are technically correct.
pues si es virtuoso, pero en obras como esta y por la época se va al extremo este cabrón, mas que interpretar parece disfrutar demostrar ante el público la rapidez de sus dedos.
All of you who think that this is too fast are wrong. I've performed with Kennedy and he is very exacting about his tempi and extremely well studied concerning the compositions.
@danwojc - that's true: faster doesn't mean better! I think Nigel likes to be a bit controversial with his playing! He does the same thing with Vivaldi! But he is a very good player. Apparently Mozart complained that people played his music much too fast!
LOL. That was a true battle. Great players, both, but Nigel overestimated his qualities a bit; in the most fast movement for the violin in this III part it goes wrong:
1) At 1.09m. he cannot come with the tempo and at 2) 1.16min a few wrong notes.
Way too fast, at least for me to savor any notes whatsovever. The speed and pitch standards have changed since Bach's time. Let's at least keep the pitch at A=440 forever.
@jsnauwaert If it's so tasteless, I don't see you with better taste playing up there with hundreds of thousands of people watching. Where is your crowd at?
they're shredding, i dont see what the problem is, he's not just playing fast, there's lots of dynamics , there's more than one way to play bach.... its not to fast, ....niggers
In my opinion the best ever, point-of-reference interpretation is of Manze and Academy of Ancient Music (1996). It lasts for 3'32". Nigel plays it definitely too fast. 2'41" is not enough to enjoy...
You gotta give Ms. Casey credit!! She kept up with Nigel. I've played this piece several times (oboe) and I'd have killed the violinist if he/she had taken that tempo!! . Many oboists would have sounded "honky" at the tempo. And it was at least fun. And the performers were having fun. Check out some of the looks Ms. Casey gave Nigel!! Yeh it was too fast , but Ms. Casey did a great job I wouldn't give this much artistic merit, but sometimes we just need to have some freaked out fun!!
robysalain --Vous avez raison mon ami.--(French there ,Not bad for an Englishman).I`m old enough to remember Nigel when he wore formal Black.Much nicer!(Dommage!!)
Ok to all of you who think that this performance is "too fast and unmusical" I've PLAYED Bach with Kennedy and he is flat out one of the greatest musicians I know. He does not pick his tempi willy nilly but is extremely exacting in his interpretations. Listen to this rendition again attentively this time and without preconcieved notions of tempo and you can hear more nuance and musicality than most recordings at half this speed.
I've heard numerous performances of this piece, even played fast, but this is definitely TOO FAST. That's presto, not allegro. Where Bach meant vivace or presto, he put it down thus. Just listen to the violin at 1m06s-1m19s, what's that supposed to be? On can hardly distinguish the sounds! It's not innovative to make the audience suffocate. It's simply unauthentic
What gives you the right to call an interpretation unauthentic simply because you don't like it. You didn't live in Cothen Germany in the early 1700s. You haven't the foggiest idea what authentic actually was. None of us knows. If you don't like the way someone plays, by all means say so. But attacking someone's artistic integrity (especially one of the greatest violinists of our day) belittles you. Oh and listen to 1m06s again...every note is hit cleanly and musically.
AMAZING playing, but definitely waaaay too fast! Some of the best bits just get glossed over, which is a shame. Still fantastic to listen to though :)
i think they were just bored an wanted to have some fun with that speeeeeed! listening to it is almost exhausting but playing it that fast for sure is fun...
yeah, this is played just a tad too fast...well, thats a lie...a LOT too fast. but regardless of that, it was pretty good. I'm an oboist and i'm going to be playing htis by christmas
A real master at playing an instrument knows when to put his virtuosity aside and concentrate on the content of the piece. Which is rich and supposed to bring delight and not the impression of a hare trying to flee hounds during a hunting!

Just listen to the three G (2:33/2:34) of the tutti, which are full of drive in this interpretation contrary to spreading notes of other performances, which befoul such a magnificent music. Everything is right, everyone plays with one another. Simple emissions, pure sounds not polluted by too much stupid vibrato of pretentious performers, only good at show off their little talent ... Shall you listen other pieces by N.Kennedy ?
Here is an outstanding interpretation at last !! Beyond all the hackneyed performances we constantly hear, thanks to most musicians (all the more conservative than poorly innovative) , Nigel Kennedy, Aisling Casey and the ICO succeed in performing genuine music with the required energy : baroque music has to be led and it needs anticipation, which is mostly lacking.
