Yes that's right, I'm using just a webcam. Although a rather good one, being able to capture at 30fps is important, otherwise the view would be jerky.
With expensive head-tracking devices what you pay for is reliability. The disadvantage of the webcam and my pixel-color-distance marker detection is that it can be thrown off by objects in the background with similar color to the markers. That's why I use a dark room with bright LEDs, to avoid interference (my first video used just brightly colored objects as markers).

you can use infrared LEDs and place filter for visible lights in front of the lens... and remove the IR filter if your webcam has one... and your dailight problem would be solved.
