What an awesome ancient looking lighthouse..I am not sure what natural gas fissure is..but, how interesting...I really love lighthouses..and, cannot believe that someone is kind enough to give us some insight and share their beauty with us...Thanks so much!
Thanks Chris and Sandra, What beautiful photos. The ones wtih the still water were incredible! I bet it isn't that still very often. What a beautiful area...it really does do good to get rid of my stereotypical idea of what a New York ocean view would look like (NYC). It actually reminds me somewhat of the San Juan Islands on the Canadian border, here in Wa State. Thank for sharing.
Thanks Phil, Actually it's off of Lake Erie, which often has a negative stereotype (completely unfair in my opinion. It is a unique lighthouse. the only one every lit by a naturally occurring natural gas fissure. Thanks again for the compliments. Chris
Fascinating! Lighthouses are a thing of the past in this part of the world. Most of them are unmanned and others are empty but generally kept in good repair. With satellite navigation
etc the lighthouse has outlived its usefulness - at least until all the satellites collide and the light house makes a come-back! I heard a joke about the lighthouse keeper who ran too fast up the spiral staircase and screwed himself into the roof. Can this be true?
Thanks, I think lighthouses are a link to the past in a way they help me get my personal bearings much as they must have for seafarers years back. I doubt satellites , and global positioning systems will have as much charm once they've outlived their usefulness. The spiral staircases make you feel like you could screw yourself into the roof.
Yes, indeed. There is surely something mystical about the lighthouse. The 'candle in the window' as it were leading sailors and their cargoes of men and goods through the treacherous rocks, reefs and banks of the deep oceans, taking the seafarer 'by the hand' and guiding him home and to safety. And if the lighthouse could speak would it not say "Go carefully, dear traveller, on your onward journey home to rest and peace and when you arrive at your destination, won't you please remember me..?"

It's truly a quaint Lighthouse just off the Highway 5 hid away in Westfield NY. Thanks for checking it out, and your warm comments.

Thanks a lot. It's a really beautiful lighthouse, it comes up for sale from time to time but it's out of our price range. Too bad.

Westfield and Barcelona are in Chautauqua County, near the Chautauqua Institute, and around great Wine country.
