'Oh honey Picture me upon your knee, With tea for two and two for tea, Just me for you and you for me, alone! Nobody near us, to see us or hear us, No friends or relations on weekend vacations We won't have it known, dear, That we own a telephone, dear. Day will break and I'm gonna wake and start to bake a sugar cake for you to take for all the boys to see. We will raise a family, a boy for you , and a girl for me, Can't you see how happy we will be.'
As a Monterey local I think I'll have to take some time one afternoon to take tea (for two) at the Cypress Inn. I've never done it, but it's supposed to be an awesome experience. And you just never know who might wander through! Thanks for posting this wonderful rendition.
@njezan1 "best version of this classic song" hmmmm... have you heard Jane Monheit's version of it yet? You can find it on youtube... it's smokey and lush... I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.... : )
this song reminds me of the good things in life .... garfinorbit says the music as good has died ... but we will always have songs like this. socialism, communism and anarchism are pushing back to society ... valuesare losing their fault .... Spain Live! LONG LIVE THE KING!
Doris is surely everyboy's cup of tea. She's everything that epitomises 'niceness' in music and song. Qualities that are very rare these days unfortunately.
Doris is an icon. She is the epitamy of joy, family and love. A delight in every possible way. I could never tire of her eternal beauty and what all she gave to the world.
Picture me upon your knee With tea for two And two for tea Just me for you And you for me alone Nobody near us to see us or hear us, No friends or relations On weekend vacations, We won't have it known, dear, That we own a telephone, dear... i love, love, love this song! i love doris day, she's amazing. the movie is pretty good too (tea for two). I wish i could time travel back to this era, i love their music/films. (i'm 14)
I love this song. First time I heard it from movie Grey Gardens with Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange in it. I feel that I know this song all along. Just heard it once and I know the tune. Maybe I am an old soul.
its music like this. that makes me want to live. i am 53, this music was america, before -drugs- and the 60s. when nobody locked there doors. and the sailor in times sq, kissing that lady. thats the america i missed. but this music, makes me think, tea for two and you and me.
@peteboy1113 I truly wish I knew about the things you write of. I know that picture you're talking about and it is one of my favourite pictures of all time. This is pure bliss - Doris Day - BEAUTIFUL!
@peteboy1113 hey to burst your bubble, you don't recall Coca Cola with actual cocaine in it, drugs, booze, etc have always been around. It's so lame to keep blaming the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's etc, for DRUGS. People did opium, hash, cocaine, drank like bums for centuries.
@ThePandems - oh really . so did catholics, but you know what, jessie the jack ass jackson and al not so sharp sharpton. and all the black leaders, cant make any money off that story. and you know it. and also not that you care, harry truman picked hiroshima, and nagasakki to drop the bomb. because it was the 2 biggest catholic citys in japan, he hated us more then blacks. a 33rd degree mason. hated catholics, and that mr pandems is a true story. so you jessie and al, can go to hell.
@peteboy1113 Wow so back then Americans did had to lock the doors from Blacks to Catholics. Just made you put your foot in your mouth about "this music was america, before -drugs- and the 60s. when nobody locked there doors. " NOBODY LOCKED THEIR DOORS? Ha, you just proved that wrong.
@peteboy1113 It may have been a "swell" time for Caucasians, but the other races in the country were not having such a grand time. Perhaps you like it because it reminds you of your Tea Party?
@peteboy1113 What I like best are the lyrics: "We will raise a family. A boy for you and a girl for me."
Prefreudian world when everything was as it should be... and we didn't have to listen to some mambo-jambo: Electra complex this and Oedipus complex that.
@peteboy1113 I am really attracted to that era....the 40's and 50's...im 17, and can think of bands, cars, appliances, history, its a great time period, nothing like it what-so-ever
@shinusha I'm 17 too, and I'm in love with many of the lovely MGM musicals of the '30s and '40s. I'm also very interested in vaudeville, and very early film. I'm glad there are others my age who DO appreciate that wonderful era!
What a cute fantasy land. This picture perfect, nuclear family, picket fence was quite the illusion back in the day, during rampant Post WW2 Political Corruption, The brewing Cold War, rediculous amounts of black/jewish racism. This is great music, but I think a lot of you oldies lovin' seniors are romanticizing the times quite a bit.
Mannnn, you hit it on the head, I still remember the little radio that took forever to warm up and it's monotone sound that seemed to flow so smoothly on to front porch, Please Please don't eat the Daises
@peteboy1113 You might enjoy my MANOUCHE SWING clips on YouTube. Django Reinhardt's family own a place in the Saint-Ouen flea markets, and there are marvelous jam sessions there for free, you just buy a beverage and they pass the hat. Type this, BRUCE DAVID THORPE and LISA FALOUR and see, it is different, but it swings! I sing there sometimes and they always want to hear an American do TWO FOR TEA. I try to oblige! xo
@peteboy1113 ah oui, when it was still outlawed that chinese people come to this country, when blacks had no civil rights, when other minority groups were by law discriminated against
@peteboy1113 i am european, but the america you talk about is the America we all dreamt of and loved. The America that went away... when in Europe we are talking bad about America, it does not mean we hate it, or even dislike it. We simply miss it...

By far the best version of this classic song. The male choir is magical, pity that they didn't sing on other Doris's songs.
The song purifies one's soul and makes him a better person.
