I used to hear these occasionally when I was a teenager. There was always something very majestic about them. I often wondered why there was a pause after the initial burst of noise, then it would start bellowing again.
@maywemaywe -it previously carried identities like D1630 then 47048 and 47570. It was meant to have been converted to a Class 57 but was rejected following discovery of serious structural defects some 30 years after its horrific accident.
Back in 1972 this locomotive was smashed up at Eltham. It was working an excursion, the driver had been knocking back alcohol as he was driving and he then took a 20mph bend at 80mph. He killed 4 passengers as well as himself.
