To agree with octothorp's comment, this song was about motivation. What are the giants or Golliath's in your life? If a midget, like David can stand up and fight Golliath, we have to follow suit, fight for the things that are yours rightfully. If it's unemployment, sexism, racism, or even depression, whatever your giant is, stand up, face it, then fight! Go Sly, this goes to show you that 42yrs later, you are still relevant :).
This is a message song as well as a song of hope and faith, not of better times but of what we already have at hand. This song is always a boost to me when I start feeling defeated by the powers that be, and in today’s world that happens quite often. As the middle class sinks into poverty and the already downtrodden seem to be disappearing it’s important to remember how to stand, individually and collectively. Sly Stone wove wonderful images with his lyrics. Always remember...STAND!
