@kenim ye flat 4 cylinders most cars are straight 4s like the evo thats why subarus have there own noise due to the flat 4 cylinder layout, the pistons on a normal car go up and down were on a subaru there layed on their side.

@m3ganecoup3z It's not the layout of the cylinders that make that distinctive noise it's the uneven headers. Other cars use the boxer engine (Porsche for example) and they don't have the same sound, so it's the headers.

@timorbit no it has a huge impact actually. tell me why an RB engine sounds different than a 1J or 2JZ, or a ford modular V8 sounds different from a chevy V8. Its all about comb.chamber position. VR6's have a unique sound, and so do the VQ35/37's as well. You can take a stock exhaust off and throw a full aftermarket one on, and it'll change the note for sure and bring out what the engine really sounds like because of a less restrictive exhaust and more flow from the engine

@04mustangsvtcobra Chamber position has not impact on sound. Bottom line is there is an explosion in a chamber which doesn't sound differently depending on if you flip it upside down or not. Of course those engines are going to sound different, they have different exhaust, headers, blocks, heads, etc. It's HOW the explosion sound gets outside the engine that alters the noise and the different types of restriction for the waves to bounce off, not the position that the explosion is in.

@04mustangsvtcobra For example, with an STI the headers are separated to two cylinders on each side of the block and then combine to one. Obviously this is going to impact the sound coming out over an inline 4 cylinder when all the exhaust sounds are on the same side next to each other. Air/fuel doesn't recognize that the engine is flat and suddenly make a difference noise when it burns. Again, it's how that noise comes out of the engine that makes all the difference.
