  • Like a country girl who comes to a town and eats in an expensive restaurant

  • Mary Tyler Moore should won that year. Snubbed

  • Mary Tyler Moore should win that year. Snubbed

  • lol Studder studder!

  • Hoffman always drones ON AND ON on awards shows! UUGGHHH!!!

  • I think it should have been a tie between Sissy & Mary Tyler Moore!!!!

  • Mary Tyler Moore should have won

  • I think Mary Tyler Moore should've won :)

  • Sissy Spacek's speech was perfect. That's the way a oscar winning speech should be.

  • Dustin Hoffman bugs in these old Oscar clips. He seemed to take himself way too seriously in those days. These days he has more of a sense of humor about things.

  • OMG Carrie !

  • please dustin move quickly. LoL

  • Whoa he is sort of off....lol

  • At this moment I thought her name was an homage. to the princess of Austro-Hungarian Empire.

  • @ 3:01, Sissy is so adorable. Dustin Hoffman announces her name and she claps, then she gets this look on her face that's like "Wait, am I supposed to clap for myself?" I think Sissy is such a kind, genuine person. Ditto for Loretta Lynn! I bet they had a lot of fun making their film. Oh, and I also like how the FIRST PERSON who Sissy thanks is Loretta Lynn, which is as it should be. Unlike Julia Roberts, who forgot to thank Erin Brokovich entirely.

  • I'd never dare make fun of her on stage. I've seen what happens.

  • As a courtesy skip Hoffman's ranting and go to 1:33

  • Shit, the camera crew really fucked it up that year. What is up with the zooming after Sissy is announced as the winner.

In the same year (Hutton's win) they mistook one of the nominees for Martin Scorsese!

  • I LOVE SISSY !!!

  • I once watched her and Nick Nolte film a scene together. The story and clips is at "My Life in San Francisco (1989) pt 2".

  • As much as I like Sissy, I think Mary should have won. No one has ever played a cold bitch better. Even her body language was perfect.

  • She deserve it!!!

  • that was only 1 min 30 sec?? omg get to the nominees!

  • Early Reese Witherspoon. But better...

  • Dustin has said that even to this day he gets very bad stage fright when presenting or making speeches.

  • Dustin was too long and wordy here.

  • Burstyn, Spacek, Tyler Moore, and Rowlands. Amazing line up.

  • Ellen Burstyn deserved it way more

  • Ok, dont pour pigs blood on her like at the senior prom!

  • That was a heck of a year for female perfomances, all of them were amazing.

  • i love sissy and loretta

  • i love her

  • i just cant stop picturing what could have happend if someone would have spilled blood over her... :)

  • Dustin Hoffman is the worst actor i've ever seen in film, but to hear him talk while not acting, is proof he's an even bigger waste of time to see in person. But not to make this about him, Sissy Spacek deserved this oscar and im so glad she won it. What a gracious girl and so talented. Maybe Dustin should grow a pair, appologize to Meryl Streep and work with Sissy and her in a movie. Maybe he'd be recognized again

  • if you want to skip dustin start at 1:33

  • I remember watching this particular Oscars presentation like it just happened. The Academy sure did their job by selecting Sissy as Best Female of 1980 for Coal Miner's Daughter. She did her research for at least a year before production began.

  • Lol at Dustin.

  • Poor nominees. I bet that while Dustin Hoffman (whom BTW I love as an actor) was talking for hours, the nominees thought SHUT THE F@CK UP! SAY THE WINNER!

  • I love Sissy. I also thought Mary Tyler Moore's performance was brilliant and I thought she would've won. But Sissy is also fantastic so I'm glad she won.

  • I get my boxer shorts at k-mart!!!

  • dustin..the oscar is not for you....

  • I like this.

  • I'm so glad they didn't dump pig's blood on her when she accepted the award.

  • @MindBloodandDark LMAO ;))) i was thinking the same thing

  • @MindBloodandDark i was thinking the same thing :)

  • @MindBloodandDark haha that was a good one xD

  • @MindBloodandDark That really would of been a nice touch tho

  • aww it should have been a tie with sissy & gene

  • She should of won an Oscar for Carrie.

  • Fucking douche, shut up Dustin! You ain't their fucken dad. Give the oscar already.

  • Sissy's win was definitely one of the best choices by the AMPAS for this category. Her Loretta Lynn was truly astounding, and not merely an imitation: it was a reinterpretation, bringing Spacek's nuances to Lynn's music. Besides the singing, she also acted brilliantly.

  • Sissy was superb in the film. I believe she sang her own songs. BUT....Gena Rowlands was a tour de force as Gloria.

  • I love Mary Tyler Moore!

  • I love her, she is so nice and a great actress!

  • Personally, I preferred Gena Rowlands. Gloria was not so much of a great film, but her performance makes the two hours worth it. I've never seen such a tough actress before.

And Goldie Hawn in "Private Benjamin?" Are you kidding me. Aside from being a horrible movie, her performance in the title role was nothing special.

  • so sweet an acceptance and one of the greatest performances on film....period.

  • Comment removed

  • I loved that movie i love Sissy, Dustin needs to learn he is there to give the award not get one, he is much to slow and takes to much time

  • Sissy was so sexy in her day...and she has not changed a bit. I loved her in Carrie and Badlands.

  • wow this was back in the day

  • Let's just thank God nobody dropped pig's blood on her whilst she gave the speech, other wise a fire might start

  • @tas7010 hahahaha

  • This had to be one of the closest races of all time, but I would have voted for Mary

Tyler Moore in ORDINARY PEOPLE. She played a very difficult role totally

against type, and knocked it right out of the ballpark.

  • sissy deserved that award more than any other but even ABOVE her performance was tommy lee jones for portraying doolittle lynn he was amazing!!!!!!!!!

  • "I started working on Coal Miner's Daughter with a bunch of strangers, and I finished working on Coal Miner's Daughter with a bunch of friends." :) That's so sweet. ♥

  • STFU. 90 seconds of you blathering on? And peoplw wonder why I hate DH.

  • Sissy was also awesome in Carrie

  • should have gone to Mary Tyler Moore

  • @Hellzyead no way!moore was more like a supporting role !

  • Sissy, Sandra Bullock, Vivian Leigh (twice), Susan Sarandon, and whomever else I am forgetting right now all portrayed southern belles when they won their awards. Viv, won 4 playing belles twice! Coincidence?

  • Ellen Burstyn and Gena Rowlands were my favourite...can't believe the later never got one :(

  • @yairc19 ellen should've got it for requiem for a dream...instead they gave it to helen hunt....

  • @akadaka69 Worse. They gave it to Julia Roberts

  • Interesting that she didn't thank Levon Helm, who played her father. I typically don't analyze who people do and do not thank in their acceptance speeches, but since she named a bunch of people, it seemed odd to leave him out. Regardless, her portrayal is one of my all-time favorites and she SO deserved this award.

  • hey dustin. SHUT THE FUCK UP !! MY GOD !!!!

  • did you see the beging Dustin almost forgot his lines haha i love bloopers!

  • I don't know why Mary was in best actress category when her role was clearly a supporting role. Never seen Cole Miner's daughter, but I know Sissy is a great actress. But my goodness, Dustin Hoffman! I thought that man was going to talk forever and ever. I like him, but that was one loooong intro into nominees of Best Actress Category.

  • Booo to Dustin's boring rambling.

  • Way to gooo Sissy! About time! You shouldve gotten 1 for Carrie!!!

  • ramble ramble ramble Dustin!! Lord... Anyways Sissy is EVERYTHING! ALL talent. MTM looks super p*ssed lol and sports the fakest smile after she didnt hear her name as the winner.

  • Thank you for posting this!!! I love love love Sissy Spacek and I watch CMD every weekend it airs on TV Guide Network, literally! Shouts out to Goldie Hawn who looked absolutely adorable in the audience.:)

  • damn Hoffmans a long winded bastard

  • It was a foregone conclusion that Sissy would win! She won every other preliminary award that year and is the only actress in history to win the coveted "New York Film Critic's Award" four times!! Not even Meryl Streep or Katharine Hepburn has done that. Sissy Spacek was above all the rest that year. Mary Tyler Moore was good but it was more like a supporting character. The movie "Ordinary People" was clearly about the son. The other actresses were great but none stood a chance with Sissy.

  • @larkpraise I so agree with you about ORDINARY PEOPLE. Strange Timothy Hutton won for Supporting Actor even though the movie was mainly about him, though truth be told he didn't stand a chance against Robert DeNiro in RAGING BULL. But Mary Tyler Moore was clearly Supporting. As good as Mary was, Sissy was in practically every frame of COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER, thus making her the best Leading Actress of that year. And she was excellent to boot.

  • She's got a slight twang in her voice.

  • Amazing win and she should've won for "In The Bedroom" as well.

  • i have an obsession with sissy ever since i watched Carrie back in 2004,

  • @artemiscarrington Me, too! Though I first watched "Carrie" probably around 1982 or something. IMO, it is the best performance ever given.

  • as the running gag in "Holy Grail" went: "GET ON WITH IT!"

  • I love how she always wears her hair in a messy bun. Sissy is so awesome.

  • Watch above your head,carrie!

  • @sportspiano If one person dares to laugh, they're all FUCKED!!!!! LOL

  • MTM was pissed--watch her face as Sissy's name is called out, then twisted into a fake smile.

  • Loved Sissy in this film! She's a great actress.

  • These actresses are probably thinking - SHUT THE F UP and read the names .

  • @Gunnarsas I think everyone was thinking that

  • Sissy is so stylish and timeless.

  • Dustin is always drunk at the Oscars.

  • isn't she the one who played in carrie?

  • @TheKonmar yes she is.

  • wake me when Dustin stops talking

  • 2:59 ... I love her for this! :)

  • Oh, shut up, Dustin. I've never seen someone take himself so seriously. His speech a year prior was also pedantic and self-righteous.

  • 4:33

  • She did Great in Coal Miners Daughter and deserved that Award but Tommy Lee Jones deserved something to. I Love You Loretta Honey All 50 Years Of You.

  • is dustin drunk?

    i love sissy....shes such a sweetheart

  • She SOOOO fucikin knew she was gonna win that.

  • Incredible lineup of actresses.

  • I love Sissy's outfit!

  • when i look back at all these movies at the time and the actresses selected sissy spacek blew them away...she showed a very human and innocent way of things in her chracter...hawn to me is what aniston is today (plays air heads) ellen burstyn to me is just scary and cold....the others are easily forgoitten when you look back over 30 years coal minners daughter was then and still is a solid movie about music, self worth, and finding yourself which are things at 37 im still trying to figure out!

  • @sprintbass I totally agree with your comment @ Sissy Spacek. She's always had this innocence about her. Probably why her Carrie White is so sympathetic. But you say Ellen Burstyn is "scary and cold"??? Ellen Burstyn radiated goodness and warmth in "Resurrection". Are you sure you didn't mean Mary Tyler Moore, who is ice-cold scary as the unloving, unforgiving mother in "Ordinary People"?

  • A strong year, yes a deserved win, I think she sang her own songs? Personally I preferred Gena Rownalds in GLORIA. My word, doesn't Dustin ramble on and on and on and fluff his lines!!!

  • she playd in carrie.

  • Pls excuse me if I missed it, but doesn't it seem odd that she didn't thank Levon Helm with all of the other cast members in her speech? He played the father and in the beginning of the movie, he casts a long shadow. Hmm.

Anyway, I love Sissy and was so excited she won here.

  • WHO IS THAT LONG WINDED BASTARD?

    ROFL!!!

  • she deserved this award so much!

  • Oscar®Oscars's Channel deleted their Michael Moore speech. What's worse? the government censorship Or corporate sponsor censorship?

  • I love her, she is just astounding!!!! great great performance!!!!

  • She's still as pretty as she was in Carrie

  • I LOVE these fucking movies

  • Ellen Burstyn kinda looks like Diane Keaton here

  • she has a pretty nose^^

  • Sissy transformed into Loretta Lynn. She deserved her Oscar.

  • I would have voted for Mary Tyler Moore. She is such a nice sweet woman and her performance as that sick mother was something else.

  • I expected a long time, maybe mora than 10 yeas, for watching this momento. Awsome, Sissy is the best ands she must´ve won for her performance iin In the bedroom!!!!!

  • Amazing year!!! Both leading actors (De Niro-Spacek) won for portraying real people; and both persons (Jek La Motta-Loretta Lynn) were attending the ceremony to share the win. Great!!!

  • Out of all the people that year Ms. Sissy Spacek REALLY did deserve that. I love that movie I've watched it over 100 times. Thanks for posting this!

  • Three minutes and 14 seconds just to present the nominees...

  • Way to go Sissy!

  • Ellen Burstyn should have won for Resurrection but it was a very low budget movie

  • @goolagong68

I disagree. Although I enjoy Ellen's films, etc., I firmly agree that Sissy was the best one to earn the Oscar for 1980. Both actors are phenomenal and deserve all awards that they have earned.

  • @4aiiii totally agree. it's a shame more people don't know more about ellen burstyn's performance in resurrection, it's really phenomenal.

  • @ooks she should've won for Requiem For A Dream too!! Her performance it's breathtaking in that movie and 100 times better than Julia Roberts. Sadly, that was Julia's year, her last chance to get an Oscar IMO. If they didn't awarded her for Erin Brockovich she would've remain Oscarless for a life time and Ellen already had an Oscar.

  • WoooHooo SISSY!

  • @4aiiii

She had already won six years earlier, so the academy wanted to be generous.

  • @KOHF34 no she hadnt won six years earlier!

  • goolagong68 no, KOHF34 is right, Ellen Burstyn had indeed won 6 years previously (1975) for ALICE DOESN'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE.

  • did anyone let dustin hoffman know this wasn't rain man?!?!?!

  • Sissy is so adorable.glad she won

  • Superb actress.

  • He mispronounced Gena Rowlands name.

  • Love you, Sissy!

  • Dustin Hoffman looks completely hammered and like he just doesn't give a shit. To be honest, I totally respect him for that.

  • @Adrianics4k I dont' like the words he said. I hope he didn't write that. Makes him look like an ass. lol.

  • I love ya Sissy!!!!

  • Oh Thankyou so very much - I've always wanted to see when Sissy won her oscar and now I have so thankyou. She should have got one for Carrie as well. She looks beautiful here but I just wish she'd let her fucking hair down as she looks even hornier that way!!!!

  • Spacek is one of our greatest American actresses. Dustin Hoffman seems like he took himself too seriously in those days. Those rumors about him being difficult back then don't surprise me.

  • I love Sissy Spacek, but I preferred gritty Gena Rowlands that year, or even Mary Tyler Moore for her superb turn as the flawed Beth in "Ordinary People". Might be due to the fact that the world of Loretta Lynn is completely alien to win. Sissy is amazing anyway. Oh, and shut up, Dustin.

  • @zim83 The film came out earlier that year - the film was also a huge box office success - critics also loved the movie and she won every critic movie award before. That is why she won the oscar and she deserved it.

  • @zim83 I obviously meant completely alien to "ME", not "to win".

  • she's the queen! so lovely! and what a performance...

  • Oh for goodness sake - I do like you Dustin - but you do go on and on and on.........

  • @myrnaloysboy yeah that was a long time ago. its always good to generalise

  • OMG - Dustin Hoffman makes me want to slit my wrists.

  • Loretta Lynn attended the ceremony! Wow. Must be overwhelming night for her as well.

I like the film, if not slightly too long on its duration. Tommy Lee Jones gives a subtle performance that goes underrated, as compared to the towering presence of Sissy Spacek in the role catered and suited for her.

  • That was a good movie. Loretta Lynn is a fascinating person.

  • I love how she started clapping herself and then went "Oooh!"..giggled..and stopped...!!

  • amazing line-up. all brilliant. hawn, moore and burstyn in a close third to rowlands close second but spacek was tops here.

  • awww Look at Goldie Hawn. She's so cute and Kate looks just like her mom!

  • Mr. Hoffman is just a tad drunk.

  • Sissy should have also won a 2nd Oscar for "In The Bedroom"

  • Wow, if they told Dustin Hoffman to say that....I don't even have words. That was horrible.

  • So very well deserved! Ms. Spacek put her heart and soul into playing the great Loretta Lynn.

  • Hoffman is wrong about the studio system. Many actors from the golden age will be rememberd long after the actors of today because the studio bosses back then knew their business

  • I think she deserved it. But Mary Tyler Moore was also great.

  • He was too nervous.

  • Gena Rowland and Mary Tyler Moore, were great also.

  • sissy is the best! Soo classy and a an amazing actress (but in imo pretty underated overall). Oh, and Mary Tyler Moore did not look thrilled with the result lol. Yes she smiled and didnt roll her eyes or whatever, but her face looked tense when they announced she didnt win.

  • she deserved it.

  • thank u so much for posting this ive always wanted to see sissy spacek win love her she was perfect as loretta lynn
