It is pretty clear the non-aggression pact Stalin made was an effort to buy time after he had seriously purged his army's officer corps. They didn't stop the War, they fought Germany (not because they were mad) but because Germany invaded Russia with 3-Million men. It is true that if Germany had not attacked Russia, nazi Germany may never have been defeated, at least by conventional weapons.

The Russians had their best because none of them were good enough to still be in the stanley cup playoffs. And the Olympics is the same, and Canada won this summit series in '72 and the latest Olympics in Vancouver. Russia did beat Canada in 1974, the series in 72, Canada was the better team, the games that Russia won were from a combination of poor officiating, over confidence on Canada's part and no conditioning. Team Canada's players hadn't played together and were coming of their summer vacation and were in poor condition. Russians did earn respect after this series, I may be biased but I still think Canada has the best hockey with Russia a close second.

The forward line of Ron Ellis, Paul Henderson & Bobby Clarke showed their ability consistently through the entire series. Clarke was a key element during that tournament and played some of his best hockey ever. That's his style true grit and Canada needed that style against those pink-o comi's in 1972. I guess that's why they were voted the Team of the Century. That was our finest hour boy's well done!!

The soviets did the same things during that series. Both teams were just as dirty as each other. I wasn't there in 1972 to watch it, but I do own the series and watched it many times.  I won't even go into details on what the soviets did. But, I will remind you one thing. Off-ice things done to the canadians by Soviets. But, they didn't really do that since they were angels - And Canada were the devils. On-ice both teams were just as dirty, go watch the games again old man.
