Hey everybody! I have released my new album 'Progenitor' which is electronic music inspired by great games such as Neverwinter Nights. You can check it out and download it for free on my youtube channel if you're interested!
GoG's better. $10 US (worldwide, I might add, so whatever currency you use gets converted) gets you the Diamond Edition with no DRM as well as lots of other goodies. Plus you're supporting a company that's bringing back the classics.
@DWTerminator Maybe you should do a bit of research - GoG's Neverwinter Nights doesn't really allow online play, unless somebody doesn't play on the same server as you. GoG is bad, because everybody has the exact same CD Key.
@DWTerminator Incorrect - I found out last night, that if you have the same key as someone else, you CANNOT play on the same server as them, unless you do a bit of loopholing.
The way GoG does it is they provide a "default" key for installation purposes (basically to get around the key check at the beginning), and should you wish to play online you simply have to request a unique key from them. Regardless, there's not that big a chance of running into someone with the same CD-key as you (higher now than it used to be thanks to the NWN player base being so small these days, but still).
what i hated about this game was "ha i hit him, no i walk to the side, look what he is doing for 5 seconds and .. oh damn he hit me, didnt see that one coming"-fighting system
Yeah, combat's certainly no Baldur's Gate or Icewind Dale. I dunno why they opted for the really awkward, slow animations. Game's still very playable regardless.
man, i changed my class into sorcerer and man was it alot more difficult than when i was a fighter. Now u got to plan ahead and think, but with a fighter u just charge in and attack.
@DWTerminator but its a lot more fun being a sorcerer than a fighter. I was getting annoyed with the hack and slash fighter class from chp 1 and 2. In chp 3 i change my character to sorcerer, i used a little cheat just to only adjust the lvl of my character to make things fair.
In general it's considered more rewarding to do awesome things with a spellcaster than it is to do them with, say, a fighter due to the difficulty involved. After all, if your spells fail, you're doomed, since spellcasters have horrendous combat abilities.
As for changing characters in the middle of the OC... it's amusing to think that you can jump in with any character at any time and the game will act like your character's been there the entire time.
Guys, maybe i've said it once. When you updated te game to version 1.69 and you can't make a blackguard anymore, here is how to do it: by the Neutral or Chaotic Evil alignment, make that your hide-skill is 6 or 7 ranks. Then you can make the blackguard. I hope that it will help.
This game loses framerates down to single digit if you upgrade to a 400/500 series Geforce card. If you have that problem, a temporary fix is to use a download wrapper, it will bring your FPS back up to 60~. It is an issue with transparencies I believe.
@DWTerminator i beat chp 1, but after that im getting a bit tired of it and a little annoyed. Just had a glitch with tomi, would open locks or disarm traps, and there's very limited weapons.
@DWTerminator i beat chp 1, but after that im getting a bit tired of it and a little annoyed. Just had a glitch with tomi, wouldnt open locks or disarm traps, and there's very limited weapons.
Hey DW, its me, who said this game looks garbage lol. I tried it and its very addicting, hey can u recommend me a list of similar games to it. But I dont want anything similar to elder scrolls which was very irritating game. I want something that is straight forward like this game. thx
Anyway, try Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, Icewind Dale 1 & 2, and Neverwinter Nights 2 if you want the closest to NWN. Another one that's similar is Planescape: Torment, though it's VERY heavy on the dialogue and story and has almost no emphasis on combat so you might think it's boring. If you're willing to branch out into non-D&D, I recommend the 2 Drakensang games as well.
Well that's all I can think of off the top of my head that are very similar to NWN. If you want more party-based stuff that's not really the same, check out Arcanum, Fallout 1 & 2, the Wizardry series, Might & Magic 1-9, and the Ultima series. Just don't expect them to be remotely forgiving.
@DWTerminator just beat chp 1, but getting tired and a little annoyed. Just had a glitch with tomi who wouldn't disarm traps and unlock. Also there is a very limited amount of weapons and armor. I think it would've been cooler to edit ur equipment color since im seeing alot of the same equipment with different colors, but i dont want to sell my previous just becuz of color.
As much as I love Baldurs Gate 2, I could never get into NWN and I have tried several times. Character creation and all that RPG stuff is great but GAME IS JUST SO BORING TO PLAY. I have played as far as second chapter and it didnt get better there so I just quit.
Well, NWN isn't really the same kind of RPG as BG2. It's more reminiscent of the older dungeon crawlers than the heavily story-driven Baldur's Gate style (considering it's a "remake" of the original online game of the same name, that makes sense). Story takes a backseat to the gameplay as a result. Perhaps that's the problem?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i dont know y ppl like these type of games. theres just too much to do. (hmm, probably these games r for losers who has nothing to do with their time)
@DWTerminator I've been playing the main campaign with a buddy of mine once a week for a few ours--we are coming up on about 2 years now I believe, we're still not done with the main story LOL
@DWTerminator Great review, again. IMO Bioware needs to stop giving sequels to Obsidian. First NWN 2, then KOTOR 2... I just hope that Mass Effect 3 turns out right.
NWN2 and KotOR2 weren't bad games. They were just obviously unfinished and suffered for it (despite still being fun and generally well-designed). Obsidian's got talent in there, but they're just never given enough time by the publishers. Also, ME3 is made by BioWare, not Obsidian, if that's what you were thinking.
when I play the game the prelude like when its telling he story it has all the music and and peoples voices but when I play the game it doesn't have the voice over well actually no sound at all could anybody help please
They're both D&D games, both are made by BioWare, and both are set in Forgotten Realms. Apart from that, they play quite a bit differently. BG is much more traditional of a party-based RPG, while NWN has much less emphasis on the party.
and a 170cm tall person could see one sword as a 2-handed lonsword, while a 190cm person could see at as a bastard sword and a 210cm person could see it as an arming :D... and what would be a greatsword for the 190 guy could be simply a 2-handed lonsword for the 210 guy ... hmm maybe they should classify swords in accordance with the proportion wielder/sword size ... hehe, but that's on a side note :D : )
They do actually classify according to size. Giants wield greatswords with one hand, for instance, while everything except halflings and gnomes (who can't use greatswords at all because they're too short). wields them with 2 hands.
Well, in real life they're classified according to length, edge (single or double), curvature of the blade, origin, and usage. It's probably more precise to do it this way than according to wielder size.
i see how the meaning of "longsword" would change from meaning a longer sword than the predominantly short swords which were called simply "sword" at that time. and then again change to mean a yet longer sword. but there are longswords that are best wielded with 2 hands and can occasionally be swung with one but are not long enough to be a greatsword, which could sometimes be best wielded with 3 hands if possible :D ... but yeah i see ur point, it's a matter of classification
decent game but it has a lot of problems in it,it's a fantasy rpg but they should have at least been accurate about existing weapons.longsword is 2handed!the ranger should have been able to also disable traps.the bastard sword should have a slight penalty to attack when used with a shield, xbows r messed up,party system sux. heavy xbows should have a min str to use and a bonus against heavy armor.and seriously a penalty to accuracy at close range?! a bit shallow story and characters.(cont)
@pipobun (cont)there is nothing u could do to influence the outcome u just hack away(a hack'n'slash undercover). there are alignment problems.why should a paladin always be good?! rapid reload shold be only for xbows and rapid shot only for bows and slings. many items are way too heavy 15lbs for a greatsword?the heaviest were around 8lbs. and the game should have had item durability to even out the bias against ranged characters. But no doubt a revolutionary game with tromendous potential!!
Longswords are only two-handed if you're a halfling or a gnome... and the term really does refer to a straight double-edged sword of roughly 3 feet in length. Bastard swords aren't as clumsy as you make them out to be (they're pretty much slightly longer longswords). I dunno why ranged weapons have close range penalties (other than point-blank... which I can understand fully). Paladins have always been lawful good in D&D. It's only fairly recently that they've added in "evil" ones (Blackguards).
@DWTerminator i understand that but longswords are 2-handed even for humans(in reality). the size of swords from smaller to bigger is: short sword-arming sword-bastard sword-longsword-great sword... the bastard sword is actually the size between arming and longsword(between 1-handed and 2-handed) that is why it's called "a bastard" :D and it's not that it's a bad unwieldy weapon, on the contrary, it's just that it is a bit harder to control it with 1 hand than with 2 hands(cont)
I think you're a bit confused here. Longswords are generally considered 1-handed weapons. What you're thinking of are the late-medieval period longswords, which were phased into bastard swords, while the older style of longswords became arming swords. The bastard sword is the bridge between a longsword and a greatsword (eg. a German Zweihänder). In D&D, a longsword is essentially in its classical form, which in more modern terms would be an arming sword.
@DWTerminator oh, yes ... the blackguard , i forgot about that, sorry : ) .... but i still think it would be nice to have a neutral one : )
about ranged weapons they should have attack speed penalty instead of accuracy, i think that would be reasonable, since the fighter will have to move around and will have a harder time reloading, getting another arrow or bullet and finding an opportunity to shoot it ... hope that makes sense : )
There is a lot of good support info on getting this game to install and run correctly on the game's forum at GOG.com as well as links to valuable resources elsewhere. Have fun n good luck!
I have no idea what you're talking about. You can easily see each item's traits by examining it (if it's identified, of course... otherwise you need to get it identified first).
NwN1 is awesome thanks to the Aurora Toolkit and the ease of modding - the standard campaings are ok, but the real kick is playing online and/or try modules from the NwVault!
On top of that it's got rock-solid gameplay mechanics (as long as you're not being one of those annoying online "power gamers" who just uses the 1-hit-kill configurations), so that certainly helps.
Hey, i just got the Gold Edition, wich comes with shadows of the undrentide. Should i install the Xpack right away or play the original game before i do that?
And if you know anything else that might help me as a beginner to this game :)
@DWTerminator Thanks for the reply, though sadly enough the game does not work. Whenever i start it it shows the NWN Logo for a while, and then.... nothing happens.
love NWN. just started playing again like last week, still great servers online and oddly a good amount of players still. NWN2 sucks dont buy it play NWN1.
@DWTerminator No the game works perfectly, it's just the cinematics, and i am using an Nvidia graphics card GeForce 9500 GT. But my prcessor is 2.66 Ghz and it's single core! Is there a possibility that my graphics card is just that new that it doe not support the video format of this game, or that i use Windows 7?
Yeah it's possible that your GPU doesn't like the cutscenes, though it's more likely Bink video being stupid with Windows 7. Try downloading the latest version of Rad Game Tools.
@DWTerminator Ok, i tried it but it still doesn't work, yet the intro sequence plays jut fine. But whenever i launch the movie section the screen just remains what it was in the menu and all i hear is the sound from the movie.
First, try updating your GPU drivers, then if that doesn't help check the NWN tech support forums. I've only encountered this problem on other games (in NWN I had my sound cut out occasionally during cutscenes, but it never simply went to black screen with the sound), but it was usually a GPU issue.
Just got Diamond Edition, having played through the original and both expansions borrowed from a friend years ago.
This game is nearly perfect in my opinion. The D&D world of Faerun has a ton of background material and information, and it's all there, but it isn't required to enjoy the game. Just like other games from Bioware and planned original publisher Black Isle, the characters have real depth to them, too.
The story isn't quite up to par with the rest of BioWare's stuff. 'Course it's pretty hard to follow up something like Baldur's Gate with another epic D&D story in such a short time, after all. I felt like the characters were less developed and the story was more generic than most of what BioWare's done so far, but it's still good.
@DWTerminator how is morrowind in your opinion of being a rpg? i feel(i've only started playing it 2 days ago for the first time seriously) it feels more like an rpg then its sequel.
@DWTerminator Compared to most Western RPGs coming out today (ME, the Wticher series, etc.), it's actually quite in depth, but, even compared to Morrowind, it's way dumbed down. The majority of RPGs coming out today are actually Action RPGs, but they aren't properly displayed as such.
Clarification: Mass Effect and The Witcher are billed as action-RPG's to begin with. Hell, ME is billed as a third person shooter with RPG elements more than it is as just an RPG.
Here's the thing: there's nothing in Oblivion that really makes it more than an action game. The stat system is essentially pointless since you can do almost everything you could ever want to at level 1 with no regards to your skill set.
@DWTerminator What are you saying? RPG can only be an RPG if it has turn-based action instead of real time action? Or are you saying Oblivion has no good plot or dialogue? At least TES games are open world. I could say BioWare games are not really RPG's but adventure games because they are so linear (using the same logic).
@tontsa911 what the hell are you talking about????? Bioware's RPGs are true RPGs... look it up on wikipedia, type in RPG in google and see for yourself. I'm just saying...
@DaendyrProductions He said "Hell, Oblivion's really not even an RPG (just an open-world action game with stats)". IMO Bethesda games are the true RPG's. BioWare games are very linear and short but they are still damn good, they usually have better story.
@DWTerminator Huh? How is that? As far as I can see, Oblivion is still as much of a Role Playing Game as NVM... Actually, Oblivion has much better connection Player-Character than NVM...I think you missunderstand the meaning of RPG. Anyway, nice review. Take care
Oh really? Explain the "connection" then. You probably won't get very far. There's no sense of character development because the game's always too easy, making your character practically invincible from the onset. Your character is basically a mindless drone whose personality is nonexistent. Your decisions carry no weight in the game world apart from the storyline, and even then it's all a single, linear progression with no wiggle room, so you're not really deciding anything.
@DWTerminator NVM is a short of Neverwinter Nights, it's often used online.. Well, you got the point, but so is the character in NVM. You don't build any emotional connections with NPC you meet in games, their personality is shortened to expressing basic emtions. There are other RPG's where bound between your character and NPC is comparably strong to those in good movies.. I agree, Oblivion is not the best RPG, it lacks "personality" but so does NVM. I don't try to be offensive by the way.
I've never seen "NVM" used for Neverwinter Nights. I *always* see "NWN."
Anyway, Neverwinter Nights feels like you're caught up in this grand adventure to save Neverwinter from a plague. You'll experience a great many hardships as you struggle to survive, and will become tougher as a result. In Oblivion... you get caught up in a terribly written "Hell never does anything but is somehow a threat" storyline that you can completely avoid and have no trouble annihilating everything in your path.
@DWTerminator NwN is an awsome game. it is an entertaining blend of Rpg and Action-Rpg although i prefer being able to have complete control over a party of -at least- 4-5 characters. The soundtrack of this game is UNREAL.It is incredibly beautiful at times and varied enough. The graphics-animations were top notch when it first came out- i still like them. The quests are extremely well writen.Oblivion is boring- it is a bad copy of Morrowind which in my opinion is the best open world Rpg ever :)
@Morr1992 NVM? Seriously, where do you get that from? Unless it's from a different language, I could understand that this may be your own opinion of its proper abbreviation of this game.
BUT, in English, the abbreviation for Neverwinter Nights is either 'NWN' or 'NwN' - certainly not NVM.
@DWTerminator "You got the point, character in Oblivion may be a mindless drone, but so is character in NVM" Part of the sentence got lost in my post.
In NWN you're able to both choose an alignment *and* the way he/she converses with people. Depending on your choice of dialogue, your character can have a personality. In Oblivion... there's no opportunity for developing a personality at all.
Still, glad you liked the review anyway. I get highly irritated when people say Oblivion's an RPG, then ignore the fact that it's about as much of an RPG as Borderlands (which is to say "it's not but acts like it is").
@DaendyrProductions Well Oblivion is different than classical RPG's, but it's still an RPG... NvN, Dragon Age, Diablo 2, Gothic, Oblivion, they are all different but all of them sit under RPG category..
IN MY OPINION "RPG game " is a game where you take control over the role of a fictional character and shape his personality by making decisions and taking actions. Oblivion gives you lots of space for that.. You may not be able to manipulate the main storyline, but side quests make up for it
@DaendyrProductions The other thing I don't understand is why so many players get nostalgic about classic RPG's and bitch about new RPG's for no reason.. They are as good as the old ones if you give it a chance and take it for what it is.. It's like that argument Battlefield 3 vs COD MW3 which is pretty dumb.. Why people can't give a try both games.. Why there always has to be A vs B argument as if there would be million dollar award for guessing which game will get a bigger rate score.
It's stupid to say Oblivion's not an RPG when that's the reality? Next thing you know it'll be stupid to say the US government is so corrupt that it's useless.
let me know if you find something. message me or something man. fyi i talked with a guy i worked with he told me there still was a solid community and a bunch of servers up.. so im optimistic. still im trying to confirm this. if i dont get any keys soon im gonna buy it somewhere
The memories I've had with this game are uncountable. I bought it at release back when I was a teenager. Now I'm am an adult, living on my own and I still play this quite a bit.

BlatantDisobedience 6 months ago
The way GoG does it is they provide a "default" key for installation purposes (basically to get around the key check at the beginning), and should you wish to play online you simply have to request a unique key from them. Regardless, there's not that big a chance of running into someone with the same CD-key as you (higher now than it used to be thanks to the NWN player base being so small these days, but still).

what i hated about this game was "ha i hit him, no i walk to the side, look what he is doing for 5 seconds and .. oh damn he hit me, didnt see that one coming"-fighting system
strgaltdelete 7 months ago
Yeah, combat's certainly no Baldur's Gate or Icewind Dale. I dunno why they opted for the really awkward, slow animations. Game's still very playable regardless.

Baldur's Gate: Check. Icewind Dale: Check. Neverwinter Nights: ... I gotta buy this.

man, i changed my class into sorcerer and man was it alot more difficult than when i was a fighter. Now u got to plan ahead and think, but with a fighter u just charge in and attack.
Saladon89 8 months ago
Yep. D&D spellcasters are far more difficult to play than the other classes.
DWTerminator 8 months ago
@DWTerminator but its a lot more fun being a sorcerer than a fighter. I was getting annoyed with the hack and slash fighter class from chp 1 and 2. In chp 3 i change my character to sorcerer, i used a little cheat just to only adjust the lvl of my character to make things fair.
Saladon89 8 months ago

Hey DW, its me, who said this game looks garbage lol. I tried it and its very addicting, hey can u recommend me a list of similar games to it. But I dont want anything similar to elder scrolls which was very irritating game. I want something that is straight forward like this game. thx
Saladon89 8 months ago
Weird how that works, huh?
Anyway, try Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, Icewind Dale 1 & 2, and Neverwinter Nights 2 if you want the closest to NWN. Another one that's similar is Planescape: Torment, though it's VERY heavy on the dialogue and story and has almost no emphasis on combat so you might think it's boring. If you're willing to branch out into non-D&D, I recommend the 2 Drakensang games as well.
DWTerminator 8 months ago
@DWTerminator thx

@DWTerminator hey if u hav any more games in mind plz tell.
Saladon89 8 months ago
Well that's all I can think of off the top of my head that are very similar to NWN. If you want more party-based stuff that's not really the same, check out Arcanum, Fallout 1 & 2, the Wizardry series, Might & Magic 1-9, and the Ultima series. Just don't expect them to be remotely forgiving.
DWTerminator 8 months ago
@DWTerminator just beat chp 1, but getting tired and a little annoyed. Just had a glitch with tomi who wouldn't disarm traps and unlock. Also there is a very limited amount of weapons and armor. I think it would've been cooler to edit ur equipment color since im seeing alot of the same equipment with different colors, but i dont want to sell my previous just becuz of color.
Saladon89 8 months ago
I'm pretty sure you can fiddle with equipment color in Hordes of the Underdark. It's just in the OC and SoU that you can't.

As much as I love Baldurs Gate 2, I could never get into NWN and I have tried several times. Character creation and all that RPG stuff is great but GAME IS JUST SO BORING TO PLAY. I have played as far as second chapter and it didnt get better there so I just quit.
wotofl 8 months ago
Well, NWN isn't really the same kind of RPG as BG2. It's more reminiscent of the older dungeon crawlers than the heavily story-driven Baldur's Gate style (considering it's a "remake" of the original online game of the same name, that makes sense). Story takes a backseat to the gameplay as a result. Perhaps that's the problem?
DWTerminator 8 months ago

@DWTerminator Great review, again. IMO Bioware needs to stop giving sequels to Obsidian. First NWN 2, then KOTOR 2... I just hope that Mass Effect 3 turns out right.
Fuckacidglow 7 months ago
Glad you liked the review.

Cote58 10 months ago
They're both D&D games, both are made by BioWare, and both are set in Forgotten Realms. Apart from that, they play quite a bit differently. BG is much more traditional of a party-based RPG, while NWN has much less emphasis on the party.
DWTerminator 10 months ago
and a 170cm tall person could see one sword as a 2-handed lonsword, while a 190cm person could see at as a bastard sword and a 210cm person could see it as an arming :D... and what would be a greatsword for the 190 guy could be simply a 2-handed lonsword for the 210 guy ... hmm maybe they should classify swords in accordance with the proportion wielder/sword size ... hehe, but that's on a side note :D : )
pipobun 10 months ago
They do actually classify according to size. Giants wield greatswords with one hand, for instance, while everything except halflings and gnomes (who can't use greatswords at all because they're too short). wields them with 2 hands.
DWTerminator 10 months ago
@DWTerminator i know, i meant the classification in real life : )
pipobun 10 months ago
Well, in real life they're classified according to length, edge (single or double), curvature of the blade, origin, and usage. It's probably more precise to do it this way than according to wielder size.
DWTerminator 10 months ago
i see how the meaning of "longsword" would change from meaning a longer sword than the predominantly short swords which were called simply "sword" at that time. and then again change to mean a yet longer sword. but there are longswords that are best wielded with 2 hands and can occasionally be swung with one but are not long enough to be a greatsword, which could sometimes be best wielded with 3 hands if possible :D ... but yeah i see ur point, it's a matter of classification
pipobun 10 months ago
decent game but it has a lot of problems in it,it's a fantasy rpg but they should have at least been accurate about existing weapons.longsword is 2handed!the ranger should have been able to also disable traps.the bastard sword should have a slight penalty to attack when used with a shield, xbows r messed up,party system sux. heavy xbows should have a min str to use and a bonus against heavy armor.and seriously a penalty to accuracy at close range?! a bit shallow story and characters.(cont)
pipobun 10 months ago
@pipobun (cont)there is nothing u could do to influence the outcome u just hack away(a hack'n'slash undercover). there are alignment problems.why should a paladin always be good?! rapid reload shold be only for xbows and rapid shot only for bows and slings. many items are way too heavy 15lbs for a greatsword?the heaviest were around 8lbs. and the game should have had item durability to even out the bias against ranged characters. But no doubt a revolutionary game with tromendous potential!!
pipobun 10 months ago
@pipobun sadly that potential was not developed to it's fullest... : /
pipobun 10 months ago
Longswords are only two-handed if you're a halfling or a gnome... and the term really does refer to a straight double-edged sword of roughly 3 feet in length. Bastard swords aren't as clumsy as you make them out to be (they're pretty much slightly longer longswords). I dunno why ranged weapons have close range penalties (other than point-blank... which I can understand fully). Paladins have always been lawful good in D&D. It's only fairly recently that they've added in "evil" ones (Blackguards).
DWTerminator 10 months ago
@DWTerminator i understand that but longswords are 2-handed even for humans(in reality). the size of swords from smaller to bigger is: short sword-arming sword-bastard sword-longsword-great sword... the bastard sword is actually the size between arming and longsword(between 1-handed and 2-handed) that is why it's called "a bastard" :D and it's not that it's a bad unwieldy weapon, on the contrary, it's just that it is a bit harder to control it with 1 hand than with 2 hands(cont)
pipobun 10 months ago
I think you're a bit confused here. Longswords are generally considered 1-handed weapons. What you're thinking of are the late-medieval period longswords, which were phased into bastard swords, while the older style of longswords became arming swords. The bastard sword is the bridge between a longsword and a greatsword (eg. a German Zweihänder). In D&D, a longsword is essentially in its classical form, which in more modern terms would be an arming sword.
DWTerminator 10 months ago
@DWTerminator oh, yes ... the blackguard , i forgot about that, sorry : ) .... but i still think it would be nice to have a neutral one : )
about ranged weapons they should have attack speed penalty instead of accuracy, i think that would be reasonable, since the fighter will have to move around and will have a harder time reloading, getting another arrow or bullet and finding an opportunity to shoot it ... hope that makes sense : )
pipobun 10 months ago

DWTerminator 1 year ago
@DWTerminator No the game works perfectly, it's just the cinematics, and i am using an Nvidia graphics card GeForce 9500 GT. But my prcessor is 2.66 Ghz and it's single core! Is there a possibility that my graphics card is just that new that it doe not support the video format of this game, or that i use Windows 7?
MisterAAnderson 1 year ago
Yeah it's possible that your GPU doesn't like the cutscenes, though it's more likely Bink video being stupid with Windows 7. Try downloading the latest version of Rad Game Tools.
DWTerminator 1 year ago
@DWTerminator Ok, i tried it but it still doesn't work, yet the intro sequence plays jut fine. But whenever i launch the movie section the screen just remains what it was in the menu and all i hear is the sound from the movie.
MisterAAnderson 1 year ago
First, try updating your GPU drivers, then if that doesn't help check the NWN tech support forums. I've only encountered this problem on other games (in NWN I had my sound cut out occasionally during cutscenes, but it never simply went to black screen with the sound), but it was usually a GPU issue.
DWTerminator 1 year ago
Just got Diamond Edition, having played through the original and both expansions borrowed from a friend years ago.
This game is nearly perfect in my opinion. The D&D world of Faerun has a ton of background material and information, and it's all there, but it isn't required to enjoy the game. Just like other games from Bioware and planned original publisher Black Isle, the characters have real depth to them, too.
I love a game with a solid story to tell.
thatotherguy27 1 year ago
The story isn't quite up to par with the rest of BioWare's stuff. 'Course it's pretty hard to follow up something like Baldur's Gate with another epic D&D story in such a short time, after all. I felt like the characters were less developed and the story was more generic than most of what BioWare's done so far, but it's still good.

@DWTerminator how is morrowind in your opinion of being a rpg? i feel(i've only started playing it 2 days ago for the first time seriously) it feels more like an rpg then its sequel.
Loryuo 8 months ago
It's infinitely more of an RPG than Oblivion. Compared to, say, Neverwinter Nights and its ilk, however, it's a pretty simplistic one.
DWTerminator 8 months ago
@DWTerminator Compared to most Western RPGs coming out today (ME, the Wticher series, etc.), it's actually quite in depth, but, even compared to Morrowind, it's way dumbed down. The majority of RPGs coming out today are actually Action RPGs, but they aren't properly displayed as such.
FellToRise 8 months ago
Clarification: Mass Effect and The Witcher are billed as action-RPG's to begin with. Hell, ME is billed as a third person shooter with RPG elements more than it is as just an RPG.
Here's the thing: there's nothing in Oblivion that really makes it more than an action game. The stat system is essentially pointless since you can do almost everything you could ever want to at level 1 with no regards to your skill set.
DWTerminator 8 months ago

@DWTerminator What are you saying? RPG can only be an RPG if it has turn-based action instead of real time action? Or are you saying Oblivion has no good plot or dialogue? At least TES games are open world. I could say BioWare games are not really RPG's but adventure games because they are so linear (using the same logic).

@DaendyrProductions He said "Hell, Oblivion's really not even an RPG (just an open-world action game with stats)". IMO Bethesda games are the true RPG's. BioWare games are very linear and short but they are still damn good, they usually have better story.
tontsa911 7 months ago
@DWTerminator Huh? How is that? As far as I can see, Oblivion is still as much of a Role Playing Game as NVM... Actually, Oblivion has much better connection Player-Character than NVM...I think you missunderstand the meaning of RPG. Anyway, nice review. Take care
Morr1992 8 months ago
Also, "NVM"?
DWTerminator 8 months ago
@DWTerminator NVM is a short of Neverwinter Nights, it's often used online.. Well, you got the point, but so is the character in NVM. You don't build any emotional connections with NPC you meet in games, their personality is shortened to expressing basic emtions. There are other RPG's where bound between your character and NPC is comparably strong to those in good movies.. I agree, Oblivion is not the best RPG, it lacks "personality" but so does NVM. I don't try to be offensive by the way.
Morr1992 8 months ago
I've never seen "NVM" used for Neverwinter Nights. I *always* see "NWN."
Anyway, Neverwinter Nights feels like you're caught up in this grand adventure to save Neverwinter from a plague. You'll experience a great many hardships as you struggle to survive, and will become tougher as a result. In Oblivion... you get caught up in a terribly written "Hell never does anything but is somehow a threat" storyline that you can completely avoid and have no trouble annihilating everything in your path.
DWTerminator 8 months ago
@DWTerminator NwN is an awsome game. it is an entertaining blend of Rpg and Action-Rpg although i prefer being able to have complete control over a party of -at least- 4-5 characters. The soundtrack of this game is UNREAL.It is incredibly beautiful at times and varied enough. The graphics-animations were top notch when it first came out- i still like them. The quests are extremely well writen.Oblivion is boring- it is a bad copy of Morrowind which in my opinion is the best open world Rpg ever :)
pastlife24 8 months ago
@Morr1992 NVM? Seriously, where do you get that from? Unless it's from a different language, I could understand that this may be your own opinion of its proper abbreviation of this game.
BUT, in English, the abbreviation for Neverwinter Nights is either 'NWN' or 'NwN' - certainly not NVM.
NorwegianBastard 7 months ago
@NorwegianBastard Well you got a point.. Won't get applause from me though
Morr1992 7 months ago
@Morr1992 Yes I have. And I never expected to receive any applause at any rate... What the hell is that supposed to mean, anyway?
NorwegianBastard 7 months ago
@DWTerminator "You got the point, character in Oblivion may be a mindless drone, but so is character in NVM" Part of the sentence got lost in my post.
Morr1992 8 months ago
In NWN you're able to both choose an alignment *and* the way he/she converses with people. Depending on your choice of dialogue, your character can have a personality. In Oblivion... there's no opportunity for developing a personality at all.
Still, glad you liked the review anyway. I get highly irritated when people say Oblivion's an RPG, then ignore the fact that it's about as much of an RPG as Borderlands (which is to say "it's not but acts like it is").
DWTerminator 8 months ago
@Morr1992 I think you misunderstood the meaning of an RPG. Oblivion is barely an RPG. Listen to DWTerminator, he's right.
DaendyrProductions 7 months ago
@DaendyrProductions Well Oblivion is different than classical RPG's, but it's still an RPG... NvN, Dragon Age, Diablo 2, Gothic, Oblivion, they are all different but all of them sit under RPG category..
IN MY OPINION "RPG game " is a game where you take control over the role of a fictional character and shape his personality by making decisions and taking actions. Oblivion gives you lots of space for that.. You may not be able to manipulate the main storyline, but side quests make up for it
Morr1992 7 months ago
@DaendyrProductions The other thing I don't understand is why so many players get nostalgic about classic RPG's and bitch about new RPG's for no reason.. They are as good as the old ones if you give it a chance and take it for what it is.. It's like that argument Battlefield 3 vs COD MW3 which is pretty dumb.. Why people can't give a try both games.. Why there always has to be A vs B argument as if there would be million dollar award for guessing which game will get a bigger rate score.
Morr1992 7 months ago
@Morr1992 I'm not saying which game is better, I'm just saying that Oblivion isn't an RPG. It's that simple!
