  • I would play this forever. It looks like one of those first generation 3D games. I love it.

  • OH GOD, WANT.

  • i'd play it if you had original viridian and not this retarded prick

  • @PowerXeta I think you might've found it even more jarring to have realistic run/jump/fall animations applied to him, as opposed to his charming two-frame shuffle.

  • OMG THIS IS SO EPIC I DONT EVEN KNOW WHAT LEVEL IT IS.

  • Why is the suit green. The suit must be BLUE. THEN i will like this. (Jk i like it already! But...he's not green...)

  • @MsWoot100 You're right, he's not. He's viridian!

  • nice but i fucking hate the master chief esk guy, where is de happy face guy? :(

  • where are de happy face guy? =(

  • I'm raping the replay button

  • JUST SAW THE SNOWFLAKE BUTTON

  • 0:38 is like a flash game called "run"

  • I'm throwing my money at the screen yet nothing is happening.

  • @nanoco1000 Derpy has been dispatched to collect your monies. If she brings back enough, I will use it to hire a programmer to make this happen.

  • This looks cool! Though...

I hate to be the buzzkill to all of you guys saying that this needs to get done but it wouldn't work... VVVVVV works better in 2D because you can see the whole screen, letting you plan your movements. In 3D you don't have that luxury, and the terrain would block your view most of the time. Leaps of faith everywhere man D:

  • @ArfJason Ah, it's not that bad. I'm confident something could be done, with a clever level designer. Disregarding the sideways flip, that is. That breaks everything... It wouldn't quite be V, but that's fine by me!

I really hope I get to try out this hypothesis for real at some point in the future...

  • @ArfJason Well, what's the worst that could happen? In VVVVVV, death is a slap in the wrist :P

  • I'm waiting for the RPG version to be made.

  • ....This...... This needs to exist.

    GET ON THIS, INTERNET.

  • @ShowToddSomeLove Less so than your comment, though!

  • @ShowToddSomeLove agree!

  • *wonders if this as a Minecraft mod would be worth the effort (sadly, I don't know java, someone else'd have to make it)*

  • @WackoMcGoose That... would be a crazy roundabout way of doing it. There are other engines that are much more suited for modding something like this into existance.

  • Though, the people in the actual game wouldn't look like here, just as 3D versions of the stick figures in the real VVVVVV.

  • @TurretDude123 That's what the X is for!

  • @Roxfox Oh, right, X for Mega Man X.

  • @TurretDude123 Oh, right, X for Mega Man X.

  • Pitch this.

  • You could use the arrow keys to move and W A S D to flip.

  • @Papermariozocker Assuming a rigid camera system, yes. I prefer my 3D platformers with a free camera, though, and level design that makes sure you use it plenty.

  • if he can flip gravity 90 degrees in any direction, can't he just flip it forward and fall to the end?

  • @DragonslayerProd Yep! That's why, if anyone ever makes a 3D VVVVVV, it won't look anything like this. The level design would have to be way too awkward to compensate for that.

  • @Roxfox possible solution: add fall damage!

  • I got here from the related videos.

  • This is what the 3D Sonic games shoulda been like.

  • do it, so hard

  • Congratulations on PPPPPPowerup! I just bought it now, and if the finished version is half as pumping as this I know I'll have a great listen ahead of me!

  • A thought of Vedi Veni Vici in 3D gives me nightmares...

  • @DaveTE15 LoL

  • @DaveTE15 OH GOD.

.....That's okay, I didn't need to sleep anyway....

  • And your running cycle does looks like X's one. Especially in MHX.

  • @Riboshom Well, there's only so many ways you can run when your boots are bigger than your torso... The animation would be a complete coincidence, I can assure you. I've never even seen MHX.

  • Wow! Captain Viridian is now 100% badass!

  • For a moment I thought this was true.

  • This video reminded me of that level in Sonic Adventure 2 with all the gravity shifts. Awesomeness often leads to to remembering more awesomeness

  • I so strongly hope that this game gets made

  • So who got to this trailer of an awesome idea that may never come from the VVVVVV page on tvtropes?

  • @Kytseo Some people did. A lot of viewers came from Kotaku. Huge influx from Rock Paper Shotgun and Reddit, as well as a few from Destructoid and Escapist, among many other places. I hope you weren't expecting a bunch of thumbs up in response to that question... Strangely, that's actually my second Youtube related appearance on TVTropes...

  • @Roxfox which was the first? (and no, I won't make that comment there)

  • @Roxfox I found it from Steam's link to Kotaku.

  • @Roxfox I found it from Steam's link to Kotaku.

  • @Kytseo Astonishingly, nope.avi, I was linked from the VVVVVV forums.

  • You need to e-mail Terry Cavanagh and show him this!

  • @moccalou Oh, he's seen it! Wait a minute... Wayc?

  • @Roxfox You know me? XD

  • Holy crap... I was so hoping this was real for a minute. I want a sequel to that game really bad! That looks so cool. The remix is great too. I fully support finishing and releasing it. ^_^

  • That's an awesome remix. I'd donate to you for a .flac of it.

  • Hey, can you post your remixed sound track?

  • @DaveTE15 Nope. So far, all that exists of it is right there, in the video. I only made that short snippet for the sake of the trailer. I might go back and apply that treatment to the whole song at some point, but I don't have time for that right now.

  • @Roxfox I see. Its really nice :)

  • Looks awesome. Find some coders and make it.

  • "the one angle that most clearly shows the awesome run cycle just so happened to display it upside-down"

Those who have played VVVVVV know that "upside-down" is a laughable notion.

  • Can you throw us a download of that remix? It's pretty sick.

  • These games arent "popular" anymore? do you have to kill zombies or do you have to get the name of Call Of Duty, this is pretty awesome, but it is too hard for too much people, if EA or Activision or Whatever (maybe VALVE) will invest into this, this will be GREAT

  • @EcasmbNoobje Completely unnecessary, my friend. Independent developers haven't been allowed to blossom like this since the early 80's. A project like this wouldn't need a publisher! It'd only need fans, which it already has, and sufficiently talented developers... which it doesn't have... I guess that's the upside of having a studio to rely on, but screw that.

  • Oh, man, imagine Veni Vidi Vici here... I think I'd shoot myself :P

    Great work!

  • The whole Doing Things The Hard Way sequence would feel... kind of flat in a 3D version. Better to just make it a sequel and do a new "holy WTF, how is anyone going to complete that" sequence for it.

Though redoing the Gravitron (regular and Super) in 3D would be pretty damn cool, too.

    brb writing game engine

  • Duuude make it happen my gaming life is obviously not painful enough yet.

Also, love your design of Viridian. I actually had my own ideas about the character concepts/remake designs (ala old school anime-style) but the Mega Man X-esque look works awesomely =D

    Miss the face though

Personally would go for an orthographic 3D camera which would help with the puzzling elements of the levels since a regular cam would make things hard to see.

Who wants to play Veni Vidi Vici with a scrolling 3D cam =D

  • Master Chief with bunny ears and leg armor of Mega Man X ???

  • Better control scheme:

    Up: move forward

    Down: move backward

    Left: sidestep left

    Right: sidestep right

    Z: flip 90 degrees clockwise

    X: flip 180 degrees

    C: flip 90 degrees counterclockwise

    Mouse: change viewpoint

  • @strongo25 I dunno, I like the other guy's version better. But even then, I always envision platformers being on consoles, so in my head it was always RT and LT to flip right and left and A to flip "up". Right analog stick is camera control, obviously, but the camera in a platformer should be intelligent enough to never require manual fiddling. I kinda tried to make it feel like that in the video, but it's really difficult to make a manually keyframed camera look like a video game camera...

  • @Roxfox The flaw in the other guy's controls is that he made Q and E buttons when WASD is being used to control your direction. The removal of a finger away from the direction buttons is a big no-no. The other hand is being wasted on only the space bar. It feels cramped.

  • @strongo25 That's a more traditional action game control scheme, I'm sure. The right hand really shouldn't leave the mouse when playing a 3D PC game! Considering it's not an action game, though, maybe two hands on keyboard would be better. But then you don't have any kind of analog control at all and I wouldn't be comfortable with that either.

  • This needs to be real.

  • Control scheme:

    WASD: Move forward/backward, strafe

    Q: Rotate gravity 90° clockwise

    E: Rotate gravity 90° counter-clockwise

    Space bar: Flip gravity 180°

    Mouse: Turn

    Controls...Check. :)

  • Oh, I love VVVVVV so much, yet this would've been SO unplayeble.

Can someone actually down-port VVVVVV to C64, Apple II or ZX Spectrum please: )

  • If this is made, it should be called VVVVVV: DDD

  • improved metal storm ...

  • Is that supposed to be a Bomberman Act Zero version of Viridian?

  • @Pikawil64 Supposed to? Kinda... But not really. To let you in on a dirty secret, I just made his design up as I went along. When I got to the head, I tried many variations, but everything I made either turned out really bad, or would require much more work to make look good. I originally wanted a helmetless anime-esque face, but I quickly realized what a pain that would be to animate along with the rest of him.

The animation itself was really the only thing I spent any time on.

  • @Roxfox

Ah, glad to hear that the design was due to behind-the-scenes reasons rathan a mere parody of remaking things in a form that's, in the words of Buzzed Bunny, "FUCKING EXTREME!"

  • The Remix of Positive Force is so fucking awesome, is there any possibility to download it?

  • @MrCocktaiI I'm afraid there isn't. The only part that exists is the part you hear here. It's just the regular song with higher fidelity bass and drums on top of it. Plus the cheesy trance synth. I threw it together in an evening between rendering all the video stuff... I guess I could apply the same treatment to the rest of the song, but I'm honestly not comfortable doing that. I'd be too tempted to make a proper remix, and I'm not talented enough to manage one of those!

  • @Roxfox

IMO it is pretty awesome in its cheesyness, but if you're not comfortable with that, there's nothing I can do I guess. Quite a pity, but oh well ;)

  • @MrCocktaiI Haha. Well... we'll see. SoulEye seemed to appreciate the cheesy trance flavor, too. If people would dig it, I guess that's a good reason to do it. I still have to find the time, though. Doing the whole song will take more than an afternnoon!

  • Why can't this be real? ;-;

  • if i propose on the internet would you marry me?

  • @fantomkilla07 Are you a sexy, young female? If not, then no.

  • FUCK YEAH.

    Viridian looks like a BADASS.

  • You sir deserve an internet for making this trailer.

  • I thik it would be such an awesome game if ever made. I have problems no doubt with 2D, but i believe if they ever decide to make a 3D version, the tester should be the first person to actually manage getting Master of the Universe without any tool.

  • I can't even manage to beat it in 2D, I don't think I'd ever be able to pull it off in 3D.

    ....Doesn't mean I wouldn't try of course :D

  • do want

  • i think he should do something like if this was a nes game then the sequel should have a bit better graphics like the snes then ps1 graphics and so on like having it tell the history of video games

  • OMG... This needs to happen.

  • Someone fund this.

  • Do you think this game should be real? Cos if you decide to ACTUALLY make this, its really gotta be much harder. :D Thumb me up if you think so as well.

  • @SoraCool32 There's been some throwing around of ideas regarding a 3D V remake in various corners of the Internet, but nothing concrete's happened yet. I've been in touch with someone who wanted to make a game engine to support the idea, but it would be such a huge project, I'm not sure it'll ever happen.

I'm glad that you recognize how terrible my "level" design was for this video, though!

  • Is that the guile theme I hear in there?

  • @DuelinginRS Nope. Just good ol' Positive Force. Subconsciously inspired by Guile's theme, most likely, because it goes with everything! But far from the same song.

(I think Positive Force is much catchier.)

  • @Roxfox I shall look up that song then, haha

  • My brain would explode trying to switch between 6 platforms

And if angles were introduced...holy fucking shit

  • The music fade-out at 0:22 is EPIC. Holy crap.

  • This is way too freakin' cool. VVVVVV is one of my fave indie games, and it would be OSSIM in 3D.

Level designing would be a pain for sure. Or it would be a really fun challenge.

I am thinking that the 3D view could always be in one direction, and you can only flip to four directions.

Think of having a StarFox-ish view, and being only able to flip up, down, left and right. Not forward or backward.

  • but, where is the smiley face?? D:

  • Linked from RPS, DToid, The Escapist, Reddit... And only 20.000 views? Damn, you deserve a LOT more.

  • This is fantastic. I can't even imagine how difficult the control scheme would be :P

  • nice work mr fawks :3

  • I really like Captain Viridian's design here. Looks sort of a cross between Master Chief and one of those Gundam pilot suits, but it works pretty well.

  • This is actually an interesting idea. As presented, it looks cool but wouldn't be too fun to play.

But if the new 3D perspective were limited to non-movement observation, and the gravity flipping enforced a camera perspective change, as well as changing which surfaces were actively "dangerous" or not (essentially keeping the gameplay 2D while being 3D) it'd work.

But then it'd need something else to set it apart from the original game. I guess I didn't solve anything, there. Hrm.

  • This looks like it would be fun as hell... Kind of wish it was an actual game... Maybe you can team up with the original creator to make it...

  • NEXT UP 4D

  • I SO love reddit! It makes me find awesome stuff like this video!

  • Someone needs to make this into a full game! 3D VVVVVV would be the greatest thing since sliced bread...and the original VVVVVV

  • excellent video man! but the game is waaaaay quicker. lets have some 2x sections!

    nice job, also!

  • 0:44 When I saw this, I thought "Easy. Just switch to the wall at the end of all that and plummet right through."

But I guess six-wall VVVVVV would be really hard to make levels for..

  • @KinsmanCa Yep. Being able to flip in more than one direction would basically be the equivalent of flying, in a platformer. I just designed this to look as ridiculous as possible; It would make a TERRIBLE game!

  • @Roxfox

uh...and that's different from hitting up and down quickly how?

Just include fall damage and it's all good.

My guess is that you can't switch gravity direction until you've contacted the next surface.

  • @Varionic Go play the VVVVVV demo! It's available on Kongregate. Then you'll understand the dimensional design dilemmas we were discussing.

  • @Roxfox

I did play it. My guess that you can't switch gravity until you hit the next surface was exactly on target. My statement still stands. There is no reason you couldn't add another direction. Plummeting is valid gameplay. See AAAAAAaaaaaAAAAAaa!!! as a reference.

  • @Varionic True enough, but it wouldn't allow very interesting environments! Every wall would have to be covered in spikes, or not exist at all (like in the last part of this video). You'd pretty much have no reason to run if you can flip in any direction you want on the horizontal plane. Basically, if you can see a wall, you can flip straight to it, and that would destroy the kind of exploration and puzzling that made the original so fun!

  • Very well done! Can't wait to see more from you

  • Agreed. Would be beyond awesome.

  • i wish thte was a real game ):

  • Comment removed

  • WHOA! This blows my V upmake (3V) out of the water! Excellent work man!

  • @CptCool2 Hah, well, not really. The important distinction here is that I have a fake trailer, and you have a prototype for an actual game...

  • EPIC! VVVVVVV'll be very very hard with 3rd dimension

  • And I thought the first was hard enough... now another dimension is being added? o.O

  • Awesome, I'd totally play this.

  • I would absolutely play this.

  • THIS MADE MY DAY!!!! /Souleye

  • @1ff73ng43 Oh, Terry's and your approval made MY day! Thanks!

  • I was literally like "WTF?"
