FACT.carl fontana is one of the two greatest trombone players ever.frank rosolino just has it by a whisker for me.[debatable]these two guys are the trombone.anybody seen god?l.o.l.
God gave him the gift of his talent and Carl took full advantage of what God gave him through many hours of practice. If you don't use what God gave you, you lose it. Hey khbgkh, has it ever crossed your mind that if you believed in the Power of God, perhaps you'd be better at whatever it is you do?
Carl Fontana was not only a very good bone player...but his talent shines through on choice of songs like Emily. "If I only had a brain" is another , he knew beautifully structured melodies and worked them into wonderful things to listened to
Through all of this, regardless of what we believe in and the fact that I'm a Christian, it seems that we've all forgotten that this video is about Carl.
@bullfrog11758 You know, I spoke the same thing to the other guy that i did to you. Fuckin' dick. I was trying to help out. Whatever. I'll mind my own business, then.
@bullfrog11758 Dudes, Shut the fuck up! Take your arguements to a proper video- like Zeitgeist! It's so weird that you guys can talk about "God" and such on a video about Music. Wow.
@bullfrog11758 who made the creator? then who made that creator? the only thing that everyone knows. is that you dont know. you fill your insecurity by assuming that a mystical being is constantly looking out for you. it is irrelevant if he exists or not. because neither you nor i know if he does or doesn't and we will never know. all i know. and all that is real to me. is how outrageously good carl fontana is at trombone. 10,000 hours of practice, not bible study, got him there.
@mariomario987 Dudes, Shut the fuck up! Take your arguements to a proper video- like Zeitgeist! It's so weird that you guys can talk about "God" and such on a video about Music. Wow.
Btw, it's ok to believe in God as long as you don't make a mockery of your own life by praising him 24/7
I looked at the comments to read some views on Carl Fontana's playing, and all I read is an argument about the existence of God. How do these comments end up attached to a video of a trombone player? Please, someone explain.
@theforce119 Science can explain crap all in terms of the universe. Even looking at the big bang, Einsteins theory on a Universe that expands then retracts, where did it all start before that? Did the universe just appear out of NOTHING? Science can explain crapall, follow it blindly and you'll have no answer for anything bout life. Have a faith and none of those questions bout how we got here matter. I know what I'd rather have.
@bullfrog11758 There is also no proof that the Flying Spaghetti Monster doesn't exist, so should I know believe in His Noodliness? Come on, I rather share the view of scientists with their proof, theories and their lack of sticking to the same thing than to believe in something which has absolutely no proof. Why should I fool myself? How do you explain to yourself that the earth is 4,54 billion years old? When did god created it?
@bullfrog11758 Please stop spreading your view about a god which for sure doesn't exist. It's a manmade thing to explain the mysteries of our world.Science is a much better way to explain. There is no evidence about god at all. Do you think some "god" just created the earth in seven days? Did he also created the trillions of stars/planets? It just happened indeed because we have the right conditions for organisms to live. This man worked hard to reach the level he has. Brilliant, all by himself.
This looks like it was filmed at Carolla's in Las Vegas in about '98 where he played every Monday night. I was at Berklee as na alto saxophone perf major at the time, but I had family in Vegas. I stopped in at Carolla's one night and played with him then decided to stay in Vegas for a semester so I could play with him every Monday night, which I did for a good 4 months. Don Menza and others would show up every once in a while as well. Was quite an epic experience. rip Carl we love you baby
I'm curious as to where you got this video...I believe that I'm the bass player on this one, and that it was probably recorded at either the Four Queens or the Riviera in Las Vegas. Any more info?
He was the very essence of the West Coast cool style. I saw Kenton three times in the early 60s but unfortunately all the legends like Carl were long gone. My folks used to catch him in Vegas in the 70s/80s. Rosolino was great, I agree, but what about Milt Bernhardt? Man, that guy was made for the huge Kenton and Woody Herman sounds!
So many idiots on this post......Fontana is simply remarkable and among the finest tbonists that have ever lived. Anyone who doesn't get that is simply an uninformed fool.
if you dont believe then ilsten to "Strike Up The Band" on Bobby Kinghts "Great American Trombone Company". That track will make a believer out of anyone.
well ive heard carl play a double high b flat, soar through tempos of quarter = 350+, and play some of the most bluesy stuff Ive ever heard in my life, so your wrong, and there are mant people who agree with me. when you get to the level of carl and frank there is no better or worse. It just has to do with what style you prefer. As far as talent goes, or playing abililty, Frank and Carl are pretty equal in my book even though I prefer Carl more.
Raymond Kataryznky my Trombone Teacher and Master in the beginning of the 80s was saying the Carl Fontana was the best! Musically Perfect, Double Tripple tounging great master and makes everything look and sound so easy! Tremendous sound and fantastic Musician all around ! We have all lost a Grand Master of this unique instrument!
I saw him for the first time on YouTube, type in: The Peter Gunn Theme + Henry Mancini + Steve Allen video from the 1984 solo he did on the Steve Allen Show with the great Henry Mancini. What old timers thought was funny was that he chewed gum before and after the solo. One respondent said he spent a day with him in 'Vegas in '99 and he chewed(gum) "all day long",
"it was funny". He described him as a "TROMBONE-MONSTER". Why do jazz greats like these two have to leave us so soon?
Great lines that flow effortlessly through the beautiful chord progressions of this tune. Carl caresses the melody and then creates his own improvised melodies that refer to the original in such an exquisite way. A true jazz master. And a lot of blue-eyed soul, to boot!
Yes, WHY did somebody take off Carl's beautiful rendition of "If I Only Had A Brain"? Would somebody please put that back on!?! I think it's great as I think everything I've heard by this trombone genius is awesome....what awesome breath control and phrasing....makes me wince at the sound of my own playing when I listen to Carl.
Why did they take all the other Carl videos off? There was about 5 videos with Carl and the Paul Anka Band that are completley gone not mention a real sweet clip of Carl with Frank Rosolino, and Bill Watrous.

Great playing! I think that the sound we hear is far from Frank's sound, because of maybe poor amplification and downgraded audio rate...
