How long did it take you to do this using Pencil? I've decided to try my hand at animation, and since I have an Ubuntu distro on my laptop, thought it'd be nice to give open source a swing vs. doing commercial software on my wife's Windows 7 laptop...
@bigvirgotube what commercial software are you using on your wifes laptop? tv paint? Toonboom? I prefer Pencil to both of those. There isnt all the interface in your face. You will likely have to use something to composite your shots together unless your animation is relatively simple.
To answer your question, I forget exactly how long i spent on it as this was a while ago and I was multitasking at the time, but I remember at the end of the day it was finished. So... less than a day!
@JakPaybak Thanks for the reply! Actually, we hadn't found anything, and I like the idea of using Linux to accomplish something outside of my work. I plan to make simple animations, but what would you recommend to do shot composition?
I was just wondering, because I've had it a while now and haven't been able to work it out, how do you get some parts to stay still in each frame? As in, like in yours the upper part of the body moved while the rest of it stayed deadly still. I really need to know how, could you help me out?
@EddieLowFilthSlayer Yep, using action script rain would be very easy to add to flash. You would draw a single rain droplet and then make the computer draw and animate it with a few short lines of code. They've made this so frighteningly simple, do not be afraid of learning to code, code is fun.
@MoJoSB Not really hard, but it does have some quirks you need to get used. They are going to start regularly updating the software soon so i'd expect those to get ironed out. It's the best free 2d raster animation out there. (the vector stuff needs work)

wow...I feel really stupid after watching that. The fact the the quality of the film is so low that we then are cons to whatever is really happening, is pretty sad. Now, even though the 3 second memory misconception is false, to train a group of dogs to do a coordinated task such as this would extremely challening, let alone do it with a species of aquatic carp. Give me a break
@CO2H2O Thanks. speech can be broken down into several differnet mouth poses or "phonemes." Then its all about breaking down your sound file and figuring out which one applies. This is a bit of an over simplification but if you really are interested try googling phonemes or lip sync tutorial.
nice,,, what file format did you say as.... did you use any other programs to beef up the final Product. Can you layer an animation over an existing AVI animation clip in PENCIL?.... NICE WORK - BTW
I exported as a series of PNG images. I used Shake to composite it, but I had made a mistake with the alpha mask so this doesnt look as good as it could have. If you can convert your AVI animation to a series of images, you should be able to import it on its own layer.
what type of sound file did you use? everytime I import sound it makes a ding sound when I play it especial with .wma files, I tried .wav and it worked in the program but when I saved it as a flash file the sound was gone??
Really nice job on the animation. Kind'a funny storyline. Do you use windows? If so, how did you convert your frames into a movie file? I'm getting stuck on that one. Thx.
Sorry about the uber beginner question but the backgrounds- can they be a colored texture rather than a solid color? ex a bug on a quilt image, the quilt is colorful and has stitches- the bug has texture too- what is the ability of pencil to do heavily detailed backgrounds instead of solids?
Thank you, can you import an image to be on the bug as it moves across an imported background? Thanks too for the answer above these were just the two things I was curious about the most so don't worry I won't keep asking you questions. :)
But... how do you get your animations onto youtube? I tried saving it as a GIF and importing it to movie maker, but that failed miserably... do you have to import every frame seperatley? :S
Are you asking about Pencil? Thats the name of the program I used to animate this. I exported as a series of PNG's and then imported those as an image sequence into another program. We have discussed this on the Pencil forum. Check it out.
Aw man... yeah, I was asking about pencil~ I just wanted to know if you could export it as a whole, and not every frame one by one :P Thanks though ^^
You can export as .mov in the OSX version. For some reason they haven't added quicktime support to the Windows or Linux version yet. Exporting as an image sequence is better if you want to work with the animation further and add sound though.
Been cartooning forever.... trying to play with it and make them move... self teaching. downloaded pencil... can not figure out how to turn it into I file I can export onto youtube... I tried exporting it to moviemaker to convert teh file but it wont let me. Please help. :)
I see you have asked your question on the Pencil Forum. You should have your answer shortly i hope. I only export as PNG sequences myself. Then i import it into another program. I use Shake, but its overkill most times. Awesome paintings btw... and dancing!
Well, its no where near as polished as Toonboom.. but its free! I wouldnt use the vector tools because they are really rough. Also I would export as an image sequence and import that into another application to add sound. Pencil allows you to import sound, but not export it. Anyways, check out the site, there is a pretty nice community there in the forums.
Well, I only used Pencil to do the animation. I used the sound layer only as a reference to get my lip sync working. You will need to use another program if you want to add sound. thats amazing. i just got pencil. how do you get the lines to stay exactly the same? i mean i know theres the onion skin thing but its impossible to draw your previous frame exactly the same. is there some option where i can copy the previous frame on to the next one and then edit it?
Nicely done, but I think the one thing about it that makes it look not so good is that there are not enough frames between each position of the mouth and the positions of the mouth are too exagerated. Actually, that's two things, but whatever.
It's "Sally's Song" from "Nightmare Before Christmas." This is Fiona Apple doing a cover. You can find the original version and Fiona's on youtube. And thank you :)
I thought it sounded familiar! Nice animation btw. I think the sync is good enough. Actually it can be a little funny if it's not perfect. It just adds to the flavor.
Nicely done. I'm guessing you imported some classic lipsync images from Flash Lipsync v1.02? (For anyone else who liked them, that software is now freeware).
Wow!! - if you mean the animation program developed for use with Macs, Shake really is a high-end piece of software!
For anyone using a PC, identical lip-syn images can be grabbed from the free PC software that I mentioned. You can then import into your own animations - or you can try to create a linked lip-sync and soundtrack.
You have some very interesting experiments uploaded to Youtube. Are you a professional animator? Your work certainly looks up to that standard.
Actually both Pencil(freeware) and Shake(payware) are available on OSX, Windows, and Linux. This animation was done before I understood some of the oddities that arrise when you use both of the programs together. My next animation(thats nearly done) is far more ambitous, though short. And surely better quality.
Perhaps my next animation will allow me to make the transition from Hobbiest to Professional.
I assume this is "Pencilguy" from the Pencil forum? The same way you made your background layer still, you can make the body still. Just background on one layer, the body on another layer.. the head on another layer.
hahhahahahahahahahaha very funny indeed!!! lol
