  • hahhahahahahahahahaha very funny indeed!!! lol

  • I really thought that was great!

  • How to duplicate copies to avoid redoing every time the same drawing on pencil tutorial please? thnl you very much =) (sorry for my bad English T_T

  • I can't get sound on Pencil. Whenever I try to add music, it won't play.

  • @xMeganVlogs yeah, me too! I've tried countless times to add sound, but it just won't work. I don't have a Mac computer thou...

  • @adanBPP Well he used Pencil, and it's perfect for simple animations.

  • Amazing! Makes me want to animate ^^

  • that is amazing

  • How long did it take you to do this using Pencil? I've decided to try my hand at animation, and since I have an Ubuntu distro on my laptop, thought it'd be nice to give open source a swing vs. doing commercial software on my wife's Windows 7 laptop...

  • @bigvirgotube what commercial software are you using on your wifes laptop? tv paint? Toonboom? I prefer Pencil to both of those. There isnt all the interface in your face. You will likely have to use something to composite your shots together unless your animation is relatively simple.

To answer your question, I forget exactly how long i spent on it as this was a while ago and I was multitasking at the time, but I remember at the end of the day it was finished. So... less than a day!

  • @JakPaybak Thanks for the reply! Actually, we hadn't found anything, and I like the idea of using Linux to accomplish something outside of my work. I plan to make simple animations, but what would you recommend to do shot composition?

  • Whats with all the "="?

  • veri nice

  • WHATS THE SONG?!?1

  • @CuteyErin1 It's Sally's Song. Fiona Apple cover. Haven't you seen Nightmare before Christmas?

  • After watching this Im so geting Pencial!

  • This was fro penciL??

  • best lipsync vid i ever seen!!

  • its good i dont mean to be mean but i dont really like the song or the voice

  • what's the name of this song???

  • did you color it in pencil too? o:

  • I love the song!!!! ive replayed this video like 100 times

  • I was just wondering, because I've had it a while now and haven't been able to work it out, how do you get some parts to stay still in each frame? As in, like in yours the upper part of the body moved while the rest of it stayed deadly still. I really need to know how, could you help me out?

  • nice .. cool work

  • Can you record your own sound witha microphone using Pencil?

  • Out of curiosity: how long did this take you?

  • This is awesome. I love Pencil but I am not this good. haha

  • Whoa! There're tricks in Flash that allow you to generate rain--don't tell me that you have to fraw each individual droplet in Pencil?

  • @EddieLowFilthSlayer None of this involved Flash at all. Rain was added in Shake, It's just a cheesy canned effect.

  • @JakPaybak *draw I knew it wasn't Flash, I was curious about each program's capabilities. But Shake, that's cool.

  • @EddieLowFilthSlayer Yep, using action script rain would be very easy to add to flash. You would draw a single rain droplet and then make the computer draw and animate it with a few short lines of code. They've made this so frighteningly simple, do not be afraid of learning to code, code is fun.

  • I like those floppy eyelashes

  • lol.poor girl

  • Great lipsync, creepy eyelashes.

  • What song is that? And i found out the animation really.... Cute.

  • the lipsync reads great to me...it looks terrific...

  • ROFL! Great job on the animation mate, and the joke was well done.

  • cool!can u tell me how to get on animating i don't know how to!!!!

  • Love the lashes xD

  • If she wasn't depressed before the lightning...

    she definately was afterwards...

    poor girl...

  • I haven't used it yet myself but very excited to try...

  • Well done... Is pencil hard to use?

  • @MoJoSB Not really hard, but it does have some quirks you need to get used. They are going to start regularly updating the software soon so i'd expect those to get ironed out. It's the best free 2d raster animation out there. (the vector stuff needs work)

  • No, it's just time consuming.

  • i love the song and the animation.....please make more....lol

  • wow its just absolutly great jak how did u make a lipsync ?

  • @CO2H2O Thanks. speech can be broken down into several differnet mouth poses or "phonemes." Then its all about breaking down your sound file and figuring out which one applies. This is a bit of an over simplification but if you really are interested try googling phonemes or lip sync tutorial.

  • How long does it take to make something like that? :)

  • love this! trying to learn pencil at the moment and this is really inspiring!

  • Thank you. Pencil is a little odd, but once you figure out its quirks you can really do some fun stuff with it.

  • nice,,, what file format did you say as.... did you use any other programs to beef up the final Product. Can you layer an animation over an existing AVI animation clip in PENCIL?.... NICE WORK - BTW

  • I exported as a series of PNG images. I used Shake to composite it, but I had made a mistake with the alpha mask so this doesnt look as good as it could have. If you can convert your AVI animation to a series of images, you should be able to import it on its own layer.

  • Great job!

  • Fantastic. Makes me want to see more.

  • lol

  • lol

  • good

  • That was weird

  • Superb!

  • WONDERFUL!!

  • Good job, really funny.

  • what type of sound file did you use? everytime I import sound it makes a ding sound when I play it especial with .wma files, I tried .wav and it worked in the program but when I saved it as a flash file the sound was gone??

  • AMAZING!!!! how did u make her lipsync? was it difficult? and how do u make her look so life-like? :)

  • what program

  • Pencil. Its a free open-source program for OSX, Windows, and Unix.

  • Really nice job on the animation. Kind'a funny storyline. Do you use windows? If so, how did you convert your frames into a movie file? I'm getting stuck on that one. Thx.

  • You go to file -- Publish Movie and it will take you through a short step-by-step wizard.

  • Thanks! I'll try that.

  • you go to edit or file --> export---> then pick if you want SWF(flash) or a MOV (movie) file.

  • can you draw shapes in pencil?

  • shapes? you mean vector based layers? it does allow that but no tweaking of shapes at all. This is a raster layer howerver.

  • nice!))

  • catchy tune whats it from?

  • Nightmare before xmas covered by another artist.

  • Lol! Reminds me of the alien "I will survive" video that was made! Nice job on the animation btw

  • Sorry about the uber beginner question but the backgrounds- can they be a colored texture rather than a solid color? ex a bug on a quilt image, the quilt is colorful and has stitches- the bug has texture too- what is the ability of pencil to do heavily detailed backgrounds instead of solids?

  • You can import any image as a background. You could use a picture of a real quilt, and draw a bug if thats what you mean.

  • Thank you, can you import an image to be on the bug as it moves across an imported background? Thanks too for the answer above these were just the two things I was curious about the most so don't worry I won't keep asking you questions. :)

  • You can't do that easily in Pencil. It's mainly meant for drawing animations.

You'd be better off doing that in Flash or Shake, or After Effects.

  • Is this vector or bitmap? It looks like vector.

  • I went a bit too heavy on the outlines I guess. Its bitmap.

  • I love those lashes :)

But... how do you get your animations onto youtube? I tried saving it as a GIF and importing it to movie maker, but that failed miserably... do you have to import every frame seperatley? :S

  • Are you asking about Pencil? Thats the name of the program I used to animate this. I exported as a series of PNG's and then imported those as an image sequence into another program. We have discussed this on the Pencil forum. Check it out.

  • Aw man... yeah, I was asking about pencil~ I just wanted to know if you could export it as a whole, and not every frame one by one :P Thanks though ^^

  • You can export as .mov in the OSX version. For some reason they haven't added quicktime support to the Windows or Linux version yet. Exporting as an image sequence is better if you want to work with the animation further and add sound though.

  • Ah... I have windows :P But I want to add sound anyways, so I guess it works out.

  • Love this!... am just learning animation and stumbled accross this... so dig it!!!

  • Cool. What type of animation?

  • I see you have asked your question on the Pencil Forum. You should have your answer shortly i hope. I only export as PNG sequences myself. Then i import it into another program. I use Shake, but its overkill most times. Awesome paintings btw... and dancing!

  • lol! that's good, the ending is funny.

  • I just downloaded pencil.

    I think it's pretty neat. ^^

I downloaded it because of this video here.

  • love it you rock

  • This is fun. What file format do you save your Pencil animations in to upload to You Tube?

  • I believe this was H.264.

  • He used some vid maker to make it avi ,or mpg ,or ...u know

  • in which file did you change it? I tried that many times...... but it was always he wrong one...

  • i got to this video from the gallery on pencil's website, congrats :P

  • I thought the lipsync was fine

  • So you made this in Pencil huh?

I've been using a pirated copy of Toonboom studio(cause I can't afford it). How's this compare to that?

  • Well, its no where near as polished as Toonboom.. but its free! I wouldnt use the vector tools because they are really rough. Also I would export as an image sequence and import that into another application to add sound. Pencil allows you to import sound, but not export it. Anyways, check out the site, there is a pretty nice community there in the forums.

  • Toonboom studio, is very hard to understand, 2d Pencil is very easy with photoshop and after effects :p

  • Um excuse me but how do you add sound cause whenever i try to do it it won't let me I added the sound layer...but still nothing...please help me..

  • Well, I only used Pencil to do the animation. I used the sound layer only as a reference to get my lip sync working. You will need to use another program if you want to add sound. Export as .png sequence or .mov and bring it into another application. There are several suggested programs in the Pencil forum for this.

  • i used to pirate software lol. i got in trouble by cablevision. >:(

  • lol! love the lightning part so funny

  • Spera ever heard of keyframes and layers =_=!

  • Haha, Hey this is pretty funny. I liked it.

  • thats amazing. i just got pencil. how do you get the lines to stay exactly the same? i mean i know theres the onion skin thing but its impossible to draw your previous frame exactly the same. is there some option where i can copy the previous frame on to the next one and then edit it?

  • yep, command+c if you are on a mac, and i believe its control+c on windows.. i dont know what the combo is for linux.

  • That's not the command in windows, and if it is, then maybe I'm not doing it right. Anybody know how to do it?

  • use command+v if ur on a Mac, or cntrl+v If u on PC

  • yeh, do a frame, go to edit, select all, then copy, then add another frame and paste, then erase what you want to and add what you want to.

  • Nicely done, but I think the one thing about it that makes it look not so good is that there are not enough frames between each position of the mouth and the positions of the mouth are too exagerated. Actually, that's two things, but whatever.

    All in all, good work.

  • Hahaha! Love the lightning punchline.

  • What's the name of this song & who's it by?

This is really amazing! Nicely done. C:

  • It's "Sally's Song" from "Nightmare Before Christmas." This is Fiona Apple doing a cover. You can find the original version and Fiona's on youtube. And thank you :)

  • I thought it sounded familiar! Nice animation btw. I think the sync is good enough. Actually it can be a little funny if it's not perfect. It just adds to the flavor.

  • reminds me of courage the cowardly dog

  • Nicely done. I'm guessing you imported some classic lipsync images from Flash Lipsync v1.02? (For anyone else who liked them, that software is now freeware).

  • Thanks. And nope, done entirely in Pencil and Shake.

  • Wow!! - if you mean the animation program developed for use with Macs, Shake really is a high-end piece of software!

For anyone using a PC, identical lip-syn images can be grabbed from the free PC software that I mentioned. You can then import into your own animations - or you can try to create a linked lip-sync and soundtrack.

You have some very interesting experiments uploaded to Youtube. Are you a professional animator? Your work certainly looks up to that standard.

  • Actually both Pencil(freeware) and Shake(payware) are available on OSX, Windows, and Linux. This animation was done before I understood some of the oddities that arrise when you use both of the programs together. My next animation(thats nearly done) is far more ambitous, though short. And surely better quality.

Perhaps my next animation will allow me to make the transition from Hobbiest to Professional.

  • eh eh eh

  • haha lool pretty cool i've tried a small synch myself on pencil but ended up with disastrous results... lol

  • ok now

  • lol!

  • loo ya it is and thanks now i have everthing i need to know =]

  • very amazing, plzz respond i just wana know how you got the body to stay the same in every fram i can i have to keeep tracing the onion skin

  • I assume this is "Pencilguy" from the Pencil forum? The same way you made your background layer still, you can make the body still. Just background on one layer, the body on another layer.. the head on another layer.

  • yes do the whole song cuz it looks good so far!

  • Do the whole song!
