WoW! Hell yeah! Love Alkaline Trio! Listening to a lot of Alkaline Trio, Hey You!, The Offspring, All Time Low, The Get Up Kids, Blink-182, and No Doubt....
Hey You! is still pretty new, but they're waaaaaaaay dope. Pop/Punk/Rock with a real cool edge. Plus they've got a pretty cute chick singer :-) check em out....
Ya know, I gotta hand it to Alk3 for sounding good live as well as recorded. It's refreshing to know that somebody still can. Please, don't reply, I really don't care about who else sounds good live, or any of your opinions whatsoever. You can comment about this comment, but no replies, graci xD in any case, gotta love this music!
I think that's a while ago, saw them live two/three weeks ago, he's still playing a Goldtop and a Silverbust that's almost green due to bad painting. Both Les Pauls that is.
its not due to bad painting. adam jones from tool has one. its almost green because its been exposed to sunlight for to long from what ive read on them. if its still the original or close to original paint there worth alot of mooolah
Skiba said it himself in an interview, Gibson had for that model a few bad painting years, something in the mixture or anything like that. Don't say I'm right, I'm only saying what the master said himself ;)!
that's entirely too creepy that you just referred to a lead singer and guitar player of a band as the master. don't get me wrong alkaline trio is my favorite band and has been for a couple years, but it's just too creepy to refer to someone as 'master' because they know something about a guitar.
It hurts me to hear Matt struggling to keep his voice. In the last few albums Dan has taken over. Dan's a good enough singer to carry the band but I deeply miss Matt's voice.
...what's wrong with using a click track? If you've ever played in a setting like that, you should know that at those volumes, it's really easy to get lost in all the sound. Metronomes are really helpful.
theres nothing wrong with the guys having a second guitarist play some parts loads of bands do it i mean queen used the whole time on the solos to make it look like brian may was doing the harmony parts by himself
There's nothing lame about using a backing track, it's the song. It's what makes the song, you can't expect them to have a million other people on stage fucking around. Trio forver.
the most impressive thing about this video is the bands ability, mostly the drummers ability, to stay on time perfectly. without a backing piano track, they would have had room to fuck up, or even barely speed up or slow down unknowingly for complicated drum fills, but when the piano comes back in half way through the song, its perfect. thats hard to do.
see those things in their ears....those are called in ear monitors...they could just have a guy cueing the piano when it comes back in...but if not they could also be playing to a click track
i can't say that there was or wasn't a piano track playing the whole time. but it makes no difference if it was cued back in or if it played throughout the entire song. if the piano was cued back in when that part of the song came, do you hear any difference in tempo between the band's playing and the piano? no. that would mean that the drummer and rest of the band kept perfect tempo, whether or not there was a click track involved. that shits impressive. thats why these guys are musicians.
I'm sorry, I love these guys, but I think playing to a backing track or whatever is pretty lame. I remember thinking that when i saw them on the crimson tour. However, when they played a bunch of dates for the 'goddammit' tenth anniversary, they didn't use all the effects, and I thought it was a much better show.
Matt and Dan actually sound kind of tone deaf in this clip, anyway.
Dogedart67: Listen to there older stuff. They have always been a trio. In many songs of there latest record 'crimson', they have used some backup guitar and piano's. Songs such as Settle for satin, Time to waste, Sadie. Occasionally they use there backup guitar performed by Nolan McGuire. A example is the live performance at reading, which you can watch here on youtube.
I'm guessing they used the recorded version of the piano...but the pianist on the album is Roger Manning...you can see him on this song from Conan O'Brien.
As far as the leads, there are no leads in this video, definitely only one guitar. Sometimes Nolan McGuire plays backup guitar at shows, but not last time I saw them on the Occult Roots tour.
You just named 5 players total. How does that equal a trio( my point being)? That's lame that they use a previously recorded track live. Where do they draw the line??? Sounds like mili vanili to me.
Trio is a trio because the other two people I mentioned are not in the band. Matt, Dan, and Derek write, record, and play the music. Nobody else records their music for them. Sometimes, not always, they have extra players to fatten the live sound up. When I saw them on tour, they left out the piano and had no extra guitar.
Are solo artists not solo artists if they have a backing band?
Oh, wait! There's a video on YouTube of Alkaline Trio playing at Warped Tour, and Chris #2 from Anti-Flag and Chuck Ragan from HWM come out and sing "Radio" with them! I guess they have been in the band for a few years now too!
And I don't know that they used the prerecorded track, that's just my guess. If that's the case, I guess they probably used it because the pianist couldn't be there. Or maybe MTV insisted on the piano track being present, even if Trio could play the song without it.
no, there are other tracs going on, there is obviously another guitarist there...he's PRETTY burried in behind matt, but he's there.
if you listen to the little bridge-y part, you can hear before the octave chord part there aer two guitars...one is pretty much all treble Tonally. and matts tone is slightly more rounded.
fact is, you can hear it if you REALLY try.
However im not denying the fact that the trio is still a trio.
I think the part where I really notice is the outro. There is the F# (if I remember right) chord that is repeated 4 times in the outro. On the album version, after the second repeat the two guitar tracks split...one stays on the F#, the other goes to octave chords. On this version, it is pretty clearly just Matt on the octave, after he moves off the F#, there is no guitar that stays on the F#, as I would assume the backup guitar would do.
Comparing them to Milli Vanilli, a band who had another person record all their material, and lip-synched live, is completely invalid, as there is really no basis for comparison.
fuck ya! these guys could plug into a dead slug and great tone, but matt allisons' production does wounders for there sound. on ALL there albums, i should know i listen to them constantly. best band ever.
the reason matt's voice is off is because at this time he was taking steroids to lower his voice because it has been getting higher the older he has gotten thats why it isnt the best of quality and thats why he has trouble reaching the high notes. did anyone notice on good mourning matt's voice is totally different from maybe ill catch fire. the point is matt kicks ass as does all of alkaline trio....dan never ceases to mak me laugh especially when he grew a beard
I really like this song and I was looking for a video of it and I have to say, the singer is disappointing in this one. He's struggleing for the high notes and seems really unstable vocal-wise. Great studio version, less than average live. Kinda seems like he's crying when I watch it a second time.
Sorry but I'm not even a fan of Alkaline Trio's new stuff because of his changed vocals. But even I have to admit, he sings a lot better than he used to. And that live version is almost identical to the studio vocal wise. Of course he's working hard to reach high notes because it's not easy, but he's hitting them.
When you're as famous and mainstream as Alkaline Trio, you're not expected to "work hard" at the high notes, you're supposed hit them and make it seem easy, period. His voice is smoother and doesn't tremble as much in the studio version. Listen two the two back to back and you'll see what I mean.
Well there's prob been a lot of tweeking done to it in the studio to be fair. And it's not really about having perfect vocals. The notes are there, there's feeling put into it, and the harmonies aren't a million miles off. It's rougher, but isn't that part of the appeal of live versions?
cookie cutter shit, and what interesting lyrics

Were the Beatles not a quartet because they had backup musicians?
Are any bands who have ever played with a symphony not really a band?
For example, nobody with any sense has ever claimed that a 5-man band that played with a 100 member orchestra became a 105-person band.
