The size and configuration of the F-35 reminds me of the Republic F-105 Thunderchief. Furthermore the two planes fullfill the same tactical roles. The F105 was a gen. 3 fighter; The F-35 is a gen. 5 fighter. How much more powerful than the F-105 is the Joint Strike Fighter?

@MrFalconfly You are right. The F-105 was a Gen. 3 fighter-bomber, the F-16 is Gen. 4, and the F-35 is Gen. 5. The F-35 resembles the F-105 in dimensions and weight, and, of course the F-35 is as far beyond the F-16 as the F-16 was beyond the F-105. In terms of capability, the F-16 is closer the the F-35 and the Falcon has a reputation as a great plane with the pilots who fly it.

It depends what the mission is. In terms of air to air dogfighting the F-22 is better. However, the F-35 is not far behind and both are far ahead of any other potential adversaries. In air to ground F-35 is better and is overall more versatile which is why it's being bought in mass #'s. I can get into specifics if you wish.

no. Nothing, and i mean NOTHING even compares to the f22. Yes, the f35 is the most versatile, and multi role aircraft, but in dogfighting and air to air combat the f22 is like an alien spaceship compared to anything out, or even in production.

That's why we have a ban on the export of the f22 because it is sooooo good.

F22 is better for air to air, not necessairly better for air to ground (don't get me wrong, I think the F22 kicks ass). Lets not forget the Russian prototype PAK FA. It's estimated preformance puts it on par with the raptor. However, those are estimates, which are typically more optimistic than actual preformance. It's safe to assume that the PAK FA will be on par with the f-35 in terms of manuverability, and faster. The F-22 will still be king of the skies, but it can't last forever.

@thugflippin Both have different purposes, the F-35 has the EO DAS system, so it doesn't have to be maneuverable to lock on to targets, it can lock on to anything behind, beside, above, or in front, and even below it. It also is a STOVL. And it will also have a better role in Iraq because it has amazing air-to-ground systems.

The F/A-18 has no internal weapons bays and cannot carry any internal weapons. The F-35 can carry internal and/or external weapons. F-35's weapons payload is significantly greater than F/A-18

Dimensions are slightly bigger than an F-16 or F/A-18, but payload and range are much higher; overall capability will be profoundly superior.

Yes, Thank Goodness Canada is going to replace teh CF-18s. We really need some modern fighter Jets. I hope They Replace the entire flight quickly. 2018 is a while to wait but it will be worth it because the CF-35 will be awesome!

F35 is primarily used for Bombing ground targets. I recommend you check out Fighter Wing by Tom clancy and other sources for this info. It can be used as an Interceptor if need be, Its not totally a one side fighter. Britain already has Eurofighter so it not necessary to be used as an Interceptor. It can be used with the navy. I think this will be its main use for the navy of JSF member nations

It's not suppose to go up against a SU-30 in that it's an attack aircraft and not an air superiority fighter.

Having said that, I think it's stealth capability will allow it to "sneak up" on the enemy aircraft and make the first shot (which probably means game over).

The F-35 has half the EM plot of the F-22. In burner, with a light fuel load, it will perform basically as the F-22 does in military. Full of gas and weapons, it is severely under thrusted and has terrible wingloading, just like the mid-C Viper. Depending on the F-16 and the F-15 you speak of, the Albino is more than a match for the LGPOS, high right, fangs clean, skate the merge.

The F-35 is an advanced interceptor, it is not built simply to execute pretty manouevres in the air.

It probably has better avionics than any plane going around.

Goodnews..this plane is being devoloped to replace the aging F-16 Falcon. The fighters you mentioned are more on par with the F-22. Agility doesn't matter if your enemy can't see you coming! If you'd like to see a real demo of what a thrust vectoring plane can do, look up the Russian Su-37. The F-22 can do the same moves, but you'll never see it in the states. The only problem with these fancy Russian fighters is that they don't have the cash to mass produce them!

The F-35 you saw there was a CGI rendition of our X-35 that flew back in 2001, and is now on display at the Smithsonian Air and Space Annex out near Dulles Airport in Virginia. The movie company added a few things for the excitement and that's cool. But the real thing, although it has only one 25 mm cannon, and doesn't engage targets while hovering (too much of a target), will be awesome. Thanks for watching the video and we'll have lot's more!
