There is a mother 3 gba rom that has been translated into English by fan's available on the worldwide interwebs for free download. It does not continue the same storyline and all the characters are in fact different. The gameplay and graphics are nearly the same and it is a good game. You can play it using a ds with a flash card and ezflash 3+1 slot 2 card for the ds. Nintendo hasn't rereleased the games because there is to much legal b.s. so blame lawyers and regulation not nintendo

Mother 1 was actually translated and edited in English and named Earthbound Zero but not released, it auctioned it off for about $1,000 and was dumped into a ROM, which you can find on Google. I wasn't going to pay $400 for Earthbound and an SNES, so I just ordered the $30 the Mother 1+2 on GBA in Japanese. Mother 1 is OK, but not nearly as good as the sequels, but I would recommend it if you're a hardcore RPG fan.
Nintendo can't release the games in america because they can be sued. There are too many references and similarities to the Beatles. You guys have Yoko Ono to thank for that.
I've actually contacted Nintendo about this issue. They just said that they have no plans to release the games and no information why, but most peoples' guess is that the soundtrack of the games would violate a bunch of copyrights and get Nintendo sued up the ass.

They never released mother in the us because the snes was just about to release and nobody was going to buy a nes game when there is a bigger better system. Because Kirby Super Star sold over a million copies in Japan alone. MOTHER 1+2 and 3 are in Japan, but since EarthBound sold about 1/7th of a million in the US, it's obvious why they wouldn't want to waste their time.
It's not like they don't try weird franchises from Japan now and then. They only seem to do it once though, like Elite Beat Agents. I guess if they aren't an overnight success, they're doomed in a way. That does seem stubborn, but that's why they make the most profit of any publisher out there.

This video is about officially releasing the games in the US so people can play them. Emulators only expose the games to a small percentage of the game's potential audience.
I'm sure I'm not the first to mention this, but Mother 1 has nothing to do with the characters in Earthbound, and the Earthbound characters do nothing more than make a brief cameo appearance in Mother 3.

It agitates me to no end that the general public can't enjoy this trilogy as much as the hardcore fans have by resorting to downloading ROMs to play these magnificent games.
Most people don't know how and/or don't want to download ROMs to play the games--and for very good reason! The series should, as you said, have a mainstream re-release for the Nintendo DS (asking for improved graphics might be a stretch for NoA at this point, but whatever--I find the original graphics charming).
I was willing to pay to get my hands on this game. I recently bought EarthBound in its original packaging with the game guide and scratch n' sniff cards, all for $275. I even bought a SNES to play it on!
Was it worth it? Every penny. But most people aren't familiar enough with the franchise to want to spend that kind of money for a game whose greatness they've only heard about. Why NoA isn't trying to take advantage of the mass profits to be made from its re-release, I'll never know.
I know, there is no way I would ever even consider paying $275 for a game I knew nothing about. I was lucky enough to have bought Earthbound back when it first came out. It really seems like Nintendo just doesn't care enough to give it a try.
The reason Earthbound Zero (MOTHER OFFICIAL TITLE) never made it is because they thought it would be awkward with Earthbound in Japan already out and it would come out the same day as the SNES. Earthbound 2/MOTHER 3 won't be released because Earthbound background music is parodied of American Music so if they release the game, Itoi, Nintendo, and THE ENNTIRE NAME OF MOTHER WILL BE EXECUTED AND OFFICIALLY PUT INTO JAIL. Not to counter what you said or anything, but I think the graphics are part of its artistic genius to be honest. I say this because all the artwork in the games are overly simplified, yet it still manages to evoke all kinds of strong emotions within the player throughout your adventures. Usually, this is a feat that would be easier achieved using tons of visual details, but they manage to accomplish just as much with such simplicity. That's just ingenious by my standards.
Uh your wrong about Mother 1 it's just called MOTHER/EarthBound zero in america, it was released to america but it release date got removed, then an english rlease version on Usenet, and was dumped onto the Internet as a ROM and retitled EarthBound Zero to discern it from its equally named sequel, EarthBound, which was released in Japan as Mother 2: Gyiyg no Gyakushū ("Mother 2: Gyiyg Strikes Back!"). The only way for people to play the game nowadays is to support piracy by downloading ROMs and such, it's a shame that I, who lives in Europe can't experience the game as it should be. Nintendo really need take out their earplugs and listen to what their hardcore gamers really want.

i think so too. and they should be in 3d. i know a lot of people would say, it is a dumb idea, but imagine, how cool and epic this games would be with 3d and wii graphics. i loved the graphic of super mario galaxy and brawl, mother 1-3 could be saw awesome. speaking about brawl, i think the characters should than look like ness and lucas in brawl. that design fits the originals well. i dont think earthbound 64 graphics would be good.
They cause no problems whatsoever. So just for the sake of playing games legitimately you'd want to miss out on some of the best games ever (Mother 3 included) ? In fact, I'm sure the developers of Mother 3 LIKE the fact that its been translated and people are downloading it in the US.
No problem if the games haven't been released here; I don't really have any problems with emulation if the game in question isn't readly available. I'm just saying that I like playing games the way they were meant to be played; on a home console or handheld system from the company (the legitamicy is a nice bonus too).

You're certainly not the only one out there wondering the same thing. Nintendo seems to care less and less about what the fans want. Especially now that the Wii is such a big hit. They can do whatever they want. And judging by the Wii's upcoming game list, what they want is shovelware.
Not releasing Mother 1 was a sound marketing decision on Nintendo's behalf. The super nintendo had just come out and let's face it, Mother 1 was fun and charming, but old and broken at the same time. If it had been released, even with the huge marketing campaign they talked about on LostLevels, it would have been laughed off the shelves.
I think in this age of retro and cult games, though, it fully deserves a place on North American VC.

mother 1 was realesed in america as earthbound zero it is in english and is a red cartridge for NES so if you want to play that one sometimes it is on ebay. FYI all the mother games have no relation to each other they are all different storylines of different characters sure the characters may look the same but it is a different story entirely in all the games

Dude settle down. All the mother games have no connection at least earthbound and mother 3 don't. Do your research and calm yourself. Just get an emulator there is a fan translation for mother 1 [earthbound zero] and mother 3.

Because Kirby Super Star sold over a million copies in Japan alone. MOTHER 1+2 and 3 are in Japan, but since EarthBound sold about 1/7th of a million in the US, it's obvious why they wouldn't want to waste their time.

I don't think it's only the music soundalikes though, i'm sure they'd fix that if it was the only problem.

It's not like they don't try weird franchises from Japan now and then. They only seem to do it once though, like Elite Beat Agents. I guess if they aren't an overnight success, they're doomed in a way. That does seem stubborn, but that's why they make the most profit of any publisher out there.

I'm sure I'm not the first to mention this, but Mother 1 has nothing to do with the characters in Earthbound, and the Earthbound characters do nothing more than make a brief cameo appearance in Mother 3.

It agitates me to no end that the general public can't enjoy this trilogy as much as the hardcore fans have by resorting to downloading ROMs to play these magnificent games.
Most people don't know how and/or don't want to download ROMs to play the games--and for very good reason! The series should, as you said, have a mainstream re-release for the Nintendo DS (asking for improved graphics might be a stretch for NoA at this point, but whatever--I find the original graphics charming).

I was willing to pay to get my hands on this game. I recently bought EarthBound in its original packaging with the game guide and scratch n' sniff cards, all for $275. I even bought a SNES to play it on!
Was it worth it? Every penny. But most people aren't familiar enough with the franchise to want to spend that kind of money for a game whose greatness they've only heard about. Why NoA isn't trying to take advantage of the mass profits to be made from its re-release, I'll never know.

I know, there is no way I would ever even consider paying $275 for a game I knew nothing about. I was lucky enough to have bought Earthbound back when it first came out. It really seems like Nintendo just doesn't care enough to give it a try.

The reason Earthbound Zero (MOTHER OFFICIAL TITLE) never made it is because they thought it would be awkward with Earthbound in Japan already out and it would come out the same day as the SNES. Earthbound 2/MOTHER 3 won't be released because Earthbound background music is parodied of American Music so if they release the game, Itoi, Nintendo, and THE ENNTIRE NAME OF MOTHER WILL BE EXECUTED AND OFFICIALLY PUT INTO JAIL. Not to counter what you said or anything, but I think the graphics are part of its artistic genius to be honest. I say this because all the artwork in the games are overly simplified, yet it still manages to evoke all kinds of strong emotions within the player throughout your adventures. Usually, this is a feat that would be easier achieved using tons of visual details, but they manage to accomplish just as much with such simplicity. That's just ingenious by my standards.

Uh your wrong about Mother 1 it's just called MOTHER/EarthBound zero in america, it was released to america but it release date got removed, then an english rlease version on Usenet, and was dumped onto the Internet as a ROM and retitled EarthBound Zero to discern it from its equally named sequel, EarthBound, which was released in Japan as Mother 2: Gyiyg no Gyakushū ("Mother 2: Gyiyg Strikes Back!"). I can understand why Mother 1 and Mother 3 were not released in America, but what I can't understand is why any or all of the trilogy's games are not on the Wii Virtual Console. Copyright, I guess, but that can be worked around on.

The only way for people to play the game nowadays is to support piracy by downloading ROMs and such, it's a shame that I, who lives in Europe can't experience the game as it should be. Nintendo really need take out their earplugs and listen to what their hardcore gamers really want.

i think so too. and they should be in 3d. i know a lot of people would say, it is a dumb idea, but imagine, how cool and epic this games would be with 3d and wii graphics. i loved the graphic of super mario galaxy and brawl, mother 1-3 could be saw awesome. speaking about brawl, i think the characters should than look like ness and lucas in brawl. that design fits the originals well. i dont think earthbound 64 graphics would be good.

No problem if the games haven't been released here; I don't really have any problems with emulation if the game in question isn't readly available. I'm just saying that I like playing games the way they were meant to be played; on a home console or handheld system from the company (the legitamicy is a nice bonus too).

Not releasing Mother 1 was a sound marketing decision on Nintendo's behalf. The super nintendo had just come out and let's face it, Mother 1 was fun and charming, but old and broken at the same time. If it had been released, even with the huge marketing campaign they talked about on LostLevels, it would have been laughed off the shelves.
I think in this age of retro and cult games, though, it fully deserves a place on North American VC.

mother 1 was realesed in america as earthbound zero it is in english and is a red cartridge for NES so if you want to play that one sometimes it is on ebay. FYI all the mother games have no relation to each other they are all different storylines of different characters sure the characters may look the same but it is a different story entirely in all the games
