Amazing to watch. I filmed one going from caterpillar to chrysalis - hope to catch it emerging in a week or so. Does everybody have to go to the nursery twice a week for more milkweed like we do when a new batch hatches?
@OrtegaALOHAS - With "alohas" in your name, are you in Hawaii? If so, you need Crown Flower, which if you scout your neighborhood you might find a supply that you can tap. I'm trying to grow my own, and it is finally taking hold. One of my clippings comes from Washington Place and probably was planted for Queen Liliuokalani when she lived there (Crown Flower was her favorite).
@legomovie1024 - It is indeed a Monarch butterfly. The dots on its wings indicate that it is male. This video has been posted for almost four years now. I have raised and released hundreds of Monarchs since then.
@gergnesdunk I bought my kids the butterfly garden and the coocon fell in the cup. Will it still turn into a butterfly? The net on top for them has holes in it. It's hard for them to stay on it.
@linerd5757 - If there's still a short stem on the top of the chrysalis, you can tie some thread around it and hang it or use an alligator clip and devise some way to suspend it vertically until the butterfly emerges. The short fall should not hurt it, but handle the chrysalis carefully.
My little sister and I found a Monarch kittypillar and decided: "Why not put it in the butterfly house?" We did this a while ago, and how the chrysalis is black, almost completely clear. Now I'm excited to see this in real life.
I had a chrysalis on a twig that was sitting at an angle in a jar. When the butterfly emerged, one wing came out but the other appeared to be stuck in the chrysalis. I didn't think I should help it, so I left it alone, but it never did get it out. The first wing stayed crumpled up and the butterfly ended up dying. Is it because the stick it was hanging on was not horizontal? Does it need the help of gravity to get out of the chrysalis properly?
@penneymaried I've also seen a few like that among those I raised and in the wild. While I'm sure gravity does help, I also think that sometimes a part of this miraculous process sometimes just doesn't go right. Before I knew anything, the first chrysalis I observed emerged on a bed of cotton and survived. I would never do that again, as they need to be suspended to unfold their wings and dry them. I've also tried to intervene, but I'm afraid in most cases the developmental damage was too much.
@gergnesdunk Thank you for answering my question. I have 2 more chrysalises now, but I'm a little worried that they may not have eaten enough. I had a hard time finding enough milkweed for them. They are very small. They are both on the outside of glass jars. I hope they make it.
This is a beautiful video and the song choices are perfect. Some of the kids' comments on here show their lack of classic music knowledge. I'm sharing this with my BF who is currently raising his first monarch. Thank you for a lovely composition.
Well it looks like you ended up reaching the goal number of 50,000 views. However I think the music to the video could have been some what more graceful.
i found his fuzzy black caterpiller while i was walking and we brung it home and now its in some kind of cocoon but im not sure if its a cocoon or what kind of butterfly it is can you please give me some types of butterflies or moths that it could turn into pleasee
Beautiful video! I turned the music down, although I like that kind of music, it seemed to detract form the drama of the emergence. Was the butterfly missing a set of legs? It looks like she only has four?
Wow - incredible stuff! We were in Mexico earlier this year to film them in the forests there. We were engulfed by millions of them as they were everywhere!
I've seen a Painted Lady Butterfly hatch from its chrysalis before, and it also had a plump body and small wings. The body wasn't as plump as a monarch, though, and I got to see how it expanded its wings as well. Plus, the chrysalis was too close to the ground so it had to crawl to another vertical surface to rest on and dry its wings.
You can find their caterpillars living and feeding on milkweed plants. You also need a supply of milkweek (or crown flower in Hawaii) if you want to raise one. Check some of the related videos to see the amazing lifecycle of the Monarch. Aloha, Greg Knudsen
Very observant! For those who don't know how to determine the sex of a Monarch, it's the black dots on the lower wings. They're first evident around 3:38-52, and especially from about 4:10-28. If there are dots, it's a boy. Aloha, Greg Knudsen (gergnesdunk)
How helpful! Beautiful video. 'Growing' a few butterflies for my 20 month old granddaughter. Now at chrysalis stage - wonder of wonders! I'll keep it up each year for both our sakes :)
Hi! Hey, I am trying to collect some "metamorphosis" footage for a music video. Would you allow us to use some of your video for it? Naturally, you would be credited for the video that we use. Please let me know. I would certainly allow you to hear the song and decide if it works for you... let me know, I will send you what we have in mind for your approval. Thanks for your attention!
My 2 year-old daughter is obsessed with butterflies, cocoons, and caterpillars. You should know that this brings a bit of joy into her life... especially when the butterfly frees itself. At that moment, my daughter will throw her arms in the air and shout "she did it"!!
when he goes to the top of the stick he is like I am free!!!

because it takes couple minutes for the wings to be pumped. Do you see the big baloon at its rear? It will deflate as the wings expand.
