Actually it seems quite weird to me that people feel the need to separate "this" music from "that" music, and to "side" either with Bowie, or with Reznor. I personally like both Bowie and Kate Bush, as well as Nine Inch Nails. I don't see any contradictions in it.

If you think that anyone of them (I guess, you mean't Bowie) hasn't earned your respect with all that they've done so far, then you'll never have respect for them. Probably there was some exploiting going on, but not quite as much as you think. But I know quite well that Bowie could be like that, although he is my all time favourite musician. Bowie "exploited" NIN by going on tour with them in order to better present his own new project. Reznor invited him, though, not the other way round.

If we talk about music an musical influences, Bowie has always been like that - he's taken things from other musicians and other art forms that he liked, and made something of his own out of it all. In this case the music that Bowie liked at that moment was what NIN was playing, so there was an influence of that in his music.
