This video show why the japanes to face death with naturalness. Today, before catastrophic natural & ante - natural incidents for there. This was in TV every day...
Just watching this again after the "Mt. Fuji in Red" Dream-- the one with the exploding nuclear power plants. This one is a good antidote to the current crisis. When the film came out this reminded me of Masanobu Fuoka who gave up chemical farming in 1938 to go organic. I remember hoping the buildings in Kurosawa's sets used natural materials... and that the flowers were all real...it is hard to tell... and that if only the film developing process used Ocean Arks style water remediation!

The pant the old guy is wearing seem very cool.Is it lycra or what? Looks like cotton..inappropriate question but I had to ask it somewhere.Thank to anyone who answers in advance!
the music is awesome,i remember i was a child when i saw this movie and i cried while watching the scene by the sublime beauty expressed, the life cycle, the love for what is alive and death seen as a natural process that grants the continuity.
The name of the place (village) is Daiō Wasabi Farm (大王わさび農場) located in Azumino, Nagano Prefecture and known for its beautiful watermills. Definitely one of the places I want to visit in the future.
so, in the end, the question is what is Kurosawa saying here? Is this final episode just a dream, something that we can imagine in our minds but never grasp in reality? It's interesting that the village has "no name" as if it exist in an alternate reality. If Kurosawa intended this episode to be a solution to anything doesn't strike me as being entirely honest with the audience, in spite of the beauty of the imagery and music. Only if Kurosawa had lived like the old man, which I doubt.
@christomacin you shoul´nt think to much. whatever it is - whta did youl feel, when you saw it? to me, it´s one of the most touching end´s in filmhistory. it´s so quiet there in the village with no name. could you hear the silence inbetween? the beauty of nature, the beauty of flowers and the water: symbol of life. and right there the funeral - the circle of life is completed. that´s what kurosawa wanted to tell us i guess...
The music from the funeral procession may be a traditional Japanese march, or it may have been written by the film's composer Shinichirô Ikebe. The Russian composer you are thinking of was Nikolai Ippolitiov-Ivanov. However, his music appears in the film's end credits. The name of that piece is Caucasian Sketches No. 1. It's from the first movement entitled "In a Village".
My father showed me this and said he wanted his funeral to be like this. By the look on my mother's face, I knew it was not to be. To this day, I miss my dad gone these long ten years now. Whereever his spirit is, I send good thoughts this Father's day. Blees you, Dad, and thank you for giving me such a world full of wonders.
i saw this movie almost 20 years ago when it came out in germany. i was so deeply moved by the end of kurosawas drems. know i found it here again and your word´s and this clip brings all of my sadness and brightness back. yes, i wish there would be a village out there in this world. i´d like to spent the rest of my life and then die and hope to see a funeral like this one. here the circle of life is fullfilled.
@HappyCat1960 Your father had beautiful ideas or should I say dreams about the way he wanted to go out.You wanted to fulfill his wishes and you were a good son.It just was'nt to happen because some people are too religious especially women.Generally eastern cultures celebrate death as it is a liberation from our world to a better 1 This procession in Bali is an example

It's a little funny that he says that the people of the village live "to a ripe old age" when, in fact, people living a "natural" lifestyle of agricultural toil would likely live only into their 40's or 50's.
I think that we people of the modern world forget what a harsh and unpleasant life pre-industrial society can be. We like to romanticize the old ways.
But as the old man says - we believe that life is hard when it is just good to be alive. A more Taoist attitude as compared to the more accepted Confucius way.
THE BEST DIRECTOR OF ALL TIME!!!! Akira Kurosawa made films that will live forever! Seven Samurai his best ever!!! This ones is a dream to look at! Enjoy life through a film!
Truly beautiful and masterful film making by the greatest director of all time, the depth and subtlety of this last dream is truly profound. As we see in his earlier dream of the very common theme of a post apocalyptic japan, he here ends it with his vision of the harmony that is to proceed. Notice how the costume and music creates a blend of many cultures, symbolic of the unification and harmony that can proceed great disaster. these i think are more than dreams, they are visions.
Real sense of the death. Akira can look this and show us on his dreams make on true in this movie. My favourite movie. For think, use our brain. Final always make me cry ´cos is amazing. Thank's to upload it. Regards.
I have no idea where the music for the village funeral comes from. Maybe it was written for this film(?). But the symphonic music at the end is NOT Borodin. It's from Caucasian Sketches, by Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov, a really great Soviet-era recording of it conducted by Vladimir Fedoseyev.
what is the classical piece at the end please?
