We used to get 'Sparrow Hawks' in our garden back in Sweden, they used the fact that we fed the birds in winter to come down and grab some on occasion.. but we could not stop feeding the smaller birds, or they would die in even greater numbers than the Hawk could ever catch! My mother never liked the Hawks though.. :)
Me too! We took a direct hit from Ivan 4 years ago. It was a cat 3 when it made landfall & still a strong cat 2 when it came through here. We're lucky that it only took out a few trees. Hurricanes are a powerful force.
I had to take my feeders down. Having a mouse invasion. Atleast the hawk got one for us. Usually they don't go for the songbirds here. The mice must taste better.lol Also we'll be moving in a few weeks. The animals will have to move on too. More on that later!
I thought it was too, that's why I went to chack it out as soon as it flew up into the tree. It was a beetle indeed. A staple in the diet of this species. It's a redshouldered hawk, according to someone who knows more than I about them.
Actually it's a young red shouldered hawk. How beautiful!! I'm glad to see he's an accomplished hunter. At my other house my snakes didn't always get to eat because if I saw a hawk, I'd put the mouse out for him instead. I've had some wonderful experiences with hawks. Luckily redshoulders mostly feed on little mammals, bugs and reptiles and not so much birds. They've been good to leave my pigeons alone. The Cooper is the bird killer.
Thanks for the ID, I was going to mention that as a possibility also, just forgot.lol I have filmed the adult Reds before but this is the first time I've seen one this young. Was a pleasure to watch it hunt & to film it! I hope you & the budgies are well.:)
great vid. interesting, i have never seen hawks in my yard. i hike up to a place called 'eagle's bluff' and i saw them on the wing. i wish that i could go back up there it is very beautiful. it is a huge rock that sticks out of the side of a mountain. on a clear day you can see forever. lol i actually worked there cutting trails when i was younger. (((hugs))) :)
Thanks so much for watching. I've seen quite a few of them this year. Also had a family of owls hunting here at night, but too dark to film.:( The parents would bring the babies & teach them to hunt, was sooo cool!
No but not far away. We actually live noth of Mobile, Al. But this area did take a blow from the storm. Too close for comfort though, we're all fine, only lost a trash can.:)
Interesting video with all the information you give Stardust:) Thanks for even showing what the hawk dined on ( beetle). Please do keep us posted on what the hawk is upto later.
Thank you for transmit this nice report.

Hi! Thanks for watching. If it comes back, I'll film it.lol
I had to see for myself what it had eaten, the biologist in me I guess. The mouse was obvious though. It was a very large beetle too!
Take care, peace.
