My GSDs won't go near water - but cooperate with baths in the tub because they are trained to. They would no more play in a lake than drink it dry! Wonder why... we rescued them.. perhaps they have history with water - we tried a kiddie pool but no thanks from them.
go own a boat. bring your GSD. Put their collar on. GENTLY(DONT THROW THEM) put them in the lake. You may have to toss them. they will come back to you everytime even though they may not like it at first. Do this when they are young because it is alot easier and they will like water too. They will also build trust in you because everytime you pick them up back into the boat, you establish a connection. I wish i hadnt got rid of my boat. I know my dog loved it as he got used to it.
nice i currently got a herman shepherd dog her name is sasha shes 6 weeks old and her training has begun as of today ha the hardest part i think would be leash walking
If you feed them up well, you never have to put them on the leash
I have a 5 year old german shepherd now
And i walk with him every day and i cant remember when the last time was i leashed him
If i say stop, or hold on he will wait, if i say go on he will go, if i say in the grass he does that, etc etc, they can learn alot and listen very well ;)
My GSD is never, has never, and will never be off the leash and out of my control for any reason. Reason being, on September 19th, 2004, I had to watch, from beginning to end, a beautiful golden retriever get hit by a car right in front of me, because she was off the leash. My GSD was a little puppy then, and when I got back home I promised him then that I would always watch out for his well-being every moment we're outside. And letting him roam unleashed would be breaking my promise to him.
I dunno about being scared. About the worst thing to happen is having to catch him when he suddenly bolts after a cat - while still remaining on both feet. That's why I have the leash in both hands and I'm always on my guard when I walk him - because the unexpected can happen.
Twilight - no disrespect to you, but if you took the time to train your dog properly, there should be no issues off of a leash. My brother has a 3 year old GSD and will walk beside him in heavily populated places without a leash. He still leashes it out of respect for others, since people are sometimes intimidated. His dog doesn't bolt after cats, squirrels or anything off a leash, and only because he took the time to train it. You may consider the same or you will do your dog a disservice
Eh, mine's only socialization came from a long-haired Rottweiler thing that wanted to tear my little puppy's head off whenever it saw him. I've taken the time to train my dog in commands that my dog needs to know. My dog is fine around people. He just has major issues with cats. I guess he's the only dog on the planet who chases cats. :(
@TwilightZeaux Ya. Over the river and through the woods, chasing the cat he goes. Thats what happened everytime my GSD saw my cat. They wont chase them unless the cat runs though. if the cat stays still usually the GSD will just stick their nose all over them.
I showed this video to my girlfriend and she asked me when did I take my dog to the lake and who is that girl throwing things in the lake! lmao, she thought that was my dog too.

all my shepherds have just been waders. Usually not much of a water loving breed. This one here is like a retriever in the water.
