I would love to see David Thewlis do something as gritty and disturbing as this once more. Playing Lupin in the Harry Potter movies is all very nice, but his portrayal of Johnny in this film... it's unparalleled!
one of the best, if not THE best film i have ever seen in my life. everytime i watch 'naked' it makes me very thoughtful about my life, about life in general. it's difficult to forget Mike Leigh's characters.. brilliant, just brilliant.
I think whats great about films like this that are so great. Is that you can interpret them anyway you want and still be completely right in your findings.
Brilliant movie. Johnnies character is hard to fathom sometimes. Seems to me his pride, arrogance and disdain are too much of a wall between him and finding some happiness, or letting anyone get close to him. Mike leigh is a great director. This is a towering performance by thewlis, I think either he or the movie won at Cannes.
One of the greatest movies I've seen so far. And the music is just wonderful! I've been looking for the soundtracks of this film but with no succes. Does somebody have an idea where I can get them?
Working jobs we hate to buy things we dont really need in a relationship that aint going no where or living from day to day going from place to place, where life is a true adventure :)
I disagree, I saw the movie yesterday and I really loved it. I loved the ending too. When it seemed he began giving in to the decent lifestyle thing, and not being true to himself I got kinda sad. When he limped into his world again it made a lot more sence to me..
When I first saw Naked, I thought it was nothing more than a self-indulgent rant. Watched it again last night and I can proudly say that I was 100% wrong. Despite the anger and negativity, it's full of humor, warmth and poignance. And the fact of the matter is that David Thewlis gives one of the best performances ever filmed. How he wasn't nominated for an Oscar is beyond me; just goes to show you how silly those things are.
I so loved this film and the ending was so cool, but i so wanted to know what Johnny did after this.Naked 2,no i don't think so,it would not work an all.I would still love to know what happened to him tho :)
@MuseumofMemory I wouldn't say that. Insofar as this film explicates the horrors of Thacherian England, one has to remember - eventually Thacher left office. It's easy to forget that this film isn't solely a character study of Johnny, but an exposé on the widespread destitution manifest in England during Thacher's reign, which was particularly felt by the poor and unemployed; hence the contrast with Jeremy, the hedonistic yuppie. That's just my opinion, though.
@taylorguy72 What do you think happened to johnny? The same. He went on and on in the same cycle. Remember when the girl told him how old he looked earlier in the film? "About forty." "I'm twenty-seven" and she didn't believe him? Johnny doesn't have long to live, I think. But something in him keeps him living this way.
Maybe he did go back to Manc, he only left because he was on the run.
Masterpiece movie. Extremly ambigious. I mean at first I hated the protagonist to death. Later I just felt pity for him and his genious mind. He's become a frustrated intellectual maniac. One extremly tragic character. Am hunting down this flick still, haven't found y damn copy in all the years. DAMN!

Depends on your perspective of a decent life.

Clearly this wasn't the uplifting happy end sort of film, but you do feel bad that he blew his chance at a decent lifestyle.
