And I saw Satan at Dr. Rockets Blues bar in Corpus Christi Tx. He was Black and he wore a Red Beret on his head and had a Evil smirk on his face that was ALL KNOWING! He grinned thru the plate glass window as I sat inside and drank. I could actually feel my soul leaving my body with each sip as his evil grin got wider and wider then bust into an ear to ear grin then a laugh that I could hear in my "Inner Ear" despite the loud band that played only a few feet away Turn or Burn Brothers! John 3:16
First came in touch with the CB in LA right after the SCLC voter registration drive in early '60s, before they were "psychedelicized" -- and then again in the post '60s in a NYC West village cafe (with Richie Haven in the audience) -- always always a favorite ...
wildclearing, how awesome it is to hear from someone on here who actually expierenced that. My mom was a bit of an L.A. scenster in the '60s, going to The Whisky-A-Go-Go, Ciros, etc. but that was when she was seeing The Yardbirds, The Leaves, and The Byrds. You didn't get to see Jimmy James and The Blue Flames when you were in the village did you?
This is REAL black music, it's absolutely fantastic. Real soul, real emotion, real harmonies. This is what white AND black could dig on back then. Now who the hell wants to hear about "goin' to da club, livin' like a thug?" Man, we lost our way that's for dang sure! Alot of those rappers we hear nowadays sure as heck ain't gonna be boarding THIS TRAIN when it comes a-callin'!
Thanks MadHatter for the thoughtful comment...I am with you in spirit...but the problem is also the demand of the consumers these days..they wouldn't recognize the beauty of this if they saw it...AND..some of the rappers have an understanding of old school...and do good things with their cash...they will board THE TRAIN...in fact..they are already on it! God bless!
We would go see them in clubs in downtown Brooklyn in 1967 and they were amazing...and I never forgot this song ,first hearing them play it...beautiful gospel.
Saw them also in '68 at Penn State University. Unfortunately I was so stoned for the show, I spaced out quite a bit of it. I do remember they were great though! Thank you.
I remember seeing them sing this great song in Central Park, NYC summer of 68. They lived down the block from me on West 76th St near Columbus Ave. Friendly cats. I remember them having really big afros so this might be a year earlier or so, 67?
I was a roadie for the Chambers when they toured with Alice Cooper and Blue Oyster Cult...best dudes you could ever know...hardest work and most fun I ever had except when Alice's boa constrictor got loose backstage...that was a pain in the ass.
I once had a Chambers Brothers Cassette tape that survived an explosion when a tank ran over a mine in Viet Nam. It has since quit working. They were an awesome band!
Now this is true family; blessed with awesome talent and beauty. Connie, you have and will always be in my heart and will forever remain there no matter how far apart we are. BFF I LOVE YOU MORE THAN YOU'LL EVER KNOW. MUAH----XOXOX YOLI
I was a roadie with the Chambers in the early 70's on a tour with Alice Cooper and Blue Oyster Cult...hardest and most enjoyable job I ever had....don't ask...wish I was 22 again.
I remember laying in bed with a transistor radio-must have been about 9 or 10 years oldl-listening to the start of "heavy, psychedelic" whatever it was-and The Chambers Brothers had "Time has Come Today". But my God, on this rare clip of them doing People Get Ready-their true roots are fully exposed. Black vocalists singing together like this....typifies what happens when things are on......for those great black groups. And, the white drummer is a nice touch, don't ya think?
Not long ago after listening to "Bridge over troubled waters" by S&G I remarked in a post about a black pianist's opening bars and I said something to the effect that I wish the whole song was done in (black) Southern Gospel style. How people got offended by that I will never understand. Only a choir of (black)angels could have done it better. and I guess someone will be offended by the comment of "(black)angels" too.
Let's get down with the real sound. The Chambers Bros aim at the heart of Soul... and they don't miss. God bless them yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Thank you guys.
WOW if this is #24 on The Rolling Stone List, they got it down. I would hate to have to find the top 100 great songs, but this sure is a 'stunner.' Thanks for posting the fabulous take.
Back in '65 I saw them in person in NYC performing "People Get Ready". The song moved me then as it does now. As nice as being in the hall might be...The Men, Songs, Lyrics, and who they are today is what's really important.
If you want to honor them...always think about the song "People Get Ready"..let your actions define who you are and then you'll never have to wonder about being "Ready"!
recs to your comment. This band created one of the best rock songs of all time.(time has come today ) They should have at least some kind of honorable mention in the hall.
G-d Bless Your Heart !!! I am the late drummer's gf. It is my fondest wish that they be honored by the r 'n r hall of fame but bdoubt i will live to see that happen.
Hey anybdy know about Youtube copyright claim,I just got one for using my own uncles music, not that they would know they're my uncles but it just seems silly...

I saw these guys live a couple of times in NYC when I first moved there from Boston. Those were the great days of Fillmore East and Fillmore West. I loved their authentic sound, their genuine soul and their unflagging sincerity. They were part of the "moment" that gave us the unforgettable music of the 60's. Bless these brothers for helping us to feel good and think right.

this is old school gospel.. some similar chord progressions and time signatures can be used in country music..also where the country/gospel genre comes in
In this video the Chambers Brothers are dressed the way they were when I saw them play in January 1968. A month before they'd worn the matching suits shown on the "Time Has Come Today" album cover.
The January show was one of those rip-the roof-off performances.
Actually, my Grandfather was one that didn't sing, not Doug. My Grandfather was a preacher. His name was Major Chambers. From what I also understand he taught them all how to play the instruments that they do play. IDK if my Grand dad or Doug was older. I have to ask my mom that.
I just saw Lester Chambers...last night at Cafe La Paz in Berkeley joining a young girl doing an opening country folk act that opening for ramblin jack Eliot and Country Joe McDonald..(Give me an F) . He was super charming...goofed a bit on the harmonica and finally settled in as a backup vocalist, where he really laid it down, in a very gentle sweet way. What a great night. If you don't know rambin' jack, he tutored under Woody Guthrie, and hung deep with Dillon and Cash. Wonderful.
40 years ago MLK JR was slain. Look at all the changes that have taken place, especially today in South Carolina where a record breaking number of African/Americans went out to vote and 55% of all voters choose Barack Obama.
Brian used to tell me what it was like being white and traveling through The Deep South back then with The Bros. There was a business associate on a trip, a woman, who had a thing for one of the bros. and she was exiting the hotel arm in arm with him, totally oblivious to any danger, and Brian took her by the other arm and led her away with him after spotting some GOB's in pickups eying them w/mean looks. I believe we have made movement forward but so much more is needed from all ends.
this is phenomenal... lester chambers sings as naturally as we all breathe... i dig this one more than all of ther versions i've heard, even the original
Thank you for posting this...You just made my year. Truly,...listening to this brought tears to my eyes...which I think is what Gospel Blues is all about! Get to the heart of the matter. Outstanding! I listened to all other versions...this is the "One"! Thanks Spindle! Bill in Atl.
one of those life changing expierances was standing the rain at the sqamish ten feet from the stage, wit those harmonys and you know it quit raining while they where on . and they where always on everytime I saw them.. Atotally physicadelic band
This was the flip side of the "Time has come today" 45 when it was first released. I was absolutely blown away by the harmony's and it remains a favorite with me 40 years later.Glad I came across it on You tube....a great site!
I had the fortune to see these men in person at the Unicorn in Boston and the Club 47 in Cambridge in the 60's. At the time there was nothing like them. Thier vocals and harmony were unbeatable. They would literally send a chill down your spine or exhilariate or both. I believe this period, befere "Time Has Come" were some of their best. Marvelous group.
I had the pleasure to see them performing this song on Live TV, approximately the summer of 65-66. It's the same video that your watching. It makes me want to puke when I see the fools spitting out crap called rap a-dap, when they could be using their talent doing something like what the above "Brothers" are doing.
i haerd this song today on a skate video od enough, Toy machine's Good and Evil. i was instantly struck dumb with love for this song. i went here to you tube to hear it and sure enoug it was here. this is my favorite version out of the five i've listened too.
I have heard so much about them performing on tv, but I have never seen it. I have a few of their albums in my possession, so now I have to go back and listen with a new ear. Great stuff here!
This is awesome!! The last time I saw this I was really really little, and I was like "hey, that's my daddy on tv" My dad is George, the bass player. The rest are my uncles, of course! I'm so proud to be part of this family. - Kim
Thank you so very much for posting this. I am in tears. I have so few videos where I can see ( the drummer ) Brian's precious face. He passed in 1985... but I still feel him near.
After purchasing a Columbia 45 of "Time Has Come Today" many years ago (which I loved), I flipped the record over and found this. By the time they got to the end, I was in tears. It still moves me that much today (although I truly wish the end hadn't been cut off.)Thank you so much for finding and posting this performance by them.
MAN WHY IS THAT ENDING CUT OFF?!?! THAT'S THE VERY PART THAT BRINGS ME TO TEARS! Love these guys, this song, and this album! How did we go from this to rap music people....HOW?!
man...what harmony.....like to jam this whole cd "time has come today" in my garage on a sunny saturday afternoon...neighbors love it too!!! WHAT A BAND!!!!!
This group mellowed every concert in the 1960's from the so called rock and roll kids and made them think a bit on what they were playing and almost everyone started to play a gospel tune on one kind or another even if it was just amazing grace. We have nothing remotely similar in todays machine driven music. Thanks Chambers Brothers for what you gave us. We will always remember you. Bless the cat
My favorite cover of this song too. I'm sure Mayfield
was happy with it, also. I almost puked when Rod Stewart and Jeff Beck did it for MTv in the 80's. They both have soul, but not enough to do this song justice.
Curtis had to have loved this version. Only two versions of this song move me to tears: The Impressions' original, and this one by the Chambers Brothers.
Look at the Chambers Brothers all slick and cityfied. This was only a prelude to the folk, rock, funk, persona to later come. I loved their soulful, earthyness. They are one of the unsung heros of the Woodstock era.
what are the brothers are doing now?

I just saw Lester Chambers...last night at Cafe La Paz in Berkeley joining a young girl doing an opening country folk act that opening for ramblin jack Eliot and Country Joe McDonald..(Give me an F) . He was super charming...goofed a bit on the harmonica and finally settled in as a backup vocalist, where he really laid it down, in a very gentle sweet way. What a great night. If you don't know rambin' jack, he tutored under Woody Guthrie, and hung deep with Dillon and Cash. Wonderful.

wow, that's good to hear that Uncle Lester is still out there doing his thing!

This was the flip side of the "Time has come today" 45 when it was first released. I was absolutely blown away by the harmony's and it remains a favorite with me 40 years later.Glad I came across it on You tube....a great site!

He WAS the only "white" drummer. He is now in drummer heaven, for he passed away 20 years ago.

i find is kind of ironic the only white dude in the chambers brother is the drummer.

G-d bless you.

Man do I love this song, one of my "crying" songs no doubt. But why oh why did the ending chop off like that...I was waiting for that part!
MattHatter 4 years ago
