After many years of going to shows, seeing more bands live than I can remember, and over ten years working in the music industry in the 80s and 90s, I have still never come across a more talented, more original, and more FUN band than Oingo Boingo. Going to concerts was fun, but going to Boingo concerts was an experience of it's own! We miss you guys!
@killthekraken Look into the band "Dead Man's Party." I saw them in Orange County, CA two nights ago. The greatest O.B. tribute band. They played well over two hours. It's the closest you'll get to O.B. now. They even have one of the two balaphones from this video.
@killthekraken I know the feeling! My friends and I always went to their show in the OC on Halloween.....still have a sweat shirt that has never been worn!
This song was a response to record labels in Los Angeles who said that Boingo's music was too complex for the kids to understand. In fact, it was the kids who discovered them and made them popular. They weren't part of any fad, and didn't have the support of the LA Times or any press for that matter.
@elfojuice boy did you say a mouthful and Danny is one of the most talented people of our generation i was one of those kids that loved oingo boingo and i have followed his music ever since pure talent and a very gifted musician.
I really need a time machine. I'm 14, and all I listen to is stuff from the 70's and 80's. What happened to good music? What happened to having lyrical depth? WHAT HAPPENED?!
@InBetweenAreDoors Sorry. Musically, it was amazing being your age in the early 80's. I was your age when I went to my first Boingo concert. How cool it was to watch freaks with brass and woods electric - real artists! Now the crap that is created is based on mathematical algorithms to sell to the masses. But they cannot touch the human cord that is people who look for excellence. BTW MTV was incredible then and Elfman is a hessian god.
I saw them live and it absolutely amazed me how AWESOME they sounded. Danny's voice s an instrument onto itself. Classic Boingo through a good set of headphones... HEAVEN.
I may have been born in 91, but I've still gone to 3 Boingo concerts :D I only remember 2 of them though cause for my first one my mom was still pregnant with me XD
That's right, kids. Before Autotune, bands could give fantastic live performances by actually singing and playing instruments well. Plus, their music had a message! Amazing to think how entertainment has (d)evolved since then.
@pjrg1919 i yam a kkid todahy an fuk u,juuuusztim beirbur ann britney isz good, thiz oiuingo boingo suckks,an i waz gonn a sa ahh blnbbahh,urg,oop,oop,oogabooa,,,.dsjjfgkgkg.nir3
@espiga1 damn, I am jealous that you got to see those performances. I saw every show in SLC (their 2nd favorite tour location outside of LA), but their farewell show. Amazing fun band that was so highly underrated.
Grey matter is the unmyelinated tissue nerves and composes most of the brain tissue. Because it is unmyelinated it means that the neurons do not have nodes for the electrical impulses to jump which allows the impluse to transmit faster than an unmyelinated neuron can. Ex; a infant still has a lot of myelination in the body to occur, so that is why thier movements are uncoordinated and jerky. Bet you didn't expect a science lesson with your music, did you? XD
I saw them at First Avenue in Minneapolis probably about this time... don't know the date this was recorded... but they were ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!! Wish I had had the opportunity to have seen them more. Clever lyrics, Fantastic instrumentations. Wish they would reform. If you haven't, check out the Burton Willy Wonka film... you can so see Boingo influences in that soundtrack - more than any other Elfman ones that I've heard.
even though oingo boingo isnt making music anymore, danny elfman still is! check out the anniversary music box he is releasing with tim burton, theres going to be a ton of exclusive oingo boingo content on there
@screamolives I like how he has the fake disclaimer like that. "Like me:" is a way to diffuse a strong statement. Him doing so when the audience knows better is a little stronger that the diffusion's' perceived softening.
Geez....I really hope technology becomes so advanced within my lifetime that a time machine is produced, because I would so use one to see Oingo Boingo's shows over and over again
Wow...I have to say this is awesome, I was curious about Oingo Boingo for so long, and at fist I heard stuff like "Little Girls" and "Only a Lad" and thought, this Danny Elfman guy is twisted. But I gave the music a chance and realized fact those songs have underlying meanings and are BRILLIANTLY written. Not to mention the band being so TIGHT, like in this video. Jeez, I was just a kid when they were touring, wish I could have seen them.
I cherish the times I was able to see these guys live. I'm pretty sure I was at this gig, and I'm pretty sure that it was called a Rhumbaphone. One of my first "vinyl" purchases was the 4 song EP of Only a Lad as advised to me via radio by Jud The Fish of KROQ 106.7 in SoCal. That station has been sucking lately...anyway, I'm glad so many people still enjoy.
From time to time I start to take for granted how awesome Boingo was. But honestly, they were bloody AMAZING. And this performance is proof. No one rocks the balophone like Elfman and Avila!!! xD
I saw them in 1984 at the Del Mar Fair w/ Joe Buselt and Rhonda Salvastrini. So killer!!! Last day of school, 9th grade, Chula Vista High School. I lived it and loved it. Even rode the bumper boats with RIBS....
@FTroop37F They're all doing stuff on their own now. Danny Elfman is a film composer(and has also written a symphony and a ballet), Steve Bartek is also a composer and orchestrator, and John Avila is a music producer, and still performs live shows with various other bands. Not sure about the rest.
It's safe to say that they're all doing pretty well, though. Boingo must've been good for them. :)
OK. . .now I'm really dating myself. The first song I ever heard was "You Got Your Baby Back" by the Mystic Nights of the Oingo Boingo sometime in the mid 70s.
We were listening to Led Zeppelin, The Who and the Rolling Stones at the time and these guys came out with this new, different sound.... amazing.
I love the xylophone and percussion in this song. The lyrics are great too. They had a big band with a large brass section at times too. I saw them at the Roxy in Hollywood.
Where are bands like this today? Danny... I know that you're busy but do this again man!
I had no idea prior to Agent24 mentioning that a week ago. I know that Danny's scoring every freaking thing in Hollywood these days. That's even more impressive since he suffers from acute hearing loss.
Danny...Still... Throw on some high quality ear protection, call everybody up and play at the Greek Theatre next summer dammit :)
I saw them live on New Years eve early 90's. Very small club. Danny wore camo fatigues and Doc Martens, Johnny Vatos in nothing but a diaper (NY's baby.) People stage diving and moshing everywhere. Also saw their very last show in Hollywood. They played over 3 hrs. Brings back great memories. Great band!
*Great*, live performance. The message in this song is *so* worth remembering: God gave people BRAINS so they could think for THEMSELVES---not be dictated to by others; respect your *own* opinion, your *own* judgment; DONT be afraid to cut loose; the alternative is far more frightening---to be grossly misled. *My* GREY MATTER matters to me: What about yours?! Illuminati=ET kin aka gods, Ea, Sirians, Satan, Pepsi, angels/demons, dragons, hulu, vampires, bluebloods, Al Gore, Windsors, Rothschilds, Rockefellars etc who rule cults like Freemasonry. Their agenda: continually cull/victimize people via gum/other poisons, Codex Alimentarius, carbon taxes, internet 2, WW3 then stage an alien invasion to get a fascist world government/religion with us chipped. Support DrDeagle, Stewart Swerdlow, Oracle Broadcasting, gardeners and free-energy techs!
This is sooooOOOooo fun -- I love hearing this again!! Thank you for posting, it's Oingo Boingo Night ~~~ ROCK ON Oingo Boingo! I love you guys soooo much STILL. Saw you at Santa Clara's Great America with Missing Persons
@Shittybum I saw these guys 6 times during this album on tour. I followed them around L.A. Danny Elfman was even wilder than this. The xylophones were designed as teeth. What is so cool about this band was they were very versatile. Some songs with brass and this one with xylophones. Music pretty agressive head bashing slam dancing music non-stop all the way. Missing Persons also followed a protocal like this but not as balanced in talent.
the only time i saw danny was at the whisky...(way wilder)....i remember the xylophones, what a sound . to this day that was by far the most energetic live music ive experienced..we were front row general. Saw/Felt missing persons santa monica civic auditorim about then too.. ggod days
one of my top five favorite songs of all time. when Danny starts jumpin' and bangin' om the balaphone at the start it reminds me of a little kid just cutting loose and having fun. I've seen them many times and have great memories from every show. could'nt make their farewell, but can't win 'em all. wish I had a time machine...this show and halloween '94 would be top on the list to go back to.
I had the opportunity to see Boingo three times, all at SDSU's Open Air Theatre (late 80's/early 90's). Was always pumped when they played this song. BTW, their actually balaphones from west Africa. They're a xylpphones close cousin.
I would've been at this fucking concert if I wasn't such an anal retentive gentleman & blew off the show to wait 4 a girl I'd met 2 days earlier to get off work at her Venice Beach apartment.
WHAT A DUMBASS!!!!!!! KILL ME ERIC CARTMAN KILL ME!!!
Dude, your Mom rocks!!!! My sons are finally appreciating the "school of rock" they've gotten in my car since birth. From FEAR, Circle Jerks, Motley Crue, Oingo... All 80's madness.
Unfortunately, will never happen. Danny Elfman suffered some hearing loss because of Boingo. I think he wants to keep what hearing he has so he can continue has excellent orchestral career.
Pitty though. I do miss their live shows. I was at one of the Farewell shows in 1995. Had a freakin' blast. That and the Irvine Meadow Halloween shows.
Hey!! Band is really funa dn great experience. Truly something that, even if you don't get the instrument you want (like moi) you'll still most likely enjoy a fuckload. Band was the only damn reason I even went to school. xD
I was in band in middle school, i fuckin' loved it. Not trying to blow my own horn but i was pretty good at xylaphone. Once i got to high school it seem different so i didn't join. I'm a senior right now and i both regret and am glad i didn't join.Regret because my high school was the only school on the west of the Miss. River to play at the Macy's Parade.Glad because all those people are their own little cult!
well you can at least be glad that you don't have to march. xDD Marching is total hell, that's why i'm not joining this year.. >,> that and being a strings person rather than wind. haha, but considering your allusion to it being a cult, i suppose it really is. xD super fun cult!
As much an orchestra in miniature as a rock band, these guys so effectively realized Elfman's darkly brilliant pop music imaginings...& were such performers, too! PERHAPS the best band of the '80s? Could be...
After many years of going to shows, seeing more bands live than I can remember, and over ten years working in the music industry in the 80s and 90s, I have still never come across a more talented, more original, and more FUN band than Oingo Boingo. It's got witty lyrics, clever instruments and a good beat that gets better as the song goes on.

I want a wiggety-wack xylophone!
I can't find the music video, but I allways imagined the xylophones to be hollowed-out bones, does that make me a schmuck?
Love the line in the begining, Oingo Boingo RULZ!!!

@Shittybum i feel ya man, if theres any band i could see live, active or defunct, it would be BOINGO!!!! these guys are one of my top 5 favorties!!!
Laminateddeffect 1 year ago
@Shittybum I saw these guys 6 times during this album on tour. I followed them around L.A. Danny Elfman was even wilder than this. The xylophones were designed as teeth. What is so cool about this band was they were very versatile. Some songs with brass and this one with xylophones. Music pretty agressive head bashing slam dancing music non-stop all the way. Missing Persons also followed a protocal like this but not as balanced in talent.
The72Rabbit 1 year ago
the only time i saw danny was at the whisky...(way wilder)....i remember the xylophones, what a sound . to this day that was by far the most energetic live music ive experienced..we were front row general.

When I Think of Xyylophones, I think of Lawrence Welk. I never saw xyylophones rock this hard!
ponfarr69 2 years ago 2
I had the opportunity to see Boingo three times, all at SDSU's Open Air Theatre (late 80's/early 90's). Was always pumped when they played this song. BTW, their actually balaphones from west Africa. They're a xylpphones close cousin.

Dude, your Mom rocks!!!! My sons are finally appreciating the "school of rock" they've gotten in my car since birth. From FEAR, Circle Jerks, Motley Crue, Oingo... All 80's madness.

Dual xylophones!
Elfman is a genius
Oingo Boingo-totally unique and orginal band. One of a kind, no one sounds like them.
And Im a Slayer and Morbid Angel fan

Back in the 80's this was the ultimate song to slamdance to! I got messed up many times!

I really like this song. Back then for me I thought it had a kind of "Industrial Punk" sound to it.

saw them on New Year's eve back in '80s
They rocked the year out.

Definitely one of their best songs. I love how they rock out on the xylaphone
sshatchell 2 years ago
The most bitchen part is danny built them himself. my god they should reunite
camerahooligan 2 years ago
Unfortunately, will never happen. Danny Elfman suffered some hearing loss because of Boingo. I think he wants to keep what hearing he has so he can continue has excellent orchestral career.
Pitty though. I do miss their live shows. I was at one of the Farewell shows in 1995. Had a freakin' blast. That and the Irvine Meadow Halloween shows.

Hey I was at Irvine Meadow Halloween. I seen them so many times, I lost track. Always a hoot

i'm going to be a junior
and i have never ever taken band before
lol it should be interesting
MagnumStellarz 2 years ago 2
Hey!! Band is really funa dn great experience. Truly something that, even if you don't get the instrument you want (like moi) you'll still most likely enjoy a fuckload. Band was the only damn reason I even went to school. xD
metalliriffer 2 years ago
I was in band in middle school, i fuckin' loved it. Not trying to blow my own horn but i was pretty good at xylaphone. Once i got to high school it seem different so i didn't join. I'm a senior right now and i both regret and am glad i didn't join.Regret because my high school was the only school on the west of the Miss. River to play at the Macy's Parade.Glad because all those people are their own little cult!
CaxAttack 2 years ago
well you can at least be glad that you don't have to march. xDD Marching is total hell, that's why i'm not joining this year.. >,> that and being a strings person rather than wind. haha, but considering your allusion to it being a cult, i suppose it really is. xD super fun cult!

I'm on the outside!
That is why haha

way beyond normal parameters. Houston we have an Oingo Boingo.
tomeeeee1 2 years ago
As much an orchestra in miniature as a rock band, these guys so effectively realized Elfman's darkly brilliant pop music imaginings...& were such performers, too! PERHAPS the best band of the '80s? Could be...

by Danny and the Boys and to this day
the preferred instrument used in music therapy for kids who are autisitic.
