Just finished reading this book. It felt like the author took every bad thing in society and put it into one book so that it would be called a "classic" and would be studied in schools for years to come. The story jumps around and doesn't really build up to a climax but instead Silvey throws in a whole new element whenever the story starts to run dry and needs a kickstart.

Would definitely NOT recommend it.

domestic abuse, discrimation, racism, suicide, rape, alcoholism, corruption, etc

you are way off. this book is an amazing coming of age book that takes you on a great journey. there is tragedy, but also self discovery. the author brilliantly brings you into the mind of this 13 year old boy and the dilemma he finds himself in. his friendship with Jeffery is hilarious.  and his family dynamic is so relevant.

I would recommend this book to anyone.
