  • Somebody should do a dubstep remix of this superb opus.

  • 3:56 OMG

  • thump up if you play this song when you get upset at work

  • 0:00 again and again and again :)

  • Janes Addiction meets GnR meets Smashing Pumpkins meets Kyuss, eh?

  • The message of this song rings truer now even more than in the 90s.

  • Dream Theater are so confusing, i don't know whether to close my mind and use my eyes, or close my eyes and use my mind

  • @Jonesy177x Don't close anything and use your entire feelings!

  • this song is kinda funny

  • @lsmartin96 This album is kinda funny xD

  • 1:31 Bohemian Rhapsody?

  • @mrgober0ne

It does sound like Bohemian Rhaposdy a little bit! Also, if you listen to the guitar solo of Wither part of it sounds like Bohemian Rhapsody's solo. It's weird how these things happen in music.

  • this so song is about mike portnoy agrivated

  • Anyone know which china Mike is using at 0:56? Cause it sounds absolutely amazing and I need to get myself one :D

  • @329Mortar 20" HH thin Chinese. Be sure to try it before buying it, since some cymbals sound a lot better on record than they actually are.

  • @xXSTFDXx Thanks :) and thats so true xD also if its HH, its gonna be so much money :') so i'll make sure to try before I buy. Cheers~

  • @xXSTFDXx Indeed. China sound drastically different in real life than in records.

  • @329Mortar I think it's a Sabian 18" HHX China, but i recommend the Wuhan 16" China, the sound is very similar and it's cheaper (i have one)...

  • Just close your mind

You can find all you need with your eyes

Those lines make me laugh out loud every time XD

  • A daily dose of eMpTyV

Will flush your mind right down the drain

    Shannon Hoon and Kurt Cobain,

Make yourself a household name, yeah-yeah

    Yeah

  • the song talks about how the record companies werent letting DT enough freedom to do their own music. the reference to cobain and hoon are the examples of promising talents who flopped because the companies disagreed with them. DT doesnt want that to happen to them.

  • The big machines take care of you Until you kill yourself And then the sales go through the roof Calculated, formulated Feed my head with simple thoughts And let me breathe instead of being taught All bottled up and tearing at the seams I'm bored Just let me breathe
  • Shannon Hoon and kirk cobain aren't those the twos that died

  • @DANizDAN

Exactly. Especially since Tron beats them both.

    :D

  • who the fuck is hoon?

  • @MikleShnikle

Shannon Hoon? Singer from Blind Melon

  • @JonP1961 whos blind lemon?

  • @MikleShnikle

Not sure, apparently a different band than Blind Melon.

A search engine might be able to have patience with this and subsequent questions you're about to pose...

  • @JonP1961 yes sir, thank you sir.

  • Hmm is there a connection to this song and "Take the time?" In Take the Time he says"Close your eyes you'll find all you need in your mind" in this song he says "Close your mind you'll find all your need with your eyes"

  • The reason, I believe, that they made this song is because at the time the record company they were with was severely editing their music.

  • Toto - Girl Goodbye

  • 2:22 to 2:30

WTF!? It sounds like Bohemian Rhapsody

  • @gianlucator

    good call !!

  • IM BORD JUST LET ME BREATHE

  • Comment removed

  • @2113KBI sorry but kurt cobain is a very good example of being simple and being awesome....

  • @2113KBI im sorry i find that rather rude... kurt cobain and shannon hoon were great musicians...

  • @shwangomatic I NEVER said they weren't great musicians, because they were. They were unbelievably amazing musicians and Cobain was a genius at writing lyrics.

  • @2113KBI Fuck Off

  • I didn't like this song that much, but the outra was kickass.

  • I like panic attack by dream theater , you go there and you see all the nasty comments they put about not having it on rock band 2 and having it on rock band 2..

  • 3:56 onwards

    Derek: their best keyboardist

and he was Greek as well

  • worst dt song til today.. don't see what is so nice about this. i mean, it's grand, but not as good as the rest..

  • @kevinkuypers i like this song =)

  • Very underrated song, one of my favorites from FII.

  • Probably worst Dream Theater song to date. And the fact that it recklessly mentions Shannon Hoon and Kurt Cobain makes it worse. I mean, I get it about Cobain. The guy everyone loves to hate. It doesn't surprise me, even though I love Nirvana. But Hoon...? It breaks my heart.

  • @SpaceDyeDream According to MP, Hoon was anti-DT.

  • 3:21-3:30 - Now THAT'S Dream Theater right there, doing 5 right!

  • Anyone else bust out laughing at 1:15 "Step right up folks!"

  • omg. the part at 2:51 that nickelback stole is the best part of this song. I guess it's a good part to steal! When labrie sings AAAANNGGGGEEERRR! that's the shit!

  • this is the most intelligent song from a lyrical point of view just because its criticizing everything thats wrong with the musical industry that nobody recognizes....

    and emptyv.... thats really funny

  • Can ya hear the Deep Purple influence? Can ya? Can ya? CAN YA? I can, yea.

  • HAHAHAHA "eMpty V!"

  • is it me or does this sound much more mature than the other stuff they were doing at that point?

  • This song won't go ever on MTV. This is good :-D

  • one of Theaters best intros

  • 2:51

  • this song isn't criticizing shannon hoon and kurt cobain. it IS criticizing the music industry/labels though. the song is called "just let me breathe", it's about the crushing pressure that artists are under from the labels to keep putting out material and keep touring. it destroys lives, like cobain and hoon - and the labels know that when they drive these artists to death the sales are only going to go up. they use up artists like Cobain and Hoon, throw them away, and rake in the dough

  • This song it's hypocritical, how you criticize the big labels when you're in one?, Why you critic the business that you help to made?, it's bullshit, the only difference of this band and others with more presence in TV it's that their songs are 20 minutes longer. And i know, "how dare you?, they're gods", no, they are not gods, it's just a medium band with long songs, boring sound that the metalheads defends just for the technique, well music it more than technique,Noon and Cobain knew it.DTdon't

  • @kaoko111

    You suck at Grammar.

  • Comment removed

  • @kaoko111

I would take the time to learn to type what I want to say before I say it. You're already going to be biased against because you're on this band's video criticizing them so they would only think you moronic if you can't say what you're trying to say. It doesn't help your side at all is what I'm saying. Feel free to have your own opinion, I'm just telling you what would be best.

  • @Beast6Of6Bass6 ok?... lets talk about moronic. Mi opinion es muy mi problema, pero, si te hace sentir mejor, lo voy a traducir a un idioma que tal vez se te haga mas facil (Because, my bad english, trust me, is better than the best spanish of most americans).

Albert Einstein said, "Whoever undertakes to set himself up as judge in the field of truth and knowledge is shipwrecked by the laughter of the gods."

Am I clear?

  • @kaoko111

Aha either way I was just telling you to help you. Feel free to be a dick about it.

  • @kaoko111 LOL... I finally got to your post. I wanted to see why the other guys were talking trash about you. They were right!!

  • how did nickelback rip this off? i dont even hear the same riff

  • This album is probably my least or second least favorite of theirs, as it is for most everyone, but I think this song is really good. It has great energy and portrays the emotion Dream Theater felt then. Gets me fired up every time I listen to it.

  • i love dt =)

  • You're right, Hoon is nowhere near a mediocre musician, he was a great musical mind. I'm so sick of people criticizing other music just because they lack heaviness or speed. Blind Melon was great in there own right, just like Dream Theater is a great band for what they do. I'm so sick of "metalheads" they're so ignorant.

  • is it just me or does the chorus sound similar to the latter part of bohemian rhapsody? xD

  • @Dhruvva Fuck, I totally agree with you! I always thought "i think i've heard this before", but never knew why.

It's really surprising to me that i never figured out that. Such a famous song that i always listened to.

  • @Dhruvva You know, I was listening to bohemian rhapsody and it does sound kinda like that part.

  • 3:56-4:15

  • This song sucks ass so much.

You Not Me does as well.

The rest of the album is just fantastic.

    I don't know why it wasn't a succes.

  • @SpaceDyeDream the album kinda sucks in case you missed that...

  • @SpaceDyeDream This is probably the worst album Dream Theater ever made, precisely because the record companies pushed for them to produce more of a 'mainstream' sound, and even hired a songwriter(Desmond Child) to re-write a couple of the songs, specifically "You Not Me."

Instead of mainstream success, they got just the opposite; the album was their biggest critical and commercial flop.

It's not a 'BAD' album, it's just a bad Dream Theater album.

  • An album that had to grow on me when it debuted, but when it did, it became an amazing album - but, saying that, this was a Song that HIT ME right away with a few others, and the way the "industry" almost broke up the band in the making of this album and the lyrical comments of the song are priceless :D Great stuff! -MAVIII

  • DREAM THEATER KICKS ASS!!! REGARDLESS!

  • @DegraDeadlock Alexi GAYHOE!

  • @DegraDeadlock

alexi laiho has no right to insult any guitar player lol.

  • finally another 7 string song! didnt know this one yet:P

  • @DegraDeadlock (@xXSTFDXx) yes, DT plays only fast, when they think, that this would underline the atmosphere right.... and usually they think right^^

  • @DerMax1990 pretty much all of 6 degrees and Train of thought are 7 string, and a few songs off awake and images are 7 string if you're looking for more

  • DIOS mio esta cancion es genial exelente i love dt =)

  • listen real close to JP at 4:29-4:34. nothing earth shatteringly complex, just some simple interval work there on his way to the octave. it's very few notes played but it's done so well with the feedback.

    resonance!

  • @DegraDeadlock This is where people misunderstand dream theater. They don't play fast for the sake of playing fast, like blind guardian or children of bodom or even dragonforce. They play fast because they can, and they don't do it everytime - they do it when the time is right. This is music at its best.

  • @xXSTFDXx I think he was agreeing with you, but just saying that its okay to listen to music thats not as complex... I think Id hafta agree with him there. If I only listened to bands that were as talented muscially as Dream Theater Id only have 5 artists on my iTunes instead of 105... or 104 rather, since I'm deleting Metallica in like two minutes.

  • @blavaburnulots My itunes consists almost entirely progressive metal, with bands near the same magnitude as Dream Theater. I can't listen to anything else. Progressive metal is the pinnacle of music. But yeah, I only have 14 artists in my itunes, 12 are progressive metal bands. But I wouldn't have it any other way. Except with more awesome progressive metal bands of course.

  • @Virus940 I don't mind simplicity in music. I have artists ranging from The Kinks, to Spock's Beard. Dream Theater to Megadeth (and all the side projects and solo careers of the various members of both bands). A friend of mine listens to Metallica and Avenged Sevenfold obsessively, and despite how much I hate both bands, one or two songs have grown on me. All of my favorites are prog bands, but theres more out there. I guess thats the point of my long winded message.

  • @Virus940 I know this is a bit late. But, out of curiosity, what are the bands in your iTunes? I may be tempted to look some of them up, if they are as you say.

  • @blavaburnulots BTBAM, Protest the Hero, Periphery, Cynic, Fuge, Keith Merrow, Tesseract, Orbs, Dream Theater of course, Meshuggah (they're very much an acquired taste). Those are all the prog bands I listen to. Then I have a few songs from All That Remains and As I Lay Dying.

  • @Virus940 I'll look into them then thanks. Though I already have listened to BTBAM before and can say I probably will not like them. But, if you like prog bands of the same magnitude (or close to it) as DT and can tolerate some more mellow music, then you should look into Gentle Giant or Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. I'm also surprised that Transatlantic is not on that list.

  • @blavaburnulots Yeah I like some mellow stuff. But I prefer things a little heavier.

  • @Virus940 I would say the same, but there are times when heavier music manages to only annoy me and I switch over to more mellow stuff, and the same goes vice versa when mellow stuff annoys me. My listening pattern is random and my iTunes library very diverse.

  • @Virus940 O_o we are all that remains.... finish a song... we are all that remains... start a song... we are all that remains... finish a song... we are all that remains. Me- yeah i heard you the first fucking time jesus christ! Them live, not good... got to say.

  • @ZenithXUrizen I've never heard them live. I don't really care either, I'm not a huge fan of them. I just listen to a few of their songs once in a while.

  • @xXSTFDXx Eh, I see your point and agree with it to an extent but you really can't bundle these guys in with BG, CoB or DF - they're completely different bands. Power metal is pretty difficult to compare to progressive metal in the grand scheme of things.

Maybe something like Symphony X would be a better comparison (a nice middle ground between the genres).

  • @xXSTFDXx true. I just like to tell people to listen to vacant, space-dye vest, goodnight kiss etc. and tell me again that dream theater just play as fast as they can a bunch all the time. And I wouldn't put it like "they play fast because they can" I'd put it more like they "play fast when it is necessary to create a certain vibe just like they play slow, melodically or, percussively etc. to create different feelings" They are well rounded performers/composers.

  • @xXSTFDXx a true show of power is when you dont use it, but i do love all of the other bands you named

  • @xXSTFDXx Did you just say Blind Guardian plays fast for the sake of playing fast? I just saw them last night and they had one of the best slower groves I have heard. Besides the fact that Andre, the lead guitarist, was playing rather slow solos compared to most other solos.... These people...

  • @hide21998 There's a difference between between playing fast -only- and playing fast - for the sake of playing fast-. Don't get me wrong dude, I absolutely love CoB, for example, but I still am able to admit that they do play for the sake of playing fast a lot of the times. Then again, I don't see any problem at all with playing fast just for the hell of it, I love fast-paced metal. It's just that people for some reason use it against dream theater. Like they're to blame for being so skilled.

  • @xXSTFDXx fucking yeah

  • @DegraDeadlock he was drunk as hell when he said that haha. but petrucci was a sport about and said "me better than Alexi laiho?" "that guy can play while drunk!"

  • @DegraDeadlock You know that this song is actually mike portnoy criticizing the music industry and mediocre "musicians" such as kurt and hoon, right?

  • @xXSTFDXx OWNED!

  • @xXSTFDXx Hoon is no where near a mediocre musician, that's the most outrageous comment i've heard in a long time

  • @ackohler There are people who would say the same about lady gaga and akon. I'm sorry my man, but compared to DT and many other bands, yes, hoon is a mediocre musician. Compared to 50 cent he is a genius.

  • @xXSTFDXx only a dumb fuck would compare two whole different genres (metal and rap - 50 cent). you can't compare two people from two different genres. it's un-fuckin heard of

  • @Rebldoomer Only a limited mind wouldn't compare two different genres.

  • @xXSTFDXx

only an idiot would think he made a point

  • @Rebldoomer Can I drop in a word or 6? Rage Against The Machine - Rap Metal.

  • @xXSTFDXx wow explain me that please :D

  • @xXSTFDXx i respect what you are saying and agree accept with your claim of 'mediocre' musicians...I am a life long theater fan so dont mistake POV as spam or hate..but if music is based on who is a better skilled musician than i suppose your comment is right...Its clear the 2 you mention could never put together anything half as complex/incredible as theater do but that doesnt make them mediocre. ...to make things short its the image being criticized..when the image is bigger than the musician

  • @Emanusmell

    except not accept dumbass.

  • @zianclone234500 *Except*, not accept*, dumbass.

Learn how to use grammar if you're going to insult someone's English in a comment, imbecile.

  • @iluvme4never Here is a quote from you. "i respect what you are saying and agree accept with your claim of 'mediocre' musicians..."

And you're criticizing me for my grammar? Wow, whatever. You're the "imbecile".

  • @xXSTFDXx I thought that was simple enough to get. Are people really so dim they can't understand it?
