  • I do a gang show and this is one of the sets because we're doing alot of the two ronnies

  • very clever...very funny....brilliant!

  • one of the most celeverly written sketches i've ever seen! I LOVE IT!

  • "What kind of artist?" (pause) "a er..pass!" "That's near enough". i.e. piss artist -;) Cleverly put together and probably written by Barker.

  • your name please good evening

  • Genius comedy, one of my all time favourite Two Ronnies sketches. Brilliant word play, very clever stuff. It doesn't need to have bad language to be good, but some comedy benefits from it. But like anything in life its a subjective thin just because you don't find it funny, doesn't mean it isn't funny. Personally I love this clip :o)

  • Fair Comment...

But in the replies to my comments you have made the point yourselves.

This humour/comedy then was on prime time television, when every one could watch it.

    No foul offensive language etc,

The shows you mention are I believe on late at night sprinkled with bad language and offensive innuendoes I accept.all acceptable .

However as mainstream comedy as with your use of the word b*****ks to me not acceptable.

  • So you admit that you know nothing about TV comedy today and yet you see fit to criticise it?

  • I left on here an honest opinion of how I saw this sketch in the context of Comedy today.

That is all it was, my opinion.

Someone called Plevyman replies to my commemt.

I accept most of all he/she says, that is how they see it.

I have never seen or heard of 2DTV and the mentioned programmes.and accept I am probably out of touch.

However I find extremely insulting and offensive the tone of and the us e of one particular word in the reply, that being b*******ks.

    Totally uncalled for !!

  • @dw69ful To quote your own words, "some one will be offended by something. We cannot risk that happening !"

  • Fantastically brilliant!

Good old Ronnie Barker (wrote sketches under a pseudonym Gerald Wylie)

    Sadly no longer with us

  • Does anyone know what the original quotation about Margaret Thatcher was - "Her heart may be in the right place but her..." - and who said it? Just curious.

  • The reason we do not see this quality nowadays imo is because everything in this brilliant sketch is as with a lot of comedy from years ago, it is taking the mickey out of things.

Nowadays OH NO This is not allowed, some one will be offended by something. We cannot risk that happening !

Obviously it could never happen, but just imagine if these two were still about now and created a sketch to do with the current Politically Correct minefield of nowadays what it would be like.

  • @dw69ful Uh, I guess you've never seen 2DTV, The Thick Of It or anything else by Armando Iannucci, Doubletake, Misfits, Mock the Week, or Monkey Dust then.

Basically, you are talking bollocks - there's nothing in this sketch which would make it unacceptable now.

  • @plevyman Armando Iannucci is (in my opinion) a pompous little man trying to punch above his weight. In The Loop didn't make me laugh once. Overrated toss.

  • Whoever wrote this sketch must be a genius. Very Funny and Very Clever

  • not only very funny but very clever!! why we can't get this quali ty on tv now i'll never know!

  • 11 dislikes? How can anyone dislike this?

  • @llynfach They're one video behind

  • @ewaf88 Like your words, ewa88. Very crisp.

  • Genius.

  • this will forever be one of my favourite comedy sketches.

  • If it was writen today, the answer to the question what is the difference between a donky and an ass, the previous question would be name the current prime minster and deptuary prime minster?

  • too good

  • Brandon Thomas wrote what famous long-running English farce? - British Leyland

Complete the quotation on Mrs Thatcher: "Her heart may be in the right place but her..."? - Charlie's Aunt

  • What do people kneel on at church? - The Rt Revd Robert Runcie

What do tarantulas prey on? - Hassocks

What would a ripcord open? - Large flies

What sort of person lived in Bedlam - A parachute

    What is a jockstrap? - A nutcase

Why would a decorator use methylene chlorides? - A form of athletic support

What did Henri Toulouse-Lautrec do? - Paint strippers

Who is Dean Martin? - A sort of artist - What sort of artist? - Pass

What make is the standard London bus? - Singer

  • What is palaeontology? - Yes, absolutely correct

Which document lists members of the peerage? - The study of old fossils

Who are Len Murray and Sir Geoffrey Howe? - Burke's

What is the difference between a donkey and an ass? - One's a trade union leader, the other's a member of the Cabinet

Complete "To be or not to be..."? - They're both the same

What is Bernard Manning famous for? - That is the question

Who is the present Archbishop of Canterbury? - A fat man who tells blue jokes

  • did r corbett forget his line at 2:06 or did i miss something?

  • @pib712thesecond due to the nature of his subject his character struggled when Barker asked him the question within a question "what sort of artist" he had to give the answer to "who is dean martin". hope this helps :)

  • "What's the difference between a donkey and an ass?"

  • Ummm....PASS

    Close enough, lets carry on

    lol

  • 'What is a jock-strap?'

    'A nut-case'

I wet myself at that one

  • Priceless comedy

  • how on earth would you start, you need a question that would be funny with the answer of the question previous, and that answer must be funny with the next question, mind boggoling genius

  • @Veggieman87 the question before last was "What would you use a rip-cord to pull open" lol

  • @ billybop56 I think he was asking why the punchline to the question "What sort of a person lived in Bedlam?" was "A parachute"

I know Bedlam was a mental hospital but I didn't get the parachute bit either.

Perhaps David Renwick couldn't tie those two particular questions in, so just put in a nonsensical answer.

David wrote two of my favourite Two Ronnies sketches(This and Crossed Lines) and was responsible for one of my favourite sitcoms, One Foot in the Grave. Top man!

  • @usernameemanresu Explanation: Bedlam = madhouse. A parachute spirals around and around, slowing down someone jumping with a parachute, as a madman may spiral out of control.

  • The one punchline I don't get is the "parachute" line. Can someone explain that one, please?

  • @Veggieman87 From the timing, I think it's just pure set-up for the next joke. Personally, I think it works on a purely non-sequitur basis.

  • A sketch that has its genesis in the BBC Radio 4 series The Burkiss Way written by David Renwick and Andrew Marshall.

  • this could be a close second to four candles, or better!

  • "Her heart may be in the right place but her..." "Charlie's Aunt."

How did Ronnie C keep a straight face all through this??

  • Ronnie barker and ronnie corbett the original piss takers.

  • If you have a exam DON'T bother watching this I laughed so hard I couldn't breath

  • Magnusson: Correct. What is the difference between a donkey and an ass?

Smithers: One's a trade union leader and the other's a member of the cabinet.

  • Absolute genius! Still funny today! Brilliantly crafted with all the double meanings and whether you're British or not, you get the jokes! (Mrs T, British Leyland, trade union leaders etc) Forget today's comics, this was when Britain LAUGHED! Classic!!!

  • this is a very close call with not the nine o'clock news' darts sketch for best sketch ever!!!

  • Best comedy sketch ever wrote, thank you the two ronnies!

  • It doesn't get much better than this.

  • So, so clever. Unbelievable.

  • A study in comedic timing and brilliance in writing.

  • Funny

  • this is what every comedian should look to for good timing

  • this or the morcombe and wise version?

  • Brilliant, can't beat the two Ronnies

  • This is so so funny. And really clever too. Old comedy is the best :)

  • lol wow

  • I hate these laughs.......

  • Laugh track is too qiuet.

  • oh...my.....god...FUCK THE LAUGH TRACK!!! I had to stop watching it was so loud and obnoxious

  • @DainMiller He is giving answers to the previous questions.

  • @DainMiller Maybe you're just thick.

  • @Chaytup You are probably right man. More than likely. I mean, we are always things we don't realize or see ourselves as anyway... so that could very well be true.

  • @DainMiller <3

  • @Chaytup shutup faggot.

  • @ITakeYourFood ikr

  • @DainMiller Well, you Americans aren't really well known for understanding humour are you..

  • 2:06 - ad lib!

  • What is a jockstrap?

    "a nutcase"

  • Best comedic sketch EVER

  • @carntspell. Check out One Foot In The Grave, David Renwick's magnum opus. Best sitcom since Fawlty Towers.

  • can u find the sketch where Ronnie Barker is a priest, I think and does a sermon all in rhyming slang.

I remember it's about finding a 'small brown Richard The Third' on the pavement , and how lucky he was not to step on it and some other stuff and ended:

    "And the Richard The Third...

    ...flew back to its nest.."

  • @littleniyah Ronnie's sermon in rhyming slang is Season 5, episode 1. I was watching it the other day.

  • @Goodiesfanful No shit! Can u upload? I cant find it here in HMV Hong Kong, only a greatest hits.

  • @littleniyah Sorry, I can't upload, but season five is available through Amazon.

  • Brilliantly performed but the genius is David Renwick for writing this masterpiece. And of course he continued the greatness with his scripts for One Foot in the Grave. Remarkable talent.

  • @Misterpratty Really? Will look him up. These days he`d be an executive producer with a house in Rio but back then I suppose writers were in the background.

  • Has to be one of the all time classics this! I still don't know how they managed to keep straight faces! This is comedy at it's finest, sadly lacking among today's so called comedians.

  • LOL

  • unbelievably funny,

  • What timing...classic

  • This is an absolutely brilliant sketch, just so clever :) Comedy genius imo.

I did a version of this sketch in a performance once!

  • Pure brilliance!

  • Genius. Simple as.

  • i've seen this sketch so many times and still i laugh. in 20 years time i will still laugh just as much because it is comedy at it's absolute best. not many modern day comedies that i could say that about!!!

  • four candles might be more well known but this is the funniest sketch

  • I used to watch the Two Ronnies when i was younger with my grandad, i can't remember laughing as much as i did then. I keep Ronnie B's book of scripts close at hand at all times. This and F-U-N-E-X are probably my favourites, and now you know, help yourself to a mint.

  • 7 dislikes, they've no sense of humour.

  • @SuperMadman48 Seven Americans? Only joking. Seriously, there's so many great gagsa in this sketch is't impossible to pick a favourite.

  • Comedy genius - it's easy to forget just how good the Two Ronnies were!

  • this just sooo works its like chalk and cheese and

i am absolutley correct and yes definatley jockeys

are nutcases if i get 50 thumbs up i will hit the roof

50 down and i will kill everybody!!!

  • Very clever and very very funny!!!!!!!!!!!

  • there both the same lol

  • What is a jockster?

    A nut case.

  • @Big12189 jock strap..

  • brilliant,,,great comedy by two geniusis,,

  • Quick question: what is a Berk, since Murray and Howe are supposed to be one?

  • @EricAKATheBelgianGuy `Berk`-mild,slang term for an `fool`.

  • @MrValiant61 Maybe not that mild. It comes from cockney rhyming slang: Berkley Hunt = c...

  • @MrValiant61 actually it means burkes as in the burkes peerage guide

  • @crusierweightchamp Yes i know. I was replying to another person`s question , as to what the word `berk` meant in relation to Howe and Murrey.

  • "What is Bernard Manning famous for?"

    "That is the question."

  • How can anybody dislike this?

  • This just cracks me up everytime, how they both keep a straight face is different class in itself!!

  • "What is a jogstrap? A nutcase!" LOL=)

  • @pinkriffic, I'm an American,and I thought it was Funny

  • Um, pass.

    Close enough.

Those "Americans" have nothing on us in terms of comedy; we're well ahead. ;D

  • Other countries have their specialties, but the brits are THE masters of comedy.

  • @Mystep im not british and i agree pyton and sullivan and many others amazing stuff from the brits

  • So, until then, it's good night from me...and good night from him.

  • Turn on captions it will make things even funnyer!!!!!!!

  • Sheer brilliance, it's absolutely amazing how intellectual their humor is.

  • another class 2 ronnies sketch

  • This is my single favorite comedy sketch of all time.

The sheer brilliance in its writing and the way they delivered it, god bless Ronnie Barker.

The two ronnies are the height of comedy, and this sketch is the height of the two ronnies ... well not corbet obviously, hes only 2ft 1 :D

  • By chance, I saw this sketch while in a museum. I cried with laughter, tears rolled down my face. I found it so funny. So so clever.Thank you 2 ronnies for giving us that.

  • Clearly there are 5 idiots out there ... Wow. As brilliant as it is funny! Absolutely fantastic! "Nutcase!" LMFAO!!!

  • Every line ROnnie Corbett spoke was a punchline, if it was not for the canned laughter they could have carrie don with breakneck speed not even giving the audience chance to stop laughing between punchlines. The delviery is sublime and can teach modern comedy a lesson or two.

  • would have loved to have been there when the ronnies wrote this sketch, just to see what did'nt make it into it, cos that must have taken quite some time to come together. heres to everyone who have ripped them off since....u all know who you are...lol.

  • what is wrong with the five morons who voted "dislike"?

  • @krinpaus Probably members of the peerage who didn't like being called old fossils.

  • Good old skl comedy <3

  • Best comedy double act ever!!!

  • I adore this sketch! =D

  • charlie smithers

  • 5 dislikes?? WTF get a life you humorless cretins! this is REAL comedy at its best. pure brilliance and impeccable timing. no amount of repeats has me reaching for the remote! Ronnie Barker RIP. what a genius

  • was'nt it David Renwick who wrote this sketch?

  • "A nutcase." How often do you see one punchline get TWO laughs?

  • I mean ... this is amazingly brilliant !!!

  • how he kept a straight face through that I will never know!

  • has to be the most genius 3 minutes of comedy ever written.

  • The way he says his name never fails to make me laugh for some reason!

  • "whats the difference between a donkey and an ass?"

"one's a trade union leader, the other is a member of the cabinet"

how true, shows not much has changed since their day lol

  • Still hilarious...i burst out laughing ever so often...

  • 18 points in one round! Tremendous score!

  • this is so cleverly done hahahaha

  • 5 people dont like this??? what is wrong with their sense of humour!

  • I love this :) I'm sorry I know it's dumb, but could someone explain some of the jokes I don;t get?

For instance: Britsh Leyland, The dean martin thing.

  • @ChocChipCookie1 I'm not sure about the Dean Martin one, but British Leyland was a car company that had a chequered history; hence it was a long running farce!

  • @ChocChipCookie1 Ronnie Barker says "what kind of artist?" and Ronnie Corbett says "pass". "That's near enough" refers to the pronunciation - ie, "pass" sounds a bit like "piss", so Dean Martin is a "piss artist", which is a term for a drunk.

Apologies if that's too much explanation! :-)

  • How Ronnie C kept a straight face.......

  • This scetch is quite possibly the most clever thing to ever come out of british comedy

  • Absolutely brilliant comedy genius! Wish they made comedy shows like this now, I am 25 and much prefer to watch old 70's/80's comedy shows than the rubbish that is on telly these days.

  • @ains085 The reason TV sucks now is because of annoying TV shows like T4. The jokes and humour has all become sarcasm which is the lowest form of wit.

  • @ains085 i totaly agree (i am 25 too!) but i also like mitchel and webb

  • @ains085 i'm 26 and I absolutely agree.

  • @ains085 i'm 14 and i agree. I was introduced to comedy like this when i was 7 or 8. I don't find modern comedy at all funny.

The Two Ronnies are some of my favourite comedians along side, Morecambe and Wise and Ken Dodd

  • @ains085 i'm 28 and couldnt agree with you more and porridge is still my favourite sitcom

  • @ains085 17 and feel exactly the same.

  • @ains085 Yes you're absolutely right , I'm 54 & am lucky enough to have been around when comedy like this was in abundance . I remember watching one comedy show after another , Morecombe & Wise , Rising Damp , Steptoe , Fawlty Towers , Porridge etc etc , the list is endless . Classic programmes that will live forever . I dont watch TV now , it's all complete & utter c**p !! Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could turn the clock back ?

  • I'm fascinated by how Ronnie C gets a laugh simply out of saying his character's rather bland name - the acid test of any comedy performer.

  • 5 people missed the like button

  • ronnie barker was a genius

  • lmao this is awesome.

  • charlies aunt!!! :D makes me so happy. not so much my mate charlie though

  • Classic comedy. Cant wait for the one ronnie on xmas day!

  • @wickedwickedwicked42 What time?

  • Well I do say this is rather funny.

  • Masters at work.....

  • Still great after all these years

  • its unfortunate that he cant get a job because he wont swear

  • Fucking love the two ronnies! Corbet is a legend!

  • this is absolutly amazing

  • @Queen7185

You have got mixed up. David Renwick was awarded the Writers Guild Ronnie Barker Award at the British Comedy Awards 2008. But he was not Ronnie Barker.

  • Barker didn't write this sketch, it was David Renwick.

  • @Vennegoor10 David Renwick is Ronnie Barker, he wrote by that name so he didnt get credit for it, look it up

  • @Queen7185 No,you're thinking of Gerald Wiley.

The David Renwick who wrote this is the same David Renwick who wrote One Foot in the Grave.
