I would like to hear this lokomotive leave or enter the siding in fornt of my house in the middle of the night when the city is quiet. It sounded pretty loud and if it is competing against the class 66 it does not seem to be an improvement noisewise. My opinion is based on this video only...
So how does something like this work? An engine can only rotate so slow before it dies, so I'm guessing some sort of clutch where they slowly transfer engine power from flywheel only to a flywheel and the shafts that go to the wheel until the train gains momentum then they release the clutch more and that pattern continues? If not, how?
i know. thats why i said impressive. Its jus one locomotive doing the work. CSX regularly uses one GE unit to pull around 25 to 30 loaded autorack cars. That's somewhere around 4,500 ton range.
Keep in mind the much higher axle loads in the U.S. Higher weight allows higher tractive effort and larger and heavier engines. Usually diesel-hydraulics have a better power/weight ratio than diesel-electrics because the hydraulic gear is less heavy than the "additional" generators and motors needed for the electric power transmission. However, modern electrical equipment made this advantage less important today.
wait a sec! 4 to 5 locomotives at the point of a 2600 ton train is over kill. One locomotive can handle a light weight 2600 ton train. Normal American Freight trains go anyway from 8000 tons for your locals to nearly 20,000 tons for coal drags.
correction...According to Voith, the Maxima 40CC is the most powerful single-engined diesel-hydraulic locomotive in the world. I thought this locomotive was a normal Diesel/Electric. Instead, its a Diesel/Hydraulic. We dont use those types of mainline freight locomotives here in the States. Thats where i got confused.
It's a diesel-hydraulic locomotive- the first to be built in over forty years. And it won the Red Dot Design Award.

This scene in this video is a test situation for the anti slide automatic.
Accelerating during rain / wet tracks in a curve.
No other locomotive, no matter how strong, could have solved this test in a better manner.
Simply because this is the most modern anti slide automatic now.
You can´t compare that with an acceleration under normal circumstances (acceleration on straight tracks in dry weather).

Totally agree. Put a class 59 and a 60 far ahead of this Voith thing!

optically a matter of taste - BUT
this diesel engine is state-of-the-art technology with a lot of technical recent developments with patents.
So much better than those GM or Class 66 crap.

impressive. 2600 tons sounds light compared to our 10,000 to 15,000 ton coal drags in the states.
