@webcajun I am wondering about Okra seeds I have taken the hulls off the plant when they are dried and cracked open a bit but I have not seen any seeds come up. I planted some in a flowr pot with some peppers and some just thrown on ground and watered most every day. Will I have to wait till after a freeze to take the hulls? Or do I just have to wait a year to find out.
@webcajun A couple of weeks ago I had a small dried Okra I broke it and threw the seeds on the ground. Looks like I have a bit of green coming up. Might be Okra might not it has to be a bit bigger for me to know but I ought to know bu fall. A little thing with 2 small leaves and 2 slightly smaller leaves..
Hey my main man!!!! I'm back and have my garden cooking big time this year.Tomatos are already 6' and still climbing!! Goodluck with yours and catch you on the next vid .
@xxwnetelxx ...Hey Bobby, glad to hear you're having a good season. It's hot and very dry in my area having to water a lot to keep the plants alive.......Donald
Hi Mr. Donald - You are AWESOME! I've been following you for a couple of years and I'm on my second garden, thanks to you. You have provided me a lot of inspiration! This year, I'm doing raised beds. I live in Florida and we have sand, lots of sand! So, I went with the raised beds to get some good soil and so far so good! I do lots of research, like you said, with Univ. of Florida and that is very good advice. I must also say that I am addicted to your videos. You are SO smart! :)
@mreeves711 ...Having local / state information is extremely helpful to even the most experienced gardeners. We are in or very near the same Zone, conditions do vary but the basics are the same. Each year you will learn more and will become better at what you’re doing. I learn something new every season…..Donald
Hey there. I used your beet canning recipe last fall. This year we are growing twice as many. I ran out. They were so good, we ate them up over the winter. My seeds are in the ground now.
You are the coolest gardener ever. Once I get some land I'm going to grow a huge garden every year. Vegetable growing is my favorite. I plant as much as I can in my apartment indoors now, but that doesn't allow for a lot. Does anyone have any advice for joining a community garden in the city? I've looked all over the internet to find information about community gardens in Philadelphia but can't find anything :(
love your videos, very helpful. I do have a question though, I do a decent size garden every year, but this year i will be attempting an herb garden for the first timed as well, do you ever grow herbs, and if so, what tips and or advice do you have?
Hey Donald, thanks for taking the time to post videos! I am planting my frist veggie garden this year. I live in a Historic District in Downtown Jacksonville and we are trying to bring back gardening to the neighborhood like they used to in the old days! I have never done it before, so this should be fun. I will be documenting mine as well hoping that someone might benifit from my mistakes LOL
Hi Donald ,great to see you back in 2011 , sorry its so cold over there ,South Gippsland in Australia at the moment has never been better for growing vegetables,as different to lots of Eastern Australia we are lucky not to be in flood, keep the videos coming,we enjoy your cooking as well .
@finewinerob ... glad to hear ya'll are having a good season down there. It's a little cold here in Louisiana but it's winter time and we have to expect that. We are getting lots of rain (no flooding yet) in my area. Garden looks like a mud hole. LOL.....Donald
Me & the family enjoy your videos! We learn alot and have gained alot of knowledge on how to grow our garden. Thanks so much for all you do and keep it up!
Donald...your videos are not only entertaining but inspiring to a girl who wishes she had a green thumb. I'm a definite fan of yours. I also love LA but I've only been to New Orleans, the Garden District, Metairie and Houma.

@mrflyfishingak ... Hey Adam, if your other crops did good, other than just being curious, I really don’t see a need for it. But doing a soil test may give you a heads up on any problems that may be brewing out there such as way too much P or K fertilizer or PH problems. I grow my onions in the same soil as all the other vegetables and they do just fine......Donald
Hello Donald. It's good to hear your voice again in the start of a new year. It seems like an eternity between your video posts. I guess a large part of that is due to the interest that you spark with your viewers. I'm constanly checking for new uploads anytime I visit YouTube. I have learned loads of helpful information and techniques to make me a more successful gardener. Maybe it'll clear up soon. I guess it's human nature to never be satisfied with the conditions around us.
@AsphaltCowboy57 ... had a couple of problems with the computer and camera but finally got that fixed. I know it's January but it seems that the older I get the wetter and colder the winters become. Having to stay inside and not being able to do much outside is making me lazy. lol I need some nice sunny days. Hope you have a great year in the garden and loshepa.......Donald
I am in the same boat, Donald. Cold, wet, not much gardening at this time, so I haven't done much gardening videos either. Great to see you again, Donald. Looking forward to the New Year and our exchange of ideas. Still using your etoufee recipe!
@growingYourGrub ... hope it dries up so I can plant potatoes but it's not looking too good. Guess i'll be crying during the summer for lack of rain. lol......Donald
You've inspired me to try planting onions! (ok.. not from seed, I don't have the magic you do) But I am starting my humble seeds of other veggies here in Dallas.
I've been to Steubenville, its pretty there! about 30 min from Pittsburgh.
I like this mailbag video! very helpful!
I bought some Cherokee Purple tomato seeds today I hear its a tastey tomato. Hope its not too hot to grow where I live.
@gardenvespers777 ... you'll find that onions are real easy to grow especially from transplants. I'm going to try a few Brandywine myself this year. I hear they are the ones all other tomatoes are judged by. We'll see. Hope you have a great 2011 season too.........Donald
Well for some reason, mine (broccoli and cabbage( didn't do well last fall and finally the cold did them in. Just as the broccoli was starting to put heads on they froze and died. I started the seeds in flats in mid August...
The Morris Heading collards did very well and I just finished canning up a bunch of them last week. By the way...I've decided collards do better frozen than canned...the stench was like an old outhouse...
Good to see you back on board...I've checked frequently to see if you'd posted anything...I've got cabbage, broccoli and collards started in the greenhouse.
I will put them out early. Just testing to see what the earliest day is I can get them out and have them survive.
Looking forward to your videos this spring and summer.
@22justus2 ...I'm still undecided if I'm going to plant any broccoli, cauliflower or cabbage this spring. I still have cabbage in the garden right now. Carrots and greesn too.......Donald
Hi Donald, Thank you for posting again. I have tried your compost tea mixture, and I am sold. I planted some lettuce and spinich. They really were stunted maybe becuase of the cold. I used organic fertilizer and it did not work. But as soon as I used the compost tea I saw growth overnight. Overnight!!!! When you are waiting for the spring your videos help to get over the winter blues. So thank you for the videos. They really mean alot to alot of people.
@knower777 ... glad the tea work out for you. I've been using it for a couple of years now and it appears to work. Thanks for the kind words.......Donald
Happy New Year, Donald. Nice to see you back on the Youtube. Thanks for the great information. Can't wait for the weather to warm up so I can get back in the garden. I cleaned out my raised beds last week when it was still warm here in Ponchatoula. Planted a few herbs that should be fine in the cold.
I moved to a place and did not soil test. I did not get veggies till late in the season after I started putting ash from my fire pit, lawn clippings and other veggie mater all around my plants. Next year my soil will be perfect. I have very sandy soil and even the weeds have troble growing in my yard. I have a huge compost pile and put 4 inches of composting material all over where my veggies will be this spring.

answer: All bell peppers start green, but then turn a new color. They planted the red variety and didn't check on it until they started turning red. Eventhough they throught they bought a green, they didn't know they should harvest before they turn color.
so nice to see you. I cant wait for the dvd's to get here. I am jumpping up and down every time the mail man comes and he thinks I am happy to see him. LOL Its really cold here. I am so disapointed with my weather. -28 is too cold. for health reasons I cant even go to work when its -20. Very informative information. I am diffently going to use this.
@Praxxus55712 ...computer hard drive problems then dead camera battery, had to order new battery. Took forever to come in during the holidays. But I'm back. lol.......Donald
@btigtime2 ...Roux is 1 cup oil and 2 cups flour. Don't stop stiring until it's dark enough. Try medium heat or just a bit higher and you'll do just fine.......Donald
@1965blaze ...I ask the wife to write down the recipe, she said she would. Only thing is she doesn't measure anything in a recipe so it's just going to be about. Keep reminding me so I can keep reminding her. lol.......Donald
@webcajun thanks donald i dont measure either good fresh ingredients shouldnt be measured lol the more the better! thank you so much i became a subby on your forum!
keep making videos im from florida so i guess our wheather is differant. right now we are in the 50s low 30s suppose to freeze tonight. what would you recommentfor fertilizer to add in now to prep my small garden 6x6 what should i use? and how much ?
@1965blaze ...in a 6x6 or 36 sq. ft. about 1 lb. of 8-8-8 or 13-13-13 should work. This would give the P and K a little time to break down some before planting.......Donald
It wasn't a green one, just an immature red one, that's why! (I guess, but I HWhit9000 had the idea. Unless it was specific to one certain video.) Thanks for more good info!
webcajun is the best channel for tips and help for growing stuff in the garden. He knows everything and the videos are awesome. I say a big thanks to you as I have learned a lot.
I always enjoy watching your videos and learn a little from them. This old coot has even incorperated a few of your ways of doing things to my garden. Keep up the good work.
The red one came up but the green one didn't... Why? Sounds to me that someone planted the seeds from a red pepper and a green pepper. The red pepper seeds would germinate and grow but the seeds from the green pepper are not mature enough.
I was just thinking about ya the other day. I hadnt seen a video from ya in a while. Glad to see the new video today. I guess I need to get on over to the forums. Hope you had a wonderful Holiday Season. I cant wait till may comes so I can start gardening again. Covered in snow right now. I look forward to watching your gardening videos when spring returns for ya. Have a great one. -gerrit
@SevereIDAHO ... Hey Gerrit, had computer and camera problems which is why it been awhile. I'm looking forward to the gardening season too. It's cold and wet around here so not much to do outside. Hope you have a good year.........Donald
I noticed that too, green bell pepper seeds do not germinate. is that because they are sterile.

answer: All bell peppers start green, but then turn a new color. They planted the red variety and didn't check on it until they started turning red. Eventhough they throught they bought a green, they didn't know they should harvest before they turn color.

blaze
1965blaze 1 year ago
@1965blaze ...in a 6x6 or 36 sq. ft. about 1 lb. of 8-8-8 or 13-13-13 should work. This would give the P and K a little time to break down some before planting.......Donald

It wasn't a green one, just an immature red one, that's why! (I guess, but I HWhit9000 had the idea. Unless it was specific to one certain video.) Thanks for more good info!
