My dad was born when it was #1 also! I'm a little shocked that several people have watched (and commented) on this in the last few minutes-- I was just looking at the #1 songs when my parents and I were born. How did everyone else end up watching this now?
I could never leave my parents and some say I gave up a better life , or that I was overly sentimental. Ridiculous. There is only one mama and papa and there will never be another. Stay and enjoy and love them the best you can. Time away from those two precious souls is time that you will regret when they are gone forever. I have a daughter who has moved for work purposes, and I bless her, but pray that someday she does not feel the pain of regret. Priceless were the times spent with my Dad.
I love this song by Eddie and when I hear it I think of my Dad, I lost him in 1982.
Eddie also recorded a lovely song called My Mom, I guess he wanted to dedicate a song to his Mother. The lyrics are very simple, just a love song to the most important woman in his life. It would be nice if someone would post it so all of Eddie's fans can hear it.
This song really hits a nerve. My Pappa is gone since 1958. When I left home to go to Paris France to get married, I left Pappa in the back yard very upset because I was leaving home. Eddie Fisher is the only that I love who can sing this song. Thank you for letting me have a memory of my child hood. Happy New Year! 2012
Please to all the viewers who listen to this song and read this comment go and tell not only your father but mother to, how much you Love them now. I lost my mother in 1965 and my farther in 1978 and will regret to my dying day that did not tell them how much i Loved them both,it's to late now but i will always remember what wounderfull parents they were and only hope that i am as half as good as them. GOD BLESS YOU BOTH R.I.P ROBERT
@ronofnc I am @ronofnc I am 66 y.o. when I read stuff like you just said.. I sometimes have tears. Sounds as though you aren't holding his shortcomings against him. Good for you. Merry Christmas. See my post right near this one, I got lucky, with the parents I had.
My dad passed away in 1994. 75 y.o. I could not have asked for a better dad. Not perfect, but just wonderful to us kids and he loved my mom until the day he died. That's worth more than a billion dollars to me
I remember this song very well and thought Eddie was a great singer. I wish I had known my father but from what I have heard he was a drunk and let his large family go hungry. Thank God we all had a supportive mother. Because of him I have tried to be the best father possible to my 4 kids. Wherever you are dad I wish you well.
My father used to sing this song to me when I was 4 years old. Sweet memories! Today - 57 years later- my father has died and I will play this song on his funeral to honour him. Thanks for posting!
I never needed my father to hug me or to say how much he loved me, because they would all have been redundant. To me, I knew my father was the one and only best and most loving father in the world I could possibly have and I was the most lucky son in the world. Time eventually took him away, but he lives in my heart and have my unremitting respect and admiration.
I have searched long time for this song - and to honor my father who soon will die, I write these words - Dad you had a tough life, and i forgive you that you did not love me as I deserved to be - when you step over to the eternal circus where you here on earth once was world famous I hope you will find a little love for me too.
@TheAmasterofdisaster Go tell him what you just said here. Love is something we do by faith, not feeling. May god be with you over the Christmas Season, too. Could be this is too late

The music for this song was played at My Father in law's funeral. When it was played all the older members cried and the younger generation thoughts we had lost it. Not knowing the words that the song talked about. It was a special moment to celebrate a very special man.
This month it is 12 years since my Daddy left me I was a grandmother when he left but I still was not ready to let him go. the day after he died I turned on the car radio and Eddie Fisher was singing O My Papa I think this was a sign that my daddy was in a better place and sending me some love from up above Fathers are very important to little girls RIP Daddy I love you so
It figures that drugs were part of his not coming back. I watched him on TV in '83 while he tried a come back. It may have been on the Merv Griffith show. Someone who was watching with me said, "He's fried." It sure looked that way. Who would have left Connie Stevens when he did or Debbie Reynolds, for that matter?
@knightoftheroze he had several combacks. first in 1966 when he married connie stevens. agaisn in the 70s' 1974 i think his problem unfortunately is that he never could beat his drinking and drug problems. thats why connie stevens divorced him because he lied about being over the drugs and he wasnt. thats how i remember it. he also liked to fool around with other women. if i had connie stevens then i could never do that.
I remember my Dad sing this song when he still alive. Today is his 30th death anniversarry and I still cry whenever I hear this song. I love you Dad miss you a lot I will see you in the next life and I will tell you of all my accomplishment you wait for me I will be there soon. We will play basketball again and tell stories about my kids how smart they are. You will be proud of them.
going home someday, I really appreciate your comments, it seems we have something in common as far as dads' are concerned. too bad about your mum, she may have had a hard life herself. Apparently she did not stop the smiles he gave you.

@TGNolan01 - Hello - You may not have your Dad, but you have the treasured memories of his presence, his smiles and laughter, his gentle touch and kind ways. As for me, well, my memories of my Dad is of a man who had a hard life with no home comforts. My mum was a very hard, unloving person who made my Dads life a misery. I will always remember his smiles, the sound of his voice, his gentle ways and his passing.
Let's remember all Dads who are forgotten, especially on Father’s Day.
Oh my Papa to me your were so wonderful. When you took me on your kneee you turned my tears to laughter. I love you Papa. I will miss you till I am no longer here
my mom used to listen to this when i was very little. she told me it reminded her of her my grandfather who had died of cancer at a relatively young age. she always cries when ever this song plays. :(
To all you pro wrestling fans: This was the #1 song in the USA when Ted Dibiase, Sr. came into the world (January 18, 1954). The beginning of the Rock Era was a year and a half away.
My mother was likely the trumpet player..she did play this song with Edie Fisher and try to nap when your MOM is practicing a loud trumpet in a small Philly house
happy to remember the song that my EFL teacher offered me a few ( 20!) years ago I wish I cpould sing this song to my dear Dad! Never did it ! A shame! He was the best man I had ever met in my life
My dad used to play this on the trumpet. Beautiful! He passed away on this date, March 27, 1992. I came tonight to listen and to remember him. Thank you!
This song was popular when I was in grade school. One afternoon I was listening to the radio and this song was playing. My father had to fly to Washington DC on business that day. The song was interrupted for a news bulletin that a plane en route to Washington DC had crashed and there were no survivors. Fortunately within seconds of that bulletin my father called home to let us know he had taken an earler flight and was safely on the ground in DC. This song always reminds me of that incident
This song is on the new CD, "Jewish Soul"...also features Johnny Mathis , Tom Jones, Eartha Kitt, Jackie Wilson and many more doing Jewish songs...EXCELLENT!
Eddie Fisher sang Oh My Papa in his later years on stage. He sang it the last time I saw him perform in person in 1995. He could still hit the high notes in that song and any other one he sang. Maybe not as well as he did in the 50's but how many singers who were singing in the 50's can sing the same way today?
I saw Eddie when he tried a comeback sometime in the 90's, I was front row center and I yelled at him to sing O my papa....he turned to me and said "I can't reach the notes".....His voice in the 60's was supreme.
Eddie appeared at the Miami arena in the 90's and I sat in the front row. I was hanging on the stage and I yelled to Eddie "sing O my papa"....he looked at me and said I can't reach the notes,,,,he was in his 70's...He passed away a few months latter.
"gone are the days when he would take me on his knee....." This song reminds me so much of my Grandfather....I always get a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes when I hear it. Thank you Mr. Fisher!
You know its him with the first word out of his mouth....And, as someone here remarked, the purist voice in the business--his voice timber is like something from a cloud--it sours always upwards, it seems. Easily could have been a opera star on part with Richard Tucker. Thank you Mr. Fisher.
I remember singing this to my dad when I was small. I lost him @ 11 but this still reminds me of all the great times. Thanks to my friend for finding this for me, I couldn't remember who sang it.
I keep watching this video over and over again. Eddie was so so so good. When I listen to that voice, I just melt! God gave to that man a singing voice for the rest of all HISTORY!
This was my Dad’s favorite song. He sang it to me as a child and told me that it reminded him of his Dad (my Grandfather who had passed away before I was born and just around the time that Eddie Fisher release this superb song).
Fast forward nearly 50 years…My Dad passed away a few months ago and every time I listen to this song I think of him smiling and singing these lyrics to me which he loved so much. Here’s to you Dad… Oh my Papa, to me you were so wonderful, to me you were so grand!
No matter about Eddie, Deb, and Liz........... We all need to love our Papas... Mine is 82........ but he will live eternally in every breath I take and in my soul forever.
My aunty played this song at my Pop's funeral. My family and I have been listening to it ever since... It's so true xXx Love you Poppy xox Your only grand daughter
What A Voice-Forget everything else and recognize that this Man could sing like most everybody in life could only dream of. And I discovered his rare talent late in my life.... Am I am 59 years old!
Read what his daughter Carrie Fisher has to say about him. Those that want to separate behaviour from talent, feel free to do so. But, he was no My Papa to his family.
@Baruchyoseph8 He was singing about HIS Papa. Carrie Fisher is a neurotic basket case who needs to grow up & quit whining. I never even KNEW who my Papa was. At least she had that.
This is very emotional, and some others on youtubes are too. But wasn't there another one that went all the way [musically and emotionally]? (but this is the best i have just now found on youtubes, closely followed by one or two others).
Actually, i take this back. It seems to me that this is indeed the actual origional, one-in-a-century historical performance of 2 and a half minutes, which brought him immortality. Everythin else is only an attempt to copy it.
I had to come back. its 1953 .EDDIE FISHER rest in peace you gave us OH MY PAPA enough said . WE WILL ETERNALLY love ya Youre up thee now with Eddie Cantor my alltime idol. TOMK tv film historian
Eddie was an integral part of my childhood. His singing went right to my heart and I used to wish that I was him. I sang his songs a thousand times with my father who played the piano. This is a major loss. He had the purist voice of all time and when I hear it on these videos I am transported to myself as a child singing my heart out. He was better than all the others. I am very sad.

OH MY GOD EDDIE FISHER died OH MY PAPA IM Devastated. This tv ftilm historian can tell you this song was my favorite as a kid , it stayed with me 60 yrs. I think i knew this song before i knew my parents lol. only 82 hip surgery infection. so sad Eddie Cantor my idol discovered this great singer. Todays papers only mentioned OH MY PAPA in passing hey we all know this song was EDDIE FISHER What a song ill always cherish it even on cd. Rest your soul Eddie We will always love. OH MY PAPA TOMK
Eddie Fisher was the chick magnet for all time. Debbie Reynolds, Liz Taylor, Connie Stevens. WOW. I tip my hat to you, Eddie, and R.I.P. for all time.
I was just talking to a family member two weeks ago about Eddie Fisher. I remember this song; my Mother and Aunt would play it on the "RCA Victrola" all the time.
His children will listen to this with tears in their eyes in latter years. His personal life was turbulent, but he had a wonderful voice and his children loved him. This song brings tears to my eyes for my beloved Papa' who could indeed 'change my tears to laughter'. No problem seemed insurmountable after talking to him. I think also of my dear mother who listened to this song with tears for a young father she adored and only had in her life for seven years when he died suddenly..
@angeloschild From what I've read, I doubt his daughter Carrie will miss him. She seems to have had issues with him and even threatened to change her last name to Reynolds. I think anybody who ever heard this gets teary eyed, not neccessarily for the father they had, but for the one they didn't have.
@19111ellyc I agree with what you say, but, grieving for a parent is visceral, not subject to whether or not he or she was a good parent. Many love them in spite of their defects. In Carrie Fisher's case (and some of his other children may feel the same way) the mourning is for the father they wish they had, and may have had at times, and the opportunity that will never be for him and for them, but I am sure that each one in his or her own way is grieving.
Just saw this on CNN. The only thing I love bout the 20's is the music, clothes, and the women. wish I could go back in time and live in the 20's see how they used to do music and movies.
Another sad day for the music world. Eddie stood shoulder to shoulder with the great crooners of yesteryear. A smooth sophisticated performer, he was enormously entertaining to his millions of fans worldwide. Those sanctimonious racists who are crawling out of the woodwork to criticise his showbiz lifestyle and Jewish background are very sad little individuals.
Surely anyone who had a loving father will shed a tear or two or three upon hearing this wonderful song performed by the greatest crooner of his generation!
::smiles warmly:: My mom would sing this to me when I was little as a lullaby. When my own dad passed away for years ago, we had it played at his funeral. Such a sad, sweet song.
I remember how popular this #1 song was back in 1953/1954. Reminds me of my dad (1915-2002). The video of Eddie singing is great... the early photos of Eddie and two of his wives is unnecessary and detracts from the great lyrics of the song. ♫♥♫
Lovely musical performance!

You know its him with the first word out of his mouth....And, as someone here remarked, the purist voice in the business--his voice timber is like something from a cloud--it sours always upwards, it seems. Easily could have been a opera star on part with Richard Tucker. Thank you Mr. Fisher.

Read what his daughter Carrie Fisher has to say about him. Those that want to separate behaviour from talent, feel free to do so. But, he was no My Papa to his family.
Baruchyoseph8 1 year ago
@Baruchyoseph8 He was singing about HIS Papa. Carrie Fisher is a neurotic basket case who needs to grow up & quit whining. I never even KNEW who my Papa was. At least she had that.

This is very emotional, and some others on youtubes are too. But wasn't there another one that went all the way [musically and emotionally]? (but this is the best i have just now found on youtubes, closely followed by one or two others).

@violin614
Actually, i take this back. It seems to me that this is indeed the actual origional, one-in-a-century historical performance of 2 and a half minutes, which brought him immortality. Everythin else is only an attempt to copy it.

I think also of my dear mother who listened to this song with tears for a young father she adored and only had in her life for seven years when he died suddenly..
angeloschild 1 year ago
@angeloschild From what I've read, I doubt his daughter Carrie will miss him. She seems to have had issues with him and even threatened to change her last name to Reynolds. I think anybody who ever heard this gets teary eyed, not neccessarily for the father they had, but for the one they didn't have.
19111ellyc 1 year ago
@19111ellyc I agree with what you say, but, grieving for a parent is visceral, not subject to whether or not he or she was a good parent. Many love them in spite of their defects. In Carrie Fisher's case (and some of his other children may feel the same way) the mourning is for the father they wish they had, and may have had at times, and the opportunity that will never be for him and for them, but I am sure that each one in his or her own way is grieving.

Yes, Topaz Dupree, The photos of Liz & Debbie detract from the quality of the song & singer...
I remember hearing that Nat King Cole, another truly great singer of the era, had turned this one down - which he later regretted!...
A song like this today would be viewed as "corny", and wouldn't gain the acceptance it deserves...

Surely anyone who had a loving father will shed a tear or two or three upon hearing this wonderful song performed by the greatest crooner of his generation!

I remember how popular this #1 song was back in 1953/1954. Reminds me of my dad (1915-2002). The video of Eddie singing is great... the early photos of Eddie and two of his wives is unnecessary and detracts from the great lyrics of the song. ♫♥♫
TopazDupree 1 year ago
@Topaz Dupree I agree; the photos of Mr. Fisher with his wives has nothing to do with this song, and should not have been included.
