This is SUCH an improvement on the other offering that is listed here and I saw this performance and she was magnificent in portrayal of the character as well as vocally. Brava.
She is forcing and pushing, but does does it very well. Also the top sounds like an artificial extension of a not very high voice. Good but just not great. BUT of course like every single person on here this is just a personal opinion no more and no less. The brilliant thing is no single voice in opera has ever pleased every listener. .......and perhaps we should be thankful for that otherwise we would have nothing to disagree about!
I saw Sills sing the Three Queens, Rosina, Adina, Norina, plus other roles. As much as I liked her I thought there was something lacking as the queens. After listening to Netrebko as Bolena from Vienna. seeing her at the Met last week and also up close and personal with the HD broadcast I now realize it was warmth. She wowed me from Vienna, she gave me goosebumps at the Met and I almost cried at the end of the boradcast. Sills was a great singer, but not so great as Bolena.
@tiadejbk1 Sills had a light soprano voice which was great for the light roles like Adina, Amina etc. Anna Bolena needs a voice with a lot more weight and richness in the middle and low range which is why Netrebko is perfect for it. Not everyone's voice is suitable for every role. Your instinct is right to have noticed the differences even though you may not have known the technical reasons for it. Richness and warmth in the voice repose in the middle and low range not at the top end.
This is horrible! Horrible! Flat -- breathy -- strident -- no coloratura -- strained! After hearing this, I have to hear Beverly Sills' "Anna Bolena" just to remind myself what true opera singing is about!
@Jimburu Naturally ,Anna Bolena is not typical belcanto role for the coloratura,it 's sooner more dramatic one, which demands appropriate ability in the low and middle registers, which mrs. Sills could never deliver with her birds additional embellishments.Mrs. Sills example is not quite good for the role at all. When listening to Sills,I feel something unnatural with her transported high notes. Her singing reminds me screams of laboratory mouse before it's death, then the character of Anne Boleyn.
@petelovesbevsills The same way it can be said about the dull and envious Sills worshipers with their petty attacks on AN, who are not worthy a button of speaking about Netrebko. When one needs to listen to " Queen of the night", Bev is fine, but not in the case of Anna Bolena. D'you feel the differance? If you don't, please stay away from AN , in your shell world of the past. Thanks and regards.
Omg not only she does not skip the lower notes she actually accentuates them - what a magnificent switch to lower register at 0:14 - this woman actually sings in FULL VOICE what Sills, Sutherland and Caballe never managed to sing in its entire range - this is totally and utterly AMAZING
The entire part is sun in FULL VOICE -she does not cut to less in any part - dangerous dangerous but soooooooooo incredibly exciting to be listening to Donizetti sung this way - NOT SINCE CALLAS!!!
@LohengrinT I dont think that her way of singing is dangerous for her voice because she resonates sound well with her body down to diaphragm even when she sings belcanto (unlike many other singers including Callas). This vocal technique is safe and provide big ample power, but singing "small fast notes" demands additional efforts
I completely understand what you mean and partly you are correct - my "Sixth sense" though, where my entire Opera knowledge comes from, tells me she is a bit stretching here
@LohengrinT I think that she is stretching a bit because she is singing relatively low notes in "full voice" here - this needs much more air (breathing) than singing high notes
I dont mean she sounds stretched in anyway (like Scotto for example) but her instrument is very beautiful - it indeed scares me to hear her sing this part so full voice
@LohengrinT She cuts the first aria in half. And the entire performance we could hear a loud breath btw every musical phrase. She was the only one with such noise in the house on the 26 in the entire cast. I am not sure why she grinds her teeth when she says the word pardon in Italian. At no pointe I was able to feel sympathetic towards her character, it was always the star on stage with a big pay check. Somehow the loud breath almost disappear in the recordings. But I agree, beautiful voice.
Yes, yes, yeeeeees. Brava Anna. Great job, well done!!! Steady and firm right through with a rich, lush tone. Ascending trills great, very well enuciated and solidly held. High notes equally solid and steady and the middle and low ranges much firmer and well supported. Much better than anyone since Callas. Can't wait to see the movie transmission on Oct. 15
Netrebko is indeed an excellent singer, however I am not convinced that this is the best role for her…
