This is one of the best movies I've ever seen, interesting to get contrasting opinions on it. While I don't agree the love story is corny I can see why people would think that. And the part where the blond jumps off the cliff at the end is heartbreaking, gets me every time.
@squamish4244 Indians are generally the most boring topic for anything ever. Maybe it's from all the crappy books we had to read in elementary school about indians, but I just have a natural aversion to them in media. Except for Westerns.
@qwuezalothus I agree! I love this movie. I never will understand movie critics. The love story was great and DDL and Madeline Stowe have great chemistry. Everything about the movie was good especially DDL, what a wonderful actor.
They cut out 18 mins because the studio guys thought it was too long without a well know actor at the time, fuck that, i wanna see the missing footage.
Stupid guy. It is loosely based on a book written by James Fenimore Cooper in 1826. Not some movie of the 30's. There are 4 books in the Leather Stocking story line.
@patteel Worst critics ever. Ebert you a*****e. The best argument is that today nobody remebers that Black fucking Robe! Not to mention music...And they didn't mention Cooper! WTF? Secondly Magua didn't plot revenge for ,,the way they've broken their word with Indians". Siskel didn't even understand the movie... And I know why they felt the love scenes were corny. Unromantic Ebert just fucks his wife with the smile on his face without saying anything! One of the best movies!
This is a truly great film and I also thought the love story felt tacked on in comparison with everything else taking place and especially at the very end when they just *have* to kiss after Chingachgook says he is the last of his tribe! But the violence didn't feel 'Hollywood' to me, it is brutally realistic and leaves no doubt as to what tribal warfare was really like. Yet at the same time we see the dignity of the Indians and the lush beauty of the natural world they lived in. Outstanding.
This is my favorite movie. Everytime I watch this movie I want to go outside and build a cabin and run through the woods. When ever this movie is over I cannot stop looking outside into the trees and beyond even though I am in my house on a cul-de-sac surrounded by noise and useless junk that people call stuff.
This is my favorite movie. Everytime I watch this movie I want to go outside and build a cabin and run through the woods. Both recommend the picture, but they miss the minutia of it's making. Sure, they watch it, perhaps they don't research it. I did find the romance believable. I found the portrayal of Indians well done, since there were many tribesmen from all over the country on-location advising them.
No fault to Roger and Gene, they probably did not know that. I have great respect for the men, as I have followed their career in Chicago, both in print and on WTTW. (OK, so Rog picked the wrong paper).

Every fucking one of you bashing both Ebert and Siskel: You have got to remember that they were paid to do this. That's the job of a film critic. By bashing both Siskel and Ebert, you're saying that should be no film critics. They are here because they have studied film and they know how to review a film.
I hate those pompous critics. First off all i'm shocked they didn't mention the ending part where Russell Means kills Magua. Anyone who doesn't admit to the awesomeness of that scene, is just lying to them selves to seem more "anti-violence". On another subject. They don't know how to see a movie and criticize like they haven't seen a thousand more movies than us "normal" watchers.
Why don't these guys just say either "this movie sucks" or "it's fucking great!" Their full detailed analysis is for battling nerds that no one listens to or remembers. Sorry Siskel: just kidding (RIP).
While lonely freak fans of this ugly monster Ebert jack off, I'll tell you the real deal: Ebert was a failed smut writer who also was a drunkard (it's even in his bio on Wik) who is now even more ugly (no easy feat) and needs publicity so he knocks the newly dead. I'd say Ebert and the losers debating the merits of old movies are history except no one will remember him soon. He has CANCER baby!
I loved every bit of this movie. "Corny love story"? That criticism is incomprehensible. Cora is shocked and disgusted at Nathaniel when he leaves the bodies of his friends unburied. Her love develops as her understanding does at the necessity to adapt to this harsh, new land, America. I think the critics fail to appreciate this movie on its own terms. There was a time when such love stories were as new as this land was.
Roger is right about the violence, and they're both right about the stupid love theme. I can't watch this movie again because the violence is so toned down, where there isn't even blood on the tomahawks.
So did Sergio Leone, and he's considered one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. Watch "Heat," "Collateral," "Manhunter," and ESPECIALLY "The Insider" and tell me that those films were just schemes and not reliant on story. Michael Mann can balance substance and style perfectly and that's what makes him one of the best filmmakers out there. But I will agree that "The Last of the Mohicans" relied more on style, obiously in the last twenty minutes which are incredibly powerful.
@CitizenKANE2277 Michael Mann is my favorite filmmaker, He is a total genius, Manhunter is my favorite movie it's a masterpiece and so is Heat and the Insider they had everything, Great Direction, Depth, Excellent story, Great acting, Fantastic music, Style basically everything but the kitchen sink.
I Think That This Is One Romantic Movie, And I Just Loved Every Bit Of That Movie, I was a little upset that soldiar guy was sacraficing himself, just because he knew that older british girl was falling in love with the older indian (i'm not talking about the elderly old man indian one), and the younger indian, he got killed because he was trying to save that young british girl, and that young british girl, she killed herself because she was falling in love with that young indian.
@TheFryingFish Ummm... Dude... James Fenimore Cooper was born in New Jersey. His father was a congressman. He went to Yale. He joined the United States Navy... If you are going to criticise someone, make sure you know their history or you just look like a dickhead. So can you please revisit your comment stating "He never set foot in North America" please.
@CoolerKing37 Do not tell me how I think. As an over 40 year director, actor, writer & currently adapting a book for a succesful indie producer who just inked a deal for distribution of his last two finished & award winning movies, I have my own ideas. Cooper is considered as one of the best American authors. His skill you should not diminish. If you are not up to the task go film a lesser piece of, ugh, er, well, hmmm, material. Leave incredible writing in the hands
@charles43110 I'm not telling you how to "think" and I didn't "diminish" Cooper's writings. I was saying that as film critics they don't need to read the original book for them to be able to review a movie and point out the film's flaws.
And why'd you list me your resume? I could really care less what you've done. Quit trying to impress people on YouTube.
Odd - for the most part I hate Hollywood love stories, and am actually quite cynical about love in general. But I've always been very touched by this particular one. They always struck me as two people not so much in love as consoling each other in a time of death. And I always admired the figure of Duncan - he could have been rid of his rival and made off with the girl, but instead gave his own life so she could escape with the man she REALLY loved. . .
Why the hell are commenters ragging on this film? Anyone who doesn't think this is one of the best historical epics of the past 25 years has no taste in movies. Some of the folks who dislike it probably saw it when they were little kids and think it's an "old movie" and didn't understand it. Oh, @AugustHovel - would Russell Means (who took over the Mayflower & led the Second Battle of Wounded Knee) have agreed to star in it if it were so disrespectful? And yes, Ebert, it's a "romantic" epic.
Eh, cliche movie about Native Americans at best. But then again, what can you except when a bunch of Jewish Hollywood writers get together and say "let's make a movie about indians!"
This is one of the best movies I've ever seen, interesting to get contrasting opinions on it. While I don't agree the love story is corny I can see why people would think that. And the part where the blond jumps off the cliff at the end is heartbreaking, gets me every time.

My God these guys are the biggest dick heads!!!
Best movie ever!!!
It's a story of how culture love, life and family is torn apart by war...
It's severly emotional and romantic in the ideas that love will survive and endure through the hardships of war.
spotymonkey 2 years ago
Why are they dickheads for voicing their opinions?
Would you prefer they voice YOUR opinion?
They're saying it's a good film and their mild criticisms -especially of the corny, robotic love story- are both perceptive and valid.
Nothing is perfect; the movie still kicks ass.

This is one of the greatest movies of all time from about 100 perspectives.
And the love story isn't stupid, it is a beautiful impressionistic picture drawn on the canvas of early american beauty and truth.
