  • That smile, it's so winsome.

  • MODEST MOUSE MEETS DON MCLEAN

  • Going to Georgia.....

  • \m/ O_O \m/

  • I'll put this simply, This song has Emotion...

FAR too many people take that statement for granted with any music, but this song actually has it. This performance sets a high bar for songs that have a lot of emotion... that bar will never be reached by the unending horde of popular "artists" that do not deserve their fame.

  • @thechad899 Well said darling.

  • You know, until I heard this song today, I never really understood why so many TMG fans liked it so much, but after falling in love and doing long distance, I finally really understand and connect to it. I know exactly what John means when he says "the most remarkable thing about you standing in the doorway is that it's you and that you're standing in the doorway". Thank you, John, for being able to put to words every feeling I've ever experienced in my life.

  • This just gave me chills.

  • I love the live version quite a bit more then the studio version.

  • Aesop Rock sent me here. I never heard of this guy, and now I cant get enough!!

  • So freaking awesome.

  • This is hands down my favourite recording/performance of this song.

    The world shines...

  • 5 people don't have two big hands and a heart pumping blood and a 1967 colt .45 with a busted safety catch

  • @Ivellios45 That probably a bigger group than your estimate.

  • I'm from Macon County, GA. It's capable of doing this to one.

  • how the hell does he smile through that song?

  • well im Australian and love the Mountain Goats

  • First and still all time fav mountian goats song of the 51+ albums owned.

  • Every song John Darnielle sings feels like having an unforgettable conversation

  • To see him and the dudes perform right in front of you is a necessary life experience. He has so much energy projecting outward that it's fucking dumbfounding. And don't be surprised if you see people weeping like little babies, it's natural.

  • @Bleepbloopd

    I have, and I did.

  • AND YOU SMILE AS YOU EASE THE GUN FROM MY HAND I'M FROZEN WITH JOY RIGHT WHERE I STAND

  • i motherfucking love the mountain goats

  • I love this song so much...he reminds me SO much of Loudon Wainwright III, which, believe me is a compliment. John Darnielle is AWESOME!!

  • The line "The most remarkable thing about you standing in the doorway is that it's you and that you're standing in the doorway" sounds like a sentence from a John Green book. As I incidentally explore John Green's life more and more (In addition to listening to the Mountain Goats, I'm looking into Kenyon for college and their literature sounds like his style) I understand what makes him the brilliant man that he is.

  • This is the first Mountain Goats song I ever heard- hanging out with a new friend, three doors down in Jenkins Hall, drunk and smoking a hookah. I can't remember what that kid's name was, but he had good taste in music.

  • This man is a legend of a poet. I've only heard three of his songs so far and I can already see that. No question.

  • @balognaofwin Oh, you are in for such a treat my friend. I almost envy you your coming discoveries. I may just go back through all of my old tMG music to rediscover old lost favorites.

  • he's like a mad scientist of words

  • Usually, when I find a band I like, I'll buy two or three songs and then forget about them in a month. I have spent over forty bucks on songs by The Mountain Goats. John Darnielle's lyrics are worth every cent.

  • Hey I do I do.....But I know what you mean, I'm always auditioning them for my friends..I always start with the funy ones like jenny, or the sign or color in....

  • 4 people don't wanna go to Georgia

  • best love song ever

  • "Going to Georgia"? Haven't you seen the movie Deliverance? Just don't get lost in the woods, and act like you're not a yankee

  • 2:35 BEST FACE EVER LOL i love john!

  • "and you smile as you ease the gun from my hand and i'm frozen with joy right where i stand"

I love this line, simple yet meaningful.

    Best song ever.

  • @slayerxofx1xCA

    And that's a terrible thing.

  • Adore

  • All people who have seen John Darnielle in person deserve to be envied.

  • My friend started a TMG cover band.Needless to say I killed him :)

  • John Darnielle is such a good writer that it actually infuriates me.

  • i do.

  • What chords is he playing? All the tabs ive looked up sounds wrong, such A great song though I wish I could play it.

  • @RECHAVEZ He only plays three chords in this song, D, A, and G. The A is sometimes "fancy" by leaving the ring finger in the D chord and letting the e ring open as you move the index and middle to the A shape.

  • Thank you very much!

  • What hole in the ground are you from, justinjrozinek?

  • One of the best living song writers.

  • Wow. This man never fails to send shivers down my spine. I wish I was there for this.

  • @powerage112 and @haircut74

I could not agree more :)

  • My most basic goal in life is to be able to find someone to drive at night with, listening to music like this. Imagining driving along the east-west interstates so that once we hit the end of the road, after a while, we can turn around and do it again. There's a lot to see and hear in the world, it's unfortunate how difficult it can be to find someone to share it all with.

  • @powerage112 you and me both, friend.

  • @powerage112 I think that's every sensible person's dream. I can't see it coming true for me though

  • I love the audiences' gasps when that smart ass interupted

  • I was there with the little garage door in the back of the shop raised up just a little alcove with a stool and a mic and him playing; this was an amazing place to be. The heckler smelled strongly of bad beer, and eventually wandered out. It was so jam packed in there.

  • I'm a big fan of the Atom & His Package take on this song as well! Love the MG's

  • the passion is breathtaking.

  • he handled that heckler very well

  • The way he sings really loud is just perfect.

  • Sometimes this song makes things easier.

  • Infuckingcredible.

  • Goose Bumps.

    All Over.

  • i looked at someone i love very much and held his hand and looked into his eyes and smiled to this song

    <3

  • THE BEST!

  • I just love how he talks absolutely nothing like how he sings.

  • "the most remarkable thing about coming home to you, is the feeling of being in motion again."

    ...beautiful.

  • heya, brand new fan loving this

  • haha, when he plays it in this key, it's the same chord progression as Crane Wife 3. I giggled.

  • I know we have the worst audiences ever, but please come to AZ sometime soon, I missed you the last time.

  • I can't wait for them to come to Georgia Nov 21st. Your always welcomed here Mountain Goats.

  • What was the name of the song they played on the Colbert Report this week?

  • ah i didnt know they were on Colbert Report! what was the occasion, a new album?

  • ive never met a person who even knows about the mountain goats let alone listens to them or likes them one day i just want to meet some person somewhere who knows who John Darnielle is and thinks as highly of him as i do. That would make my day.

  • I love the Mountain Goats. I'm now going to spread the word :)

  • Lots of Aussies love the Mountain goats... an alternative radio station JJJ picked them up years ago and made them a feature. They have toured here a few times as well

  • @justinjrozinek I'm on my way.

  • @justinjrozinek Dude, just PM my sister, ClemTheTangerine. She listens to them like every day.

  • @justinjrozinek That would be my father and me.

  • I LOVE this man! have since I was 16. JD can help get you through some of the most difficult times of your life. Some cling to Jesus, I cling to The Mountain Goats.

  • @WEtranceLA can't agree more my friend...he's gotten me through some tough times

  • @justinjrozinek Me too.

  • @justinjrozinek you must not get out much

  • @justinjrozinek God, me too. Even when I do meet someone who "likes" The Mountain Goats or listens to them, there's always this moment where I get SO excited and clasp their hands in mine and expect basically that they hold John Darnielle in as high esteem as I do (which is like spot #1 in my list of life-changing people) and... they always say something like, "Oh, yeah they're pretty good." Or, "Who's John Darnielle?"

Maybe we'll run into each other someday and make each others' days. :P

  • @justinjrozinek hey guy i know who they are and i love em

  • @justinjrozinek We are out here, friend.

  • @The6stringKid indeed

  • @justinjrozinek i finaly spoke to someone today that knew the goats. but it was the first time other than the girl who had originaly put me on to them and the 1 person who I then showed them to. But that's it. I know what you mean. they are a very obscure band.

  • @justinjrozinek That happened to me, and that person is the love of my life.

    Never give up hope.

  • @justinjrozinek try and make friends with some nerdfighters (look up the vlogbrothers). John Green is a big Mountain Goats fan and i'm sure plenty of nerdfighters are too :)

  • My Favorite Mountain Goats song!

  • This just sounds so damn good every time I hear it. Excellent!

  • this version>studio version

  • John is the best singer/songwriter of this generation

  • Great Stuff --- fantastic -- Thanks!!

  • Was just reminiscing that we discovered The Mountain Goats through Atom and His Package's cover of this song (and The Seed Song). hee!

  • i fucking love those covers!

  • By Odin's beard, the mountain goats are so freakin' awesome! They're, that is John, are so metal...you know, in their hearts, they're freaking metal!

  • thanks for all these videos mocarrion, so good to see some good quality live Mountain Goats. probably never get to see em live in Ireland 8(

  • Do they never come and play in Ireland? I now live in Ireland and have consistently missed Darnielle for a good long while in England before that.We should force the man to play.

    Kidnap?

  • unfortunately they don't. but i live in ireland too, and i went to london to see them last september, and i just saw them in manchester three days ago. you should come with, next time i hop off somewhere to go see john.

  • Certainly.Whereabouts are you in Ireland? I'm in Belfast.

    It's rocking.

  • Me too! Oh man, that's awesome. Hey, you should also check out the video I just uploaded of tMG in Mancs.

  • Thank you so much mocarrion :D This is prob. one of the best live shows I've seen on YT.

  • lol dude in the front is an asshole

  • "The most remarkable thing about you standing in the doorway is that it's you and that you're standing in the doorway" is one of the most brilliant lyrics ever written.

I can see why he's sick of playing this song but it's so rich with meaning and it means so much to people I don't see how he'll ever be able to stop playing it.

  • Speaking of which, get the fuck out of my doorway. And put down the cat.

  • Hahaha

  • I agree with it being an amazing lyric. It's just fucking awesome. Stuff like this makes me want to simply write

  • @TheMysteriousMrZ He played this last week when he was in Atlanta, it made me so happy.

  • it brings tears to the eye

  • This is the first time I've ever heard this song live where you can actually hear him singing over the audience.

  • this man loves music

  • goddamn, is there anything better in the world than the music of john darnielle?

  • Perhaps the music of Bob Dylan, but it's really close :)

But this song really hits home for me because I have a dear friend in Georgia that I really want to go see :(

  • beating chelsea 2 nil in the league on sunday, but other than that not much....

  • My favorite one is "going to bolivia" from SWEDEN

  • If he didn't want to do songs too many times, maybe the man needs to stop writing such damn good songs.

    It's simple really.

  • *sigh* I'd love to go to Georgia right now to see an old friend of mine. *sigh again*

  • i think he often looks like crispin glover.....especially at this set.

P.S. is there a just audio recording of this

    floating around the web?

  • you can rip the audio from this. just google 'rip youtube audio' and pick a website

  • He looks so pained when he's starting off the song! Like 'Oh god, I have to play this song *again*'

Great song, but I'm sad that he's so sick of playing it.

  • he once said he wished he'd never written it - except that people love it so much

  • I love the song, but I see his point. He wrote it ages ago, and tMG fans get obnoxious about requesting this at shows. I understand wanting to play stuff you haven't played a trillion times, or wanting to play the new stuff that you're actually excited about playing.

But goddamn, if this song isn't phenomenal, I don't know what is.

  • this song makes me cry

  • There are very few songwriters who can pull off the "Standing in the doorway" line. John is one of them.

  • best f'in living songwriter

  • i agree

  • Looks like my old communications/media teacher. That guy was rad.

  • John Darnielle bears a remarkable resemblance to Brian Wilson crossed with

    Brian Ferry of Roxy Music.

He also looks a little like that Irish actor in the movie with Kaiser Soshei, or something like that.

    Sincerely,

    The Legendary Danny O'Doul

  • You rock butt for posting this. Weehoo!

  • Amazing. I love that man.
