sand? why didn't you use sand? sand is used commercially for filtering out stuff! Rocks/gravel is the final stage, not the first stage, first large mechanical separation, then sand filtering. you could do: bottom to top: gravel, napkin, LOT of sand, napkin, cotton (top). = win.
