I've seen these guys in Lubbock in 2006. It was a good show but I heard a rumor that Jerry Cantrell had a meltdown during the show. Does anybody remember that besides me??
I'm not saying DuVall is a bad singer --- I'm just saying that surely they could have gotten a better singer if they'd actually tried harder. The verses sound like a Vegas lounge singer and he could have done a better job with it if he'd tried to sing it like a friggin' Rock singer. He also gets a little pitchy at times here. He doesn't have the growl/emotion in his voice that Layne did. Also wondering why Jerry isn't doing the "ooh" part with him unless his vocal range was/has gone.

I served in the Marines (1991-1995), Mr. Cantrell. I humbly accept your dedicating this song to veterans! I used to listen to this song all the time when it came out.

Because Cantrell is the primary song writer and he can do what he wants with his songs. If you don't like how the new singer sings differently than Layne then simply don't listen. Don't suppose to know what the best decision is for the surviving 3/4 of a band.

Will Apple change its name since Steve Jobs died though he was the 'frontman' of the company? 3/4 of the band including the primary song writer still survives and they didn't release anything as Alice in Chains for 8 years after Layne's death, longer than the life of most new bands. That is showing respect and reverence to the loss of their friend and bandmate.

For the record Jerry Cantrell is Alice In Chains...Layne was an amazingly unique voice, but Jerry was the other half of that voice considering he sang most of the songs with Layne. Also wrote everything, including alot of lyrics and vocal patterns. Talk shit. New singer is amazing.

Damn Will you need vocal lessons. "You know he ain't gonna die" is sung terribly here. He is squeezing when he should be expanding and he is definitely not singing from the diaphragm but only from the throat. The rest of the song was OK, but "he ain't gonna die" vocal kills it for me, for the aforementioned reasons.

Layne might have been good. But that doesn't mean someone else can't take his place. Honestly, after about 93, Layne couldn't compare to this guy. So shut the fuck up.

DUvall is not a good singer. Im not saying that cause he's not as good as Layne. Nobody will ever compare to Layne. Im saying it because he truly can't sing. He's often out of tune and when it comes to hitting the high notes he sounds like he is sick. AIC made a mistake on him in my opinion. Cantrell can't really sing either so it's a double whammy. I love AIC but they really should've put more thought and time into finding a better singer.
@jdre1979 I'm not too sure you have paid much attention to the sound of old AIC with the way you're down playing Cantrell's voice. It's very obvious he's no Layne, but those two harmonizing together laid a whole new foundation with rock music. Listen to the unplugged album again.
@Christiantodd1 I agree the harmonies make the old AIC great, but I also believe almost anyone can harmonize with Layne Staley cause his voice is just that good. That being said Cantrells voice was decent at a point in time, and it may just be that its getting worse with age....It happens and I can deal with his voice. And Im not trying to bash the band cause I love them, but I just cant get into Duval. He's just not a good singer.

I don't hate Duvall, but he's just not the voice and emotion the band needs. I think if they searched a bit they could find someone who was a better fit. Hell, I've never understood why they didn't just continue with Jerry doing lead vocals.
I'm not hating on Duvall but Staley's pain in his voice made me connect with Alice in Chains so much more. R.I.P Staley!! You are definitely missed probably by half the crowd... but Duvall is okay I just think it's Rock N Roll to him which it is but with Staley that Rock was realer for me!
I have no problem with this band or with Duvall singing with them, or even with him singing AIC songs. But I do think they should not have used the AIC name when they put this band together. AIC died with Layne Staley and it should have been buried with him. They can call themselves whatever they want and play whatever songs they want, but they're not Alice in Chains. Led Zeppelin didn't keep playing with another drummer, and Joy Division came back as New Order and they had great success.

Layne was so talented, but I can see why Jerry Cantrell picked Duvall.
I'm happy they are going on. The music scene today is better with AIC.

How can people say that "I prefer AIC alive with this asshole than dead without Layne..." You lost your minds, I'm certain that AIC could find a singer so much better than Duvall! To me AIC can revive with another vocalist, but not with this guy! So dude, I'm sorry but open your fuckin eyes and see that it isnt AIC and admit that they arent alive! I think they should add someone who reminds somehow the great of all time Layne. duvall makes those songs sound like a shit, where is the passion of the lead singer ?, where is the hiding heart screaming and pain sound like our muse Layne Staley.wish to find someone like him at my life as a friend or a muscian or my self or whatever. original alice music comes from a deep pain from the heart or just from the heart, this is not the pop scene. Damn Will you need vocal lessons. "You know he ain't gonna die" is sung terribly here. He is squeezing when he should be expanding and he is definitely not singing from the diaphragm but only from the throat. The rest of the song was OK, but "he ain't gonna die" vocal kills it for me, for the aforementioned reasons.

DUvall is not a good singer. Im not saying that cause he's not as good as Layne. Nobody will ever compare to Layne. Im saying it because he truly can't sing. He's often out of tune and when it comes to hitting the high notes he sounds like he is sick. AIC made a mistake on him in my opinion. Cantrell can't really sing either so it's a double whammy. I love AIC but they really should've put more thought and time into finding a better singer.

@jdre1979 I'm not too sure you have paid much attention to the sound of old AIC with the way you're down playing Cantrell's voice. It's very obvious he's no Layne, but those two harmonizing together laid a whole new foundation with rock music. Listen to the unplugged album again.

@Christiantodd1 I agree the harmonies make the old AIC great, but I also believe almost anyone can harmonize with Layne Staley cause his voice is just that good. That being said Cantrells voice was decent at a point in time, and it may just be that its getting worse with age....It happens and I can deal with his voice. And Im not trying to bash the band cause I love them, but I just cant get into Duval. He's just not a good singer.

I don't hate Duvall, but he's just not the voice and emotion the band needs. I think if they searched a bit they could find someone who was a better fit. Hell, I've never understood why they didn't just continue with Jerry doing lead vocals.

I'm not hating on Duvall but Staley's pain in his voice made me connect with Alice in Chains so much more. R.I.P Staley!! You are definitely missed probably by half the crowd... but Duvall is okay I just think it's Rock N Roll to him which it is but with Staley that Rock was realer for me!

I have no problem with this band or with Duvall singing with them, or even with him singing AIC songs. But I do think they should not have used the AIC name when they put this band together. AIC died with Layne Staley and it should have been buried with him. They can call themselves whatever they want and play whatever songs they want, but they're not Alice in Chains. Led Zeppelin didn't keep playing with another drummer, and Joy Division came back as New Order and they had great success.
