One of my favourite songs , and a great version of it. I used to watch it over and over on Mtv! However, it's not really about Communism, is it, even though The Pet Shop Boys employ that iconography to such good effect? That's missing the point. It's about the struggle for the freedom to be who and what you want to be, and fulfilling your own personal dreams. These powerful images convey that very forcefully and, to me, emotionally, and complement The Village People's original message perfectly.

I see this song differently. First of all it's a cover version from Village People. With them it's a song about the American Dream of conquering the west. PSB transform it to a song about the fall of the Soviet block. That is my take on it anyway.

@Mihanzia - Not sure what you're trying to say. If you're saying the song makes USA sound better than the rest. Well, yeah - but that's the point. Its called 'satire'. Its a play on "Go West, Young Man!" (during US western expansion in the 19th century) and on the feeling that the US 'won' the Cold War.
It's all about the context. Trust me PSB has tongue firmly in cheek during this song... ;)

I see this song differently. First of all it's a cover version from Village People. With them it's a song about the American Dream of conquering the west. PSB transform it to a song about the fall of the Soviet block. That is my take on it anyway.
