Nick Jonas didn't do a bad job as Marius, and this song is actually pretty good. But, after listening to Michael Ball there's just no way anyone can do this song justice.
this song is so good with him siging it ..but he needs more emotion on his face he has 1 expression the hole time but i still love the sound of his broadway voice ..!!!!
This song really broke my heart. Just the perfect pitch, the perfect amount of emotion, and power. We didn't need the entire thing to be a power ballad. We needed raw emotions. Nick Jonas delivered.
I actually have some respect for Nick Jonas now. Singing on Broadway is ten times more difficult than the bubble gum pop him and his brothers do. I hope he chooses to continue down this path. Bravo Nick!
@ejlove475 I´m afraid opinions do defer especially in the case of music!
@Taurantia Your thought about stage fright is interesting. Might be, it was a very special night after all! Though I still think that he is not ready for this role yet. He closes his throat in the high parts(which could refer to being afraid of ones own voice, as my teacher keeps telling me, cause I do the same and actually have stage fright) and definitly needs some work on his bottom register.
It's funny sitting down for this concert DVD and knowing Nick was in it I was expecting some crappy showboating, the way a lot of pop singers tend to be prone to, but sadly he really didn't stand out at all. His voice was far too soft, he didn't really act, and his vocal range not only didn't fit the role, but he couldn't seem to hold his notes. I'm not a fan of him or his brothers, but I feel like from what I've seen from them he could have done better. Honestly, it seemed like stage fright.
No, I must say this guy is not fit for this role. just for once leaving aside that Michael Ball is the best Marius ever, but Nick Jonas has ruined the whole 25th Anniversary concert for me. My brother gave the dvd to me for x-mas.I was really excited and Jonas ruined it! He has not the voice for this role. The only thing he does is whining! His voice hasn´t got the depth it neads for empty chairs, there is a definite lack of volume! He might have some talent to work on, but he´s no Marius!!!

Honestly, I the only problem I had with Nick Jonas being Marius is that tickets would get sold out not so they could see the music, but to see Nick Jonas "BECAUSE HES SO HAWT LOL". I hate that some girls only care for this musical because Nick Jonas was in it. He's a good singer, but it makes me upset that some people only watched or saw it because they think Nick Jonas is hot but "Broadway music sucks" ugh.
wow, i was shocked to hear him be this good. his voice compared to others isn't as good for musicals but this was still amazing. i cry whenever this part comes on. <3
uhhhhhhhh........................... WTF?!?!?!?! where was THAT when he sang his diabetic song?! he shuld do more musicals instead of being in that band!!
This is a sign that Nick needs to leave the Jonas Brothers and go on to bigger and better things like broadway. Besides the Jonas Brothers are coming to a end anyway.
@frdgordon He was on broadway a number of times as a child, actually. This is what he started out doing, and although he needs more training, he is rather gifted as well/
I respect the Jonas Brothers tons... but I am a Les Mis fan first. And I don't think this was anything special. I'm not even going to compare him to Michael Ball because that wouldn't be fair. Nick's tone is beautiful but his range is not impressive to me. He really tanked on those low notes (1:03 - 1:12)
@xXblythe Indeed you can't compare they don't have the same age, the same formation, the same level but hey this is Nick Jonas who knew he could sing like that?
I'm not a fan of the Jonas Brothers. Yes, I am aware that no one makes a better Marius than Michael Ball. Yes, I do like the 10th anniversary better than this one. However, you have to admit this guy can sing. Plus, you also have to admit that they made a smart choice casting someone as famous as Nick Jonas to promote such an amazing show. Because of this performance, a completely new audience will be exposed to Les Mis, which is I think is awesome.
@KrazyKurlyKarly well said. I once read that ndrewc Llyoyd Webber casts the leads for his shows for what the actor can bring to every aspect of the role, rather than concentrating entirely on their singing ability. I am not a Jonas Bros fan (at 45 I think I'm a bit past that) but reading so many negative comments about this boy's performance made me watch several of the other actors who have played the part, and I have to say, although not the strongest singer he is by far the best
He has excellent range and CAN sing. He is clearly not as talented as the other members of this concert. I've seen and performed this song many times and his rendition is vocally excellent to say the least. The acting, which is forgivable being that it's a concert, is of lesser quality. I do think he is talented and could perform up to par on Broadway later on. Emotion and characterization while singing are very difficult. He does well and isn't completely shadowed by everyone else.

@TheKittykatty9 Until few minutes ago, I didn't know he was a Jonas brother, I just didn't like him. I don't like the sound of his voice and he has many technical flaws, too. It's evident that he's there just because he's famous.
@SydBarker Well I AM easy to please, so don't mind me. Anyway, i think he's good, but run along and tell everybody your opinion if you wish to. that was a rhetorical comment, by the way
I heard non-professional singers sang this song a lot better than him. How did he got this part? Is he one of the Jonas Brothers (really, I don't know)?
I personally don't like the way he anticipates the music and how he ends every sentence when he sings. it's like he has problems with the vibrato (sorry my English is awful)
i was there watchin this my bro was in it i think he is amazing cos my mum said he was just w whiny pop dude but i said he was amazing and , honestly , I WAS RIGHT!
this guy NEEDS to learn the difference between 'pop' and real theatre music. his cut offs are WAY to short and sharp. this is a very solomn song, not a cute pop rendition
@xxxVampyressxxx he did good in my opinion for not being trained and coming from the pop side of the music industry. He would need years of training to pull it off like the other men in the cast but im sure that they all had years of training. he's still young so he has time if he did want to be in the musical/broadway style industry.
Not gonna lie, Nick is now my favourite Marius and Samantha is now my favourite Eponine, and I've heard about four other casts do this musical as well.
Wow, not bad. But not great. If you compare his version to, say, Michael Ball's version, you'll see how the song is supposed to be sung. I think he needed to stick to musical theater. Pop ruined his voice, you can hear the high, whiny sound every once and a while, and he is drowned out by the classically trained voices which accompany him. However, he does seem to have a good voice and didn't do terribly...
Oh my heck he has so much tension in his body on those higher notes... "I can hear them now the very WORD that they had sung beCAME their last communion"... he pushes them out so violently and abruptly... so unpleasant to see and hear... horrid technique happening here... >.< I would also like to see him not look up the whole time... makes him look malicious or just weird...
I don´t understand why this BIG role is sung by Pop Idols (Gareth Gates) and young guys from boybands for teenage girls (Nick Jonas)... They don´t have the voice fot it. It´s like... Donald Duck trying to sing opera! No, it´s much worse. I´m not attacking those guys, I admit that they are good in their own songs, but... Do you hear it? Obviously Nick does not have wide vocal range - he´s choking in the graves and he can´t open the heights... Sorry, but that´s the truth.
WAIT! The little boy died too! I have watched this on DVD like 15 times and countless online and I never noticed the little boy! I'm sad now! I liked him! :(
@Jonaslove1991 i liked gavroche... but at least he died doing something noble. (He was trying to get bullets for the revolutionaries) In the actual production, as he dies he's singing "little people"... it's really sad...
I love Les Miserables so much! And I went through a Jonas phaze. But I do beleive Nixk did a very good job at proving he could step up and escape the teen pop music. Job well done!
@przemek1204 Well I love Les Mis just as much if not more w/o Jonas. And I'm 13 and I know plenty of people that agree with me. Maybe it could just be because he's really good, with some practice and professional training he could be just as amazing as every one else on that stage : )
@ninilein1505 he did an awesome job, considering that his voice isnt that deep. You dont know what ur talking about because he sincerely gained many peoples respect :)
The fact of the matter is that if he was not already famous for being Nick Jonas than he would not have been offered this role. I know he played Gavroche when he was younger but he would not have been invited back on that basis alone. If he had come back and auditioned like this without already being famous than he would he not have been cast here.
speechless i just fell more in love with him than i was before <3 i am crying hes awesome so proud of him i cant describe how proud i am to be his fan :') my heart was beating so fast i am speechless i am breathless ! i love you nick j ! you know how to make me fall in love with you all over again ! you are great you are the best singer on earth <3333333
i have to say, i have found a new respect for nick jonas, and quite honestly, think that he should make the switch from his juvinile boy band of brothers to this, more serious and more professional form of musical theater, because you have to admit he thrives in such an enviroment.
i wasn't expecting much from nick he wasn't trained like the others but i think he did fantastic, it was more boyish like a teen was singing it. he has a beautiful voice now i just hope he can train to get at the level as the others and do more musicals not pop!
@cantwait4summer29 i said the same exact thing when i watched this on tv. i was pretty much in tears the whole time he sang this. he brought a new raw emotion to this and i think he should sing like this all the time. it's an improvement from singing with his brothers. he's not singing through his nose! beautiful, plain and simple.
if you want to see the best version of this song on youtube search for "empty chairs at empty tables lampeter - strasburg. you won't regret it, it's even better than the tenth anniversary edition
he did a good job! i didnt think he was gonna b bad n the first place but i knew it was gonna b much diffrnt than the jobros and i was pleased with his performances and his low pitch
@mark3481948 HAHAHA>>>I know that was soooo bad!!! I laugh so hard every time I here that crap...man...His face was odd and his physical representation was horrific. What was up with his hand, his pose when he sang "What your sacrifice was for"...damn...I watch this video just to laugh...
I don't believe him. Nothing about his face says to me 'All my friends are dead.'
It says 'Mine is not a Broadway voice. The pain on my face isn't emotion, it's the strain of trying to get past my extremely limited pop vocal range.'
I really think they could have done much better by Marius for this. Putting someone like this in a cast with people like Lea S. who can not only sing better, but who can also act, is setting him up to stick out. His inability to perform was extremely noticeable.
yall, quit being hard on poor nicholas. He was on broadway when he was ten, in this exact musical. He's doing an amazing job. Whether you like him or not, he's a great singer.
LITERALLY takes ones breath away. It is not just the vocal but the words and how he performs it. Again, one more song from THE greatest musical of our time! wow!
After watching this I wish that Marius was killed instead of Enjolras so I wouldn't have heard this mangled vocal...this is a damn shame. I hate how some casting people think that to attract patrons to musicals and theatre they have to cast some spoiled pop star, and half of them could barely sing. It is an absolute slap in the face to those who work their asses off training , then is turned down or set aside in the ensemble for someone like Nick Fucking Jonas...I am PISSED!!!
@LuvlyUnknown wow..so ummm questions ! spoiled pop star?! so if you had as much money as he does and were in the lime light as much as he is would that make you spoiled too or are you just pissed because you probably dont get the materialistic things that you want and he most likely can ?!
@LuvlyUnknown Yeah when I did Les Miserables in a local production back in 2 years ago, my director told us that this is a song that is very easy to get boring if the performer is not good. He even said he watched some Marius on national tour that he thought "Why didn't Marius just die in the barricade?" This is exactly the same situation. And what you said actually can make the story probably better because I was playing Enjolras, so of coz I would agree with what you said lol.
for being his first broadway musical role and singing these types of songs, i think he did a great job. i was really impressed with him. you can't compare him to someone like michael ball or colm wilkinson who've had years of experience and that was their first career, they weren't pop stars like he is.
@prettyyoungthing816 this is not nick's first broadway musical he has been in les mis as gavroche sound of music as kurt and annie get your gun as little jake
@ilovejoejonas8989 i understand he was in musicals, but as a child! that's a lot different than being on broadway as an adult when you've totally come into your voice. He hadn't hit puberty with all those roles. so again, i'll stand by what i said, you can't compare him to michael ball or anyone of that nature because obviously he wont be the same as them.
He can sing better than most, but he needs to learn how to act to play this role right, to give more meaning to what he is singing. His voice is not bad, his acting was. The drama was more in his facial expression than the way he sang it. You see the pain in his expressions but it did not really translate to the way he sang. It did not seem like he was telling you a story he experienced but just singing a song.
@MonsoonWinds6 for being his first broadway musical role and singing these types of songs, i think he did a great job. i was really impressed with him. you can't compare him to someone like michael ball or colm wilkinson who've had years of experience and that was their first career, they weren't pop stars like he is.
@MonsoonWinds6 (: i mean i'm not the biggest jonas fan, but i do give credit when credit is due. for his first broadway setting besides being Gavorche years ago [which doesnt exactly count since he was a child] i was beyond impressed.
it's tough to go from "lovebug" to "empty chairs at empty tables".
@MonsoonWinds6 the only thing that bothers me about him throughout the entire show is that he seems to have the oddest lisp that i never noticed i guess? or his teeth make him sound funny haha idk. but again, i was impressed.
There is a very big difference between musical theater singing, and singing music for the public. Nick Jonas is talented, it's just that he is young, and everyone he is in Les Mis with are trained in theatrical singing. His inexperience stands out because he is competing with people that have a lot more experience. I have a lot of respect for him because he's pursuing something that he loves, no matter what people are saying about him.
I feel that the arguement that he was on Broadway as Gavroche really should be retired. Kids pretty much all sound the same when they sing, unless if they're somebody like Jackie Evancho. Singing before starting puberty doesn't qualify anybody as Marius, because your voice changes. A child prodigy could become crap if their voice didn't train right when they went through puberty. By switching to pop, Nick Jonas ruined a what could have been a decent theatrical voice.
SHOT THE FUCK UP ABOUT IF HE BAD OR NOT ! ENJOY THE MUSIC INSTED ! !

Not gonna lie, Nick is now my favourite Marius and Samantha is now my favourite Eponine, and I've heard about four other casts do this musical as well.
TalulahCarmichael 10 months ago
Wow, not bad. But not great. If you compare his version to, say, Michael Ball's version, you'll see how the song is supposed to be sung. I think he needed to stick to musical theater. Pop ruined his voice, you can hear the high, whiny sound every once and a while, and he is drowned out by the classically trained voices which accompany him. However, he does seem to have a good voice and didn't do terribly...
daffodil977 10 months ago
Oh my heck he has so much tension in his body on those higher notes... "I can hear them now the very WORD that they had sung beCAME their last communion"... he pushes them out so violently and abruptly... so unpleasant to see and hear... horrid technique happening here... >.< I would also like to see him not look up the whole time... makes him look malicious or just weird...

I didn't know that Nick could sing like that... MY GOD! That was pretty nice!

Sorry, but that´s the truth.

i doubt anyone of you can identify it, but if you can, what is the song that is just ending as nick enters?

Jonaslove1991 10 months ago

The fact of the matter is that if he was not already famous for being Nick Jonas than he would not have been offered this role. I know he played Gavroche when he was younger but he would not have been invited back on that basis alone. If he had come back and auditioned like this without already being famous than he would he not have been cast here.

i have to say, i have found a new respect for nick jonas, and quite honestly, think that he should make the switch from his juvinile boy band of brothers to this, more serious and more professional form of musical theater, because you have to admit he thrives in such an enviroment.

LuvlyUnknown 11 months ago 3
I don't believe him. Nothing about his face says to me 'All my friends are dead.'
It says 'Mine is not a Broadway voice. The pain on my face isn't emotion, it's the strain of trying to get past my extremely limited pop vocal range.'
I really think they could have done much better by Marius for this. Putting someone like this in a cast with people like Lea S. who can not only sing better, but who can also act, is setting him up to stick out. His inability to perform was extremely noticeable.
RefletPalissant 11 months ago
@RefletPalissant you said it perfectly. He sings okay, but he is no where close to anyone on stage with him.

yall, quit being hard on poor nicholas. He was on broadway when he was ten, in this exact musical. He's doing an amazing job. Whether you like him or not, he's a great singer.
belleofthesouth3 11 months ago
pretty good for a kid with a very limited vocal range.
ScienceReasonBelief 11 months ago
LITERALLY takes ones breath away. It is not just the vocal but the words and how he performs it. Again, one more song from THE greatest musical of our time! wow!
allgloryforu 11 months ago
After watching this I wish that Marius was killed instead of Enjolras so I wouldn't have heard this mangled vocal...this is a damn shame. I hate how some casting people think that to attract patrons to musicals and theatre they have to cast some spoiled pop star, and half of them could barely sing. It is an absolute slap in the face to those who work their asses off training , then is turned down or set aside in the ensemble for someone like Nick Fucking Jonas...I am PISSED!!!
LuvlyUnknown 11 months ago
@LuvlyUnknown wow..so ummm questions ! spoiled pop star?! so if you had as much money as he does and were in the lime light as much as he is would that make you spoiled too or are you just pissed because you probably dont get the materialistic things that you want and he most likely can ?!
prettyapple25 11 months ago
@LuvlyUnknown Yeah when I did Les Miserables in a local production back in 2 years ago, my director told us that this is a song that is very easy to get boring if the performer is not good. He even said he watched some Marius on national tour that he thought "Why didn't Marius just die in the barricade?" This is exactly the same situation. And what you said actually can make the story probably better because I was playing Enjolras, so of coz I would agree with what you said lol.

I really admire Nick for doing this, and the fact that he didn't kill one of my favourite Broadway songs is all I can ask for.
OreoHELLYEAH 11 months ago 3
for being his first broadway musical role and singing these types of songs, i think he did a great job. i was really impressed with him. you can't compare him to someone like michael ball or colm wilkinson who've had years of experience and that was their first career, they weren't pop stars like he is.
all things considered, he did great.
prettyyoungthing816 11 months ago
@prettyyoungthing816 this is not nick's first broadway musical he has been in les mis as gavroche sound of music as kurt and annie get your gun as little jake
ilovejoejonas8989 11 months ago
@ilovejoejonas8989 i understand he was in musicals, but as a child! that's a lot different than being on broadway as an adult when you've totally come into your voice. He hadn't hit puberty with all those roles. so again, i'll stand by what i said, you can't compare him to michael ball or anyone of that nature because obviously he wont be the same as them.
prettyyoungthing816 11 months ago
@prettyyoungthing816 No, hes no Michael Ball, but he did good. So Kudos to Nick
superstar19ize 11 months ago
@superstar19ize true true true. (:
prettyyoungthing816 11 months ago
He can sing better than most, but he needs to learn how to act to play this role right, to give more meaning to what he is singing. His voice is not bad, his acting was. The drama was more in his facial expression than the way he sang it. You see the pain in his expressions but it did not really translate to the way he sang. It did not seem like he was telling you a story he experienced but just singing a song.
StarXPO 11 months ago
This song is one of my favorites and Nick Jonas kills it! Tells you that he's not made of Disney. (Nothing against Disney)

Themoviemaster51 11 months ago
@prettyyoungthing816 You are so right! It's pretty hard to switch from pop music to a broadway 100% musical like Les Miz. He's pretty amazing.
MonsoonWinds6 11 months ago
@MonsoonWinds6 (: i mean i'm not the biggest jonas fan, but i do give credit when credit is due. for his first broadway setting besides being Gavorche years ago [which doesnt exactly count since he was a child] i was beyond impressed.
it's tough to go from "lovebug" to "empty chairs at empty tables".
prettyyoungthing816 11 months ago
@MonsoonWinds6 the only thing that bothers me about him throughout the entire show is that he seems to have the oddest lisp that i never noticed i guess? or his teeth make him sound funny haha idk. but again, i was impressed.

I don't know about you guys but when Nick Jonas sings this sonng and I keep repeating this song, you just gets sexier each time I play it. :)

There is a very big difference between musical theater singing, and singing music for the public. Nick Jonas is talented, it's just that he is young, and everyone he is in Les Mis with are trained in theatrical singing. His inexperience stands out because he is competing with people that have a lot more experience. I have a lot of respect for him because he's pursuing something that he loves, no matter what people are saying about him.
balison3 11 months ago
I feel that the arguement that he was on Broadway as Gavroche really should be retired. Kids pretty much all sound the same when they sing, unless if they're somebody like Jackie Evancho. Singing before starting puberty doesn't qualify anybody as Marius, because your voice changes. A child prodigy could become crap if their voice didn't train right when they went through puberty. By switching to pop, Nick Jonas ruined a what could have been a decent theatrical voice.
