@trancebites@djvartan The laptop was only used to run a RTAS compressor (The PSP Vintage Warmer if I remember correctly) over the entire mix to keep the audio from clipping (a combination of a FMR Audio Really Nice Compressor 1773 and FMR Audio RNLA7239 Levelling Amp are now used). There are no audio files playing from the computer. The live kit consisted of a mackie mixer (I can't remember which model), EMU Ultra e6400 sampler, Akai MPC2000, Korg Prophecy, Korg MS2000, and various effects.
True not on the cd, only on the DVD, which is quite nice to see too these guys rock it out though! for sure they are having fun and directly hearable.
its not about the mixing/beat matching technical skills (although they still count) the real creativity comes from the journey the dj takes you on...with their unheard music...exposing you to something you havent heard before and reacting to it...and the dj puts in a nice order for you to sound nice.
It's not about the tools it's about the sound. Vinyl is beautiful, but doesn't make it easy to lift just a measure or two, and forget about creating a loop. Beatmatching is not an art, and some would rather let the computer take care of it so they can focus on other things.
i will agree with you on beatmatching not being an art.
I heard a serato dj once say it is just as hard if not harder to DJ on Serato than vinyl. That to me is bullcrap. Serato helps you beatmatch. Not to mention, you dont have to deal with imperfections in records.
But the thing i think kills the scene, is a DJ thinks just cause they can beatmatch, that they are an artist. They get so wrapped up in beatmatching and stupid stuff like scratching, the art is neglected. They dont get deep
very true, beatmatching is easy if you've got a good ear and rythem, Its all about being creative and making your mix go somewhere. Serato and looking at a screen can be distracting though, I find old school D.J.ing more hands on. But I would buy traktor if I had the money and some allen and Heath controllers simply cause I like getting my tunes off beatport for cheap and to be creative with effects.
mpc 2000, mac, triton i think, mix desk, may be underneath the mpc I think it's an emu sampler. Underneath the triton may be a prophet. We didn't see so good:)
it's not the difficulty of the mix that matters, it's how it sounds... and the fact is Jeff is one of the best... however, would you like something more if their rigs were filled with cement? What if they try it underwater? Don't slander electronic DJing because it seems easier to you... It's electronic music after all, it was only a matter of time until DJing became digital.
True, PC mixing and vinyle are very far apart. But it just seems to me that a PC can keep a beat for you. In truth, I see the DJ as a computer programmer, just programing the tunes in and leting it take it's course. I have a vinyl DJ for years, and till this day, it's gets a little tricky.
Yes, digital mixing CAN keep your tracks in tempo, but that's not to say that EVERYONE that uses Traktor or Ableton or VDJ is using some cheap tactic to make their mixes sound good. Not ragging on you personally, I'm just tired of people thinking that because digital DJing CAN be easier, than it automatically IS easier across the board.
Way Better than Young Jeezy, Lil Wayne, other Stupid ass Down South Rappers, I love Detroit/ East Coast baby, I'll compare this to real rappers like Run DMC, N.W.A, Tupac.

The one single thing that's easier with digital djing is travelling - no heavy record bags, and still, access to your whole collection. That's it.
Matching beats with vinyl is easy enough (DJ 101, first week!), if you can't do that you better stay away from music altogether.
What I found weird about digital DJing though is sometimes DJs hide behind their laptop and lose the crowd.

my opinion is: making a live set means playing music, obviously, in thousands of different ways.
a dj set means playing someone else's music.
if you have the skills to play 3 vinyls simultaneously, then RESPECT, but whatever you do it's not your own sound.

mixing with turntables is live!
with samplers ur creating the music on the go... ur not really beatmatching anything... ur recreating your track as your going...
You're right though, you can't compare these things..
and they both require skills and proper understanding of a list of things...
