It's not about doing an "American" accent, it's about using your natural voice, so that the auditors see that you can handle heightened language without sounding affected.
I don't know if you've already used this for your audition or not, as you posted it last January, but a few notes for you:
First, avoid the accent. Shakespeare, when performed in America, is performed with an American accent. The Brit accent tends to be distracting to an American audience.
Second, move! Use the space you have when auditioning. Of course, you want to move with purpose, but there are so many places in this speech where moving would help accentuate what you're saying.
I dissagre about your second piece of advice. Henry was a very proud, brave, and strong man. When giving a speech he would stand with purpose and movement isn't necissary. At most, I would take maybe one or two steps but know why you took those steps. That being said, I didn't watch this whole video because I was dissatisfied with the first 45 seconds or so.
It doesn't seem like he knows where he is, who he's talking to, or what is going on at all.
If he's using this as an audition piece, there should be at least one purposeful movement; this allows the director or auditor to see the character within the movement, in addition to vocal quality and facial expression. As a performance piece rather than an audition piece, I would definitely agree with you, but as he intended this as an audition, movement is an essential part of the audition.
this is really fun to watch without the sound on! haha I didn't want to wake anybody up, but wanted to watch it. I'm going to have to listen to it when its not past midnight sometime.
pretty good, and shakespeare is hard to memorize. couple of things though: study iambic pentameter a little more. also, work on building up at times; vary your volume, and come to a huge climax at the end. use your hands and move a bit more.
however, you has awesome diction, and no flaws in the actual menorization. good stuff
Good effort, but sometimes you place emphasis on the wrong words. For instance, you said: 'This story shall the GOOD man teach his son', while I would suggest saying 'THIS story shall the good man teach his son', since th story of the battle is more important then who tells it to his son. Furthermore you sound like you're trying to convince your soldiers, while perhaps it would be beter to sound like you really believe in them and yourself. Having said that, good effort. Good Luck!
I did this for high school. You should sound like a king and lets the energy build up in you.Say, "We few, we happy few, we band of brothers, say that slowly and that last line, shout it because remember you hare talking to lots of soldiers who are hungry and sick and that this may be you last time as a king.
this is some good stuff to learn from thanks guys

Why use an accent when you're not British?
ianwhitt91 2 years ago
@ianwhitt91 because it's called... acting?
Mind blowing, right?

@elsephen
Most colleges wouldn't want you to do an accent. You should do pieces that are close to your type.
ianwhitt91 10 months ago
@ianwhitt91 Because most colleges don't think their "talent" can do it correctly... so you end up with 20 kids butchering it.
Playing King Henry with an American accent would be about the dumbest possible idea.

@ianwhitt91 Problem is... when you're acting... you're supposed to...
