@checkabreak Peter Rivera is a stage name. Peter real surname is Hoorelbeke, which is of Belgian origin. He took the surname Rivera from a relative, cause it was a much easier one.
By the way, surname Rivera is of Spanish and Northern Italian origin, meaning "riverbank".
I remember when I first heard this group at 14 I thought the group was, or at least the lead singer, was black. Really rich voice for a "bunch of ugly white guys".
Boy, do I wish I could have seen this group live .... I'm just an old hippie at heart.
BRILLIANT!!!! Rare Earth was a smokin hot band. Great song! This video captures a truthful, soulful performance. Peter Rivera had a voice that would have had him singing lead for the Temptations, 4 Tops, Undisputed Truth or any of those classic late 60's - early 70's soul/R & B bands. GREAT POST!!!!!
"I just want to celebrate" was the first rock music that I heard. I was 8 years old! "Foi a porta de entrada para eu entrar de cabeça no rock n roll e não ter saído mais, rs"
Hadn't heard this in years. Suddenly I'm 16 again going through two a day football workouts, running 100 yard sprints in full gear, in 100 degree heat. This always seemed to be playing in the locker room after practice. yeah, I just want to celebrate another day of living.
Last Fri. 6-5-09 I sat next to Ray Monette on a flight from Detroit to Vegas. He had some very interesting stories about being a studio guitarist back in the '60's. I talked to him for 3 hours and didn't even ask for his autograph- I'm a dumbas!!
I got the chance to meet Pete back in 2000 he with a few other Oldies rockers came to town I had him sign my original Rare Earth albums. He uses the snare drum & sticks in his autograph. I was also lucky to interview him on my radio show prior to coming to town via the telephone. If I can find the tapes I will post them. Great guy to talk with! He explains the whole deal with Motown's experiment with Rock and the Rare Earth Label. I was blown away at how he still sounds like the records!
Rare Earth was a subsidiary of the Motown Record Corporation, therefore they did indeed sign with Motown. The Rare Earth division was set up afterward.
No, Motown created a new label for them, asked RE what they wanted it to be called, and they (jokingly) replied "Rare Earth"... Yes, Rare Earth Records is owned by Motown, but Rare Earth was never on the "Motown" label.
I wasn't disagreeing with anyone here. The information I was sharing was based on my interviews & discussions with folks who worked for Motown during the Rare Earth period. Not trying to nit-pick.
What an incredible video! Pete actually went out in the crowd and handed the mic to the audience! RE band had wonderful rhythm and timing. The 70's were my teenage years and RE is a big part of the music I enjoyed.
You're right. At the time, Motown was looking to branch out by signing white bands. The Rare Earth label was created specifically for the purpose. Other artists recorded under the label, but none were successful. The only exception was a pop single called "Indiana Wants Me" by R Dean Taylor.
When I first herd music from Detroit's Rare Earth, I thought they were a 5-member black group. My lord was I wrong! They are all white and sound very close like Detroit's Grand Funk Railroad. Rare Earth, from 1970 to 1978, had numerous hits including: Get Ready, (I Know) I'm Losin You, Born To Wonder, and my favourite, I Just Want To Celebrate #7 in 1971.
is it just me or are these the tallest, skinniest white musicians ever love the song and band saw them at hippie fest a few years ago(whoever was in that version of the band)
I never noticed that before, but most from the 60's and 70's are thinner - I think it's just more noticeable now cause most americans are heavier now than ever before.
People back in the day were more athletic and willing to work harder than now. People played their own instruments and had to do alot of concerts which means more energy burnt. Remember, this was pre music videos. Artist were noted by their concerts so they did alot of venues. Computerized music is also a factor in the current state of chunkiness in general. Computers have helped to fatten people because they basically do things now that we did back in the day
This is one of **the** greatest rock bands of ALL time!
Peter Rivera one of the most talented drummers/singers this world has ever known! I hope that someone will soon post their appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show", and other appearances on TV. These guys brought so much joy into peoples'lives!!
I have very early memories of hearing this band in the back of our uncles van...first rock band I ever really loved, they're great!! thanks for posting it!
Hey, bozonono13, you wouldn't have anymore footage on these guys, would you? I'm looking for a 9 minute or so version of What'd I Say that Rare Earth did in the early 70's and it was in concert and came in an album cover that looked just like a backpack, and the whole album was in concert, and phenomenol! But I'll take whatever you got!8D
You're my age and you understand. What happened to the good music? It was our generation in time. It will never be repeated. Thank God we were there to experience it. Our generation is when Rock and Roll peaked.
My theory is that disco caused the dismantling of talented groups like Rare Earth. They were too advanced for record executives and the less hip listeners.
Rare Earth was blurring the genre lines in some very innovative and unique ways.
People brag about the soulfulness of Justin Timberlake, Eminem, Michael McDonald and even Sting. But Pete Rivera was a bona fide soul brother with street cred in every neighborhood; and with every race. Long Live Rare Earth!
Agreed - Rare Earth is a great band with real talent and chops. IMHO very few, if any, modern so-called "R&B", "Hip Hop" or "Soul" artists even come close to the soul and groove these guys lay down... nothing on the charts, anyway. For one thing, Rare Earth are actually playing their own instruments - the music's not laid down by computers, turntables and samplers, and that seems to be an increasingly rare thing these days ;)
Cheer up! The same decrease of quality is happening to IT these days. When it finally becomes too boring to play with, people may pick up the occasional guitar, again...
Or more frequent power-cuts will bring relief.
Thanks for all those uploads. I feared I lived on an empty island but how shall I hate YouTube, now...

We do, however have some new R&B artists who are completely talented and using it. John Legend comes to mind. As does Jill Scott. There are others, but too many to mention here.
