Have you read that manga? It's a parody with Ranka as magical girl. Similar to the parody Fate/Stay night got with Illya as magical girl. While the Sheryl manga IS a serious story which is still outgoing and got Kawamori excited and interviewed over the release (for three pages long).

Ranka manga is mostly loli gag comic played for lulz.

Both. Space Opera. Basically, it means that romance and music'll be pretty close to the story. LIke an opea. It'll also tend to have the science aspect of the story lighter. Basically, if they need giant walking/flying transforming jets, it's alright.

Dramatic, and cinematic, without worrying too much about suspension of disbelief.

If you are easily put into a trance by extremely cute chicks, well done J-Pop, and a male protagonist that fits every fan-girls' dream of the stereotypical "hot guy", you'll certainly forget how the plot crawls along like a slug. Even the slowest parts of Witch Hunter Robin don't have anything on this slow.

Mobile suit is a Gundam term, so you will not find mobile suits in Macross. There are some impressive mecha fights but all depends on your taste as there are more like dog fights since they are mostly fighters.

The music in this show is second to none. The action in this show is second to none. The character's in this show are second to none. This show is second to none. Sorry Gundam 00, I love you, but compared to THIS....

you guys have to really watch some of the Macross older material, specially SDF Macross could be difficult do to the older style of animation, I recommend watching Macross Do you remember love? Zero and Plus. Macross 7 has mix feelings among the Macross fans.
